Roster Signings that lead to Howard

Post#1 » by N Ireland Nets » Thu Dec 15, 2011 6:41 pm

What I mean by he title of the thread is purely what players can we bring in to maintain our cap for 2012 to be able to at least participate in the Dwight Howard trade saga seeing as we are all in. I came up with a name I havent heard a lot about this pre season but here we go.

The obvious one is Hump back on a big $8/9 million 1 year deal. I don't think he is a good player, i think he basically hustled hard and ripped boards off every nets player on the court last year and is basically a quality back up but hey I wouldn't complain over a 1 year deal. He would however directly effect Lopez's rebound numbers which would also have a baring on Lopez's trade value.

Verdict for Billy: Get er did (but only if its a 1 year deal)

Next up is AK47, who I actually saw quite a bit of during Eurobaster and I have to be honest, he looked really impressive so maybe a switch to the Nets gives him some motivation with a change of scenery. Even though I would hate hate hate to sign him to a multi year deal I would take him in a heartbeat again as a 1 year option.

Verdict for Billy: Get er did (again only 1 year option)

Next is someone close to Howard who wants to play where Howard signs. So Gilbert Arenas, should we bring him on board?? I'm of the opinion Arenas is a great pick up on vet min and someone who basically is no risk what so ever. Deron Williams has expressed he thinks Arenas is a good pick up and I could see him becoming a serviceable player again without having the bagage of his whopping contract over his head. No pressure to perform and just go out there and do your thing. For vet min he would be a great pick up with no risk and high reward.

Verdict for Billy: Get er did (id offer a 1year deal with team option to cover ourselves in case he blows up)

Another name I thought off who is available and I haven't seen read or heard about at all is Michael Redd. If he a free agent because if he is I think he could be another low risk high reward signing that could help out the younger guys and we wouldn't have to lean on high for high mins so could be a really good back up.

Verdict for Billy: Ger er did (same as Arenas, 1 year deal with team option 2nd year)

I'd look to trade Farmar for either a late 1st round pick or an expiring contract. A possible PF for us could be someone like Jamison.

Possible line up:

Williams / Arenas / Farmar / Gaines
Morrow / Redd / Brooks
AK / S Williams / James
Hump / S Williams / J Williams
Lopez / Petro

Again all this is geared towards keeping our cap flexability in regards Dwight Howard so that oncce March 1st comes around we will be able to move any free agent signings in a package for Howard. Any signings people think could do a job for us while we tick over until March 1st to start the Dwightmare again?

Just trying to start some healthy discussions

Howard was around Arenas for about 4 months. How close do you really think they are?

Close enough that he didn't want Arenas amnestied at the Magic, close enough to spend a lot of time together throughout the lockout, close enough to be quoted as saying Arenas wants to sign where ever Howard ends up. That close enough?

You know a better idea then Hump is if we can trade for a guy like Camby for nothing but pure cap, at least that way I believe he's immediately tradeable as long as you're not combining salary in the deal.

So you would break it down into Camby for Turk, then the rest of the stuff for Dwight and if needed Duhon.

Camby isn't getting traded, brother. He's the only center they have, other than old man River...er, I mean Thomas.

Arenas got paid $60mil to walk away. Of course he wouldnt mind going wherever Dwight goes. I'm sure you could find quite a few players that would say the same thing. And Dwight travelled thru the lockout, remember Russia? he wasnt with Arenas as much as you make it out to be.

Of course we remember Russia. That's where the Nets [s]abducted Dwight and planted the thoughts of being a Net in his sub-consciousness[/s] dancers met Dwight Howard.

EDIT: Booooo no strikethrough

I think you guys need to stay on track of only adding young lowcost players. Hopefully find a diamond in the rough. Brook Lopez and Marshon Brooks are two good young players that will be huge trading chips if you guys sign Dwight Howard. As well they might be players you can keep to build around Howard and Williams. The Nets already learned from one mistake in giving Outlaw that big contract luckly they were able to erase that mistake. Learn from that because, that oppurtunity will not come again. I would survey around team benches where a player will potential could be had who is not being utilized, and could thrive in the Nets situation.
