Free Agency

Post#1 » by eagle13 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 4:16 pm

Didn't think this topic fit the leadup thread. I know its early but today's JS article about Dec 31st as last day to extend & put $ in this year & Wells got me wondering. Finley likely to get tagged but what about Wells? IMO he should definitely be resigned. He's 31 so TT might pass - but I think that would be huge mistake (ala Jenkins) considering the suspect status of our OL and he's been healthy. What do you guys think?

Tag Finley unless he takes a deal like 5Y/25-30M.
Definitely resign Wells.

If Sitton wants top C money I let him walk. It's strictly an age thing.

Let Finley go. So sick of Finley!

And Sitton already got a contract extension so I don't know what bizzare world you guys live in.

Scared me for a sec. But I think Wells is very underrated. Hes the only player on our offensive line that has played every game this year. He is a great center. Blocks very well, and I don't ever see him mess up snaps. I watch some teams this year and all the mess ups with snaps is crazy.

I would consider Wells a way bigger priority than Finley. I do got Finley hate right now. Hes just been a bust to me. And hes a greedy cocky player so Im sure he thinks he should get paid top TE money. Hes in a contract year and blows.

Atleast Finley could pull a John Salmons and atleast play up to his potential for a contract year. Finley has not earned top 10 TE money. Hes not a top 10 TE. And with all the drops he shouldnt even be starting.

I wouldn't list Burnett as a 'need' until he actually does something.

I'm not a safety expert or anything... but he has been getting pretty poor reviews and he seems out of position a lot to me.

Yeah, I guess Burnett would be more of a question mark. I just figured he is essentially our only decent (young) safety going forward (unless Woody switches). I think he'll be a good starting safety some day.

Hard to project after next year except guys like Jennings and Matthews. We'll have another couple of drafts, guys will get hurt, etc. Matsay and Shields definitely and they'll be restricted.

Might sound stupid but I would love to lock up Matsay for as long as possible.

I'm not worried about Masthay, mostly because punters aren't expensive and I doubt he has the type of ego that will feel some need to hit the market and get max money, TT will lock him up when the time is right.

I know this might sound crazy to everyone, but the guy I hope TT considers moving after the season is Greg Jennings. Hear me out:

1. 2012 will be the last year of his contract
2. The franchise tag for WR's after that year will be 10+ mil
3. I think Randall Cobb is going to end up the best of the 5 currently on the roster
4. There are some WR deprieved teams out there picking in the top 15 of the draft this year (STL, JAX, CLE, WAS, CAR, TEN)

Plus, check out GJ and Finley's combined #'s this year:
Catches Yards TDs
10 142 1
7 123 1
16 204 3
10 131 1
8 149 1
7 102 0
9 160 2

11 90 2
6 99 1
3 36 0
7 112 1
13 181 2
2 20 0

109 1549 15 (combined for 13 weeks)
8.38 119 1.15 (average per week)

How do you justify 15-18 mil / year for this between 2 players?

I think if you can snag a top 15 pick, you have to at least consider it, right? Plus we all know how TT dominances drafting WR's. Maybe I just want to see some more Cobb next year . . . .
