Set plays? Not so fast.

Post#1 » by Miamis3rdRing » Tue Dec 20, 2011 1:41 am

The players, in this case some of the most talented players in the NBA, have been told to simply be themselves, do what comes naturally, even if it leaves the head coach with a bit of free time as the clock is ticking.

"We're just going to get out there and flow into it; we're not going to make any calls," forward Chris Bosh said following Monday's practice at AmericanAirlines Arena. "I think last year we were too bent on making calls, trying to run a specific play every time, when the set can really just be free-flowing.

"We have the basketball IQ to just go out there and play basketball."

If there's more off the ball movement I'm not going to complain, but if it's the same as last year I'll be pretty pissed off.

This is the kind of thing that can be really good (pretty much how Magic ran the offense back in Riles Lakers' days), but has the potential to be epically bad, and also sounds awful coming from the players right after a Finals in which they lost as the favorite.

The mistake isn't that they're doing this, it could actually work out fantastic, and will definitely make better use of their speed on the break. But having the players discuss it with the media before they've even played any games to see how it goes.

Now the second they have a less than stellar offensive performance, people will attack this strategy and tear it apart, even if they improve overall from last season.

the fact that a structured culture like ours is going to rely more on our playes instincts and less on calling sets SPEAKS VOLUMES to three things.
1. How much our chemistry has improved because of our playoff run
2. how insanely talented our best players are
3. how Spoelstra is growing as a coach to play to his pesonnel and play to our strengths

I think its a REALLY good sign.

Not like it matters.

If the story were "Heat to run even more set plays", that would be spun in a negative way as well (They still can't be trusted to run offense? Won't listen to coach!).

Ultimately all that matters is how they play. It went alright in game #1. I actually really liked the way Wade/LeBron played off each other, want to see more of that.

Yeah, I found it on the Bulls board lol. I don't read Ira's articles very often.

Like others have said, there are positives to this. Let fans of teams that hope to challenge us have their fun right now, just as they did last year during the regular season.

When April and May roll by, the Heat will be sending their teams home for an early summer vacation.

Other teams are going to mock everything this team does until we win a championship, have to get used to it.

And even if/when we do, its going to turn into "what about 5, 6, 7" (completely ignoring context), making fun of whoever between LeBron/Wade doesn't win FMVP (or both if its Bosh), and on and on and on. Just try to enjoy what we've got going and don't worry about the noise.

I had fun watching the game on Sunday :)

They started off last season running a motion offense, which is what this sounds like. They were talking about spacing and all that crap last season. As long as it works, I'm fine with it. PEACE.

I like this idea, it's worth a try and is a sample of those adjustments i have been speaking of. We have the talent to make it work.

After reading These Comments

"I think it's comforting, knowing that we have a short period of time to try to get in shape, try to get the new guys involved, trying to do all these things, but not having to worry about that as much," he said of learning and drilling through specific sets.

"Let's just play basketball. Let's use our talents. Let's use our IQs of the game just to play. So I think Spo has done an unbelievable job so far, in this training camp, of getting guys ready, but making them comfortable, as well."

James said it makes sense to play at pace against defenses so focused on taking away the Heat's trademark pick-and-roll sets.

"It's been great," he said. "It suits our personnel. It's been good for us offensively just to read and react. No matter if it's a make or a miss, we want to get the ball up the floor fast. That's something we didn't do well last year."

Love this

This is good

This is better than Spo calling plays and trying to force the them into ROLES that don't fit.

It could be bad, it could lead to chucking and WTF faces...but lets try go with the flow not go with the Spo.

This could work so long as there are principles to the offense, to sort of follow. Things like...don't isolate on the wing and hold the ball for ten seconds. If a point guard is guaring any of the big three, they need to post.

We have to use our speed though that's for sure. It's our biggest advantage on every team in the league. We have the fastest guys who are the best finishers. We should be running on every miss and every make.

Oh great. This is why Spoelstra's seen as such a poor offensive coach, because he can't get the guys to buy into his gameplan. I agree with loosening the reins when it comes to getting into the transition game, but if we let these guys just freelance out there for entire possessions any more than they already do the players will simply be even less inclined to move without the ball. We need decoys for a lot of our plays to work and to keep opposing defenses honest, but without off-ball movement it makes it that much harder for our supporting players to put pressure on the opposing defense to open things up for our Big 3.
LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

What a great way of saying "I suck as an offensive coach, let them do whatever the hell they want".

You guys remember that game LeBron had in 2007 against Detroit? Scoring 20+ consecutive points? If he does that then I have no problem with this LMAO.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that their free-flowing offense will feature a lot of iso.
