do you honestly think managers have that big an impact on the field? if you're going to fire torre, that means you've got to blow up the team. arod must go, melky for pitching etc.
if you get rid of torre that tells everyone that no one is safe. itll be deluisional to think that this will light a fire under anyone. you guys need to get your pitching straightened out- not your 1-9 hitters. pitching pitching pitching.
Holy crap, so you're saying these players might ACTUALLY play with even a little chip on their shoulder? God forbid!!
I now change my mind, give Torre an extension.
BTW, our pitching has been phenominal of late...really since the Clemens signing. And with Clemens and Hughes set to return soon, no moves have to be made there. And obviously no moves need to be made in the lineup as we have about 7 all stars. So where does that lead us? Oh that's right, the manager.
And if you think that managers play no role in what goes on on the field, then THAT is being deluisional. There is a reason that guys like Torre get paid $5 million a year, more than a lot of players...and that reason isn't just to fill out a lineup card 162 times.

I don't know about ARod caring one bit if Torre is here or not. It was Torre after all that embarrased him (yeah he contributed to that as well) during last years playoffs by dropping him to 8th in the order.
As far as Jeter, Posada and Clemens? I think Jeter and Posada are professionals and realize that this is a business. Jeter will is under contract and I don't see him as a guy that would demand a trade if they fire Torre. Same with Posada.
Clemens is only signed for one year and there's no guarantee that he'd pitch next season.
If you want to fire Torre, you gotta blow up the team and re-knew its whole identity. The Yankees have been one way for a long time, and they aren't going to just change like that. The players have Torre's back.
I don't see why you have to blow up the team. You may have to make some more moves but it's kinda apparent that this mix of players just doesn't have enough to win it all (see last how many seasons?). But that doesn't mean that Torre shouldn't be fired.
As for whether the players have Torre's back? If they really did, then they'd play like they give a darn a whole lot more than they have.

??? Clemens pointed to a chat with the Boss as the big reason he's coming back. His respect for the manager and some of the players were also mentioned but Torre was not THE reason he's coming back. $28 million and the ability to do whatever he wants was the reason. Let's not start fantasize about what Clemens is and isn't.

The smaller, better change is the one that the organization will never do, which is bump Donny off the bench and bring in an established bench coach that will tell Torre what he needs to hear, like how he's insane for bringing in Mike Myers in the first inning of a Subway Series game.

You can move him back to the bench next year to consult our new manager, ideally one with a clue on how to handle a pitching staff.
