Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal (Dec 17)

Post#1 » by CPT » Sat Dec 17, 2011 2:14 am

Couldn't find a thread for this, and it's tomorrow.

Location: San Diego, California
Venue: Valley View Casino Center
Broadcast: Showtime

MAIN CARD (Showtime)

Champ Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal (for lightweight title)
Champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Hiroko Yamanaka (for women's featherweight title)
Gegard Mousasi vs. Ovince St. Preux
Billy Evangelista vs. K.J. Noons

PRELIMINARY CARD

Roger Bowling vs. Jerron Peoples
Caros Fodor vs. Justin Wilcox
Devin Cole vs. Gabriel Salinas-Jones
Fernando Gonzalez vs. Eddie Mendez
Chris Brown vs. Herman Terrado

Showtime card looks really good. Melendez is a top LW and Masvidal is a tough challenge, Cyborg fights are always a spectacle, Mousasi is pretty good, and Evangelista vs. Noons could be a hell of a fight.

Prelim card is full of guys I couldn't pick out of a lineup, other than Justin Wilcox. Doesn't particularly matter, since Showtime doesn't usually show prelim card fights anyway.

I don't understand the appeal of women's MMA. It's just awkward to watch, especially since it's usually one girl slowly and sloppily beating the **** out of the other girl. But I like the other fights.

I'll take,

Cyborg
Mousasi

Don't sleep on St. Preux. He has been on a pretty sick roll lately.

Rooting for St. Preux due to the Tennessee connection.

I think Mousasi damages him too much throughout, though. Also, I'd love Mousasi in the ufc. Awesome striker although tons of ufc guys would ragdoll him due to possibly the weakest wrestling in the division.

Tennessee is where you're from originally? I hardly even think of that as the south. Was there as both a kid and then adult (in college). Good food and music. People were friendly and girls were hot. Nashville, more like Assville.

Anyways, I have an idea who you're rooting for in the Bowling-Peoples fight. 10.5 pounds over limit. :o

Masvidal will beat Melendez if he doesn't choke again. He's the stronger guy, as well as a more powerful and technical striker.

Melendez gets exposed here, IMO.

That is a bold pick. I don't see it. Masvidal is talented, but he is notorious for laying an egg in his biggest fights.

It's bold, but not when you consider that a Masvidal completely on his game could very well beat Melendez, with the built in excuse of "oh he just didn't show up" if Melendez wins, as he's expected to do.

Props to anyone bold enough to lay some coin down on it though. There's good money in it (+300) if you do.

I have no opinion on Masvidal, I don't know if he'll be the one to expose Gil. Just not a Melendez fan. I think there are a dozen guys in the UFC way too athletic for him.

I laid 50 on Masvidal. I think he'll win, I'm just concerned about the choke. If he loses, that's how it'll probably occur. He's up early and then does just enough to lose. But I don't think it's more likely than not to occur, let alone 3:1.

Yessir, originally from TN, closer to Knoxville than Nashville though. And yea, even when I go back now I'm still taken back by the girls there. Not sure if its an illusion due to the girls not being in coats and baggy clothes 9 months of the year or what, but its a nice change. :D

Oh, and WAR Masvidal! I think the "he chokes in big fights" thing is way overblown anyway.

Actually I thought the girls from Knoxville were even hotter (maybe that's because I was hanging around U-Tenn), but as obvious of a pun did not conjure up for me. What about - Knoxville, more like Knockersville.

I think though the majority of the perception that the girls are that much hotter does stem from the fact they wear less clothing. I've had friends say to me during the summer that the girls in the area seem to be getting hotter. In reality it's the same girls, just not dressed in burka like outfits.

Yea, the only other possible explanation is the the make-up of the people there. Maybe some would just prefer the predominantly English Tennesseans as opposed to the more German Wisconsinites (or vice versa).

Number of times they have called St. Preux either "gsp" or "st. pierre" so far: 3, maybe 4.
