Contrary to published reports, the top sealed bid submitted for star Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish on Wednesday was the highest in the history of the posting process, exceeding the record $51.1 million fee that the Boston Red Sox paid the Seibu Lions for the rights to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2006, according to Japanese league officials.

Though the identity of the major league franchise that won exclusive negotiating rights to the 25-year-old right-hander has yet to be revealed, Japanese league officials say that the offer to Darvish's team, the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, is higher than the $40-48 million range that has been reported in the U.S. and Japan.

The Fighters have until Tuesday to accept or reject the highest bid. If they accept, the high bidder has 30 days to work out a deal with Darvish's agents. If no agreement is reached, Darvish returns to the Fighters for another season, and no money changes hands.

About a half-dozen major league teams entered the auction for Darvish, who has a 1.99 ERA over seven seasons in Japan. He's reportedly seeking a five-year, $75 million contract, which would push the total package to more than $125 million. The two most aggressive bidders are believed to have been the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/b ... &eref=sihp

Think he will be able to have a better career in the States than Matsuzaka ? Who has pretty much been a bust. Although he was part of '07 World Champion Red Sox.

I think so.

The amount of money it's going to cost the team to get him here and under contract is unbelievable. I think it's the Yankees.

I thought people were speculating it was the Blue Jays? Anyway, I think he'll be better than Daisuke.

The Rangers? I find that interesting if it's the truth.

ESPN's Buster Olney spoke with a source Monday who suggested that the Rangers might have won exclusive negotiating rights to Japanese righty Yu Darvish.
Many have suspected that the Blue Jays made the highest bid, and the New York Post even crowned Toronto as the winner last week. But Olney spoke to an American League executive Monday afternoon who said the "smart money is on the Rangers." Darvish, 25, posted a sparkling 1.44 ERA and 276/36 K/BB ratio in 232 innings this past season in Japan. The Nippon-Ham Fighters are expected to make an announcement on his probable landing spot Monday night.

Nolan Ryan stepping up to get another pitcher. They lose CJ to the Angels, just find a replacement. The way they know pitching there in Texas, you have to think that Ryan and the Maddox brothers think quite a lot of this kid. Will be interested to see him pitch in the MLB.

According to a TMZ report the heavy testosterone in Braun's system was triggered by medication he needed.

Agreed Braun has been one of my favorite players and has been a class act; if it's found out that Braun really was using performance enhancing drugs his legacy will be forever ruined.

Sounds like Gio to the Nats is done. Braves could easily finish 4th in the division this year. SMDH.

At least the Nats had to give up some real good prospects to get it done.

Well if there's a silver lining to this (other than the fact that the Nats to give those prospects) is that now Jair Jurrjens is the most attractive pitcher on the market, so we could get a much better package for him now then we would've earlier.

Don't forget about Matt Garza.

Nationals gave up a lot to get Gio, but he is a very young player who can really make a difference. He gives them 3 really strong pitchers for the top of the rotation. They are going to be tough. I trust Wren, but right now, I am very anxious about how things look for the Braves. As said above, it wont shock me to see us mired in 4th in the Division. Doing nothing and hoping our players have a bounce back year seems very risky. Not really feeling good about things at this point. But I will pull for my Braves to the end.

Oakland is the other team I support. I love the trade for them due to all the prospects involved, but it's typical Oakland style, and it can be difficult at times supporting a team like that.

Good addition for the Cards.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have reached a two-year, $26 million contract with free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran.
Beltran, 34, batted .300 with a .910 OPS and 22 home runs in 142 games this past season for the Mets and Giants, and should help replace some of the offense lost in the Albert Pujols departure. He'll likely open the year in right field, but could move to center once Allen Craig recovers from his offseason knee surgery. It's a nice, short-term risk for the Redbirds, who will hope for good health from their injury-prone lineup in 2012.

Seven Teams Looking At One-Year Deal For Oswalt

There are seven teams, including two from the National League East, that are interested in signing veteran right-hander Roy Oswalt to a one-year deal, according to a report.

Three of the seven teams in the race are expected to be long shots.

The Marlins, Nationals, Red Sox and Blue Jays are believed to be the most realistic landing spots.

Nats and Marlins are interested. Hopefully Oswalt goes to the AL.

Since we're in that part of the off-season were there's not much going on, former Braves great Ryan Langerhans signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Albert Pujols of Anaheim. I'm pretty sure that's what the new team name is.

Wonder how much he is looking for ? If he is looking for less than 10 mil for the 1 season, I actually wouldn't mind having a Oswalt for a season.

I think Oswalt stays in the NL. I guess that leaves the Nats or Marlins and I'll hate to see it happen. If he wants to be in the best position to win a ring among the four teams we know of he'll sign with the Red Sox.

Only assuming; but $6-$7 million would be my guess of what he's seeking.
