We already have a thread about Fielder + Darvish, but I have here an actual article from ESPN.

In my dreams, once we have Darvish and Fielder, and start competiting for WSes, we manage to bring back Doc when his contract with the Phillies expires, and let him win a ring or two with us before retiring.

The Phillies are an aging team on the decline

Their pitching will keep them in contention, but that offense could be in trouble going forward

If the Jays have the more competitive roster when Halladay's contract is up, I could see him returning to Toronto

Realistically, I can only see three teams that Halliday would sign his next contract with. The Phillies, the Jays, or that team where all great pitchers go to die, the Yankees. And I can't see him going to the Yankees.

If we get Darvish i don't see us signing any other big names right now. Most likely a lefty in the pen , another utilty infielder will be signed and that's about it. I'm not really comfortable with Teahen being a left handed bench bat either.

I feel that Lind and Edwin could help us out as DH and Fielder would be nice but I am prepared to cheer for Lind and Edwin on a day to day basis even though that takes away from our "beats in the east" status hmm.. I still thinK Ricky is the ACE aka number 1 and Yu is are number 2. I dont think you can take that away from Ricky. It is Ricky job to lose but all that rotation that matters is who pitches on opening day and from there its who evers game to be had.

Cecil is going to have to be moved to the pen or be traded.

How do you like his OPS against lines against LHP - .186/.282/.202. .457 OPS against! Compared to righties - .282/.337/.488. He has a pretty dramatic split.

With his decline in velocity, Darvish on board and all the organizational pressure; I don't think he's a starter on this team anymore. Maybe he gets traded but I think his ultimate destination is to be a dominant LHR in high leverage situations.

Really when you say ace you mean starting day pitcher. Which won't be a sure thing next year considering he'd be the only lefty (more than likely) in our starting rotation.

Another thing ridiculous about his splits is 22 home runs given up last season , all of them to righties.

Cecil is only 26, and might be a .500 starter on a team in a weaker division. If we can't trade him then the option you mentioned would definitely be the next best thing for him to stay with our team, otherwise I can't really see a spot for him either.

I would imagine AA is checking for takers on Cecil and if other teams won't bite, Cecil's value would next be as either a lefty specialist or emergency starter/long relief man, that's if does have any value? Not much.

I think he deserves more of a shot in the rotation than McGowan does. Having a rookie catcher didn't help the 24 year old's season.

Agreed. For now I'm personally pencilling in Cecil...

NOT that this is standard-practice or even necessarily a good idea, but having that "6th starter" in McGowan would be very handy this year - give him the odd start in front on Darvish ---- rests Darvish who is used to pitching once a week, while also limiting innings on McGowan who needs to tread carefully with his shoulder. Its not a very efficient use of a roster spot but, though I favour Cecil for a regular turn, I'd love to keep McGowan in a role that contributes and promotes his full recovery at the same time... Man, I'd have a tough time coaching and making cuts in little league!! Let them all play!! :lol:

I'de rather McGowan over Cecil.

If McGowan can come back and pull a Marcum it would be a huge boon for the team.

McGowan, has some heat, strike's guys out, gets groudballs at a decent clip, and opponents over the last 2 years before injury were averaging .682ops against him.

Cecil otoh fairs worse at all those things, and opponents put up .788ops against him. I don't think he has as good of a shot to make it in the AL east. Even his one good season where he put up 15 wins was a bit fluky. He went 4-0 in september while posting a 6.92ERA and 1.94 WHIP.
