Starting Lineup Math

Post#1 » by retiredcoach » Mon Dec 26, 2011 11:35 pm

I'm not sure why Corbin won't announce the starting lineup. Maybe he's been getting calls from the player's Moms asking him for more playing time for jr.

He says everyone on the team is good and deserves to start, so I did the combinatorial mathematics (yes, I actually have a brain with an education) on the 13 players the Jazz have using 5 at a time. There are 1287 possible starting lineups.

If the Jazz add two more players to the roster, then there will be 3003 possible starting lineups.

Given how much trouble it's been for Corbin, who has a degree in computer science, to pick 5 guys and actually speak their names, I'm guessing that KOC doesn't want to add any more players thus increasing possible combinations of starting lineups to confuse Corbin even more.

In observing Sloan, I'm guessing he didn't understand sh** about arithmetic, much less combinations and permutations. He just looked at the 15 guys on the bench and only saw one combination of 5 he called starters.

The formulas I used to calculate these numbers are unbiased. They don't have a relationship with CJ, for example, but Corbin does and often his relationship clouds the facts. Locke says that Corbin has said publically that CJ could be bonafide scorer in the NBA. Okay, so now we know Corbin has bonafide CJ blindness and doesn't know when he's chucking bricks and needs to sit on the bench.

I have not added any constraints to the basic combinatorial formulas to provide for CJ bias.

Finally, some objective facts get posted, and they are ramblings of a madman. Obviously spoken by a math challenged person.

I didn't find anything useful in your post other than the number of permutations of a 13 man roster and 15, which isn't really helpful.

I am more than adequate at math for my needs.

Only things that come to my mind (and i'm guessing..)

1. why announce your starters at all until required? This only gives the Lakers more information and time to prepare for the Jazz..they have no clue who's starting yet the Lakers have played 2 games already and our coaches/scouts already have a good idea what's going with the Laker team and can prepare our players.

2. doesn't give the local any time to ask stupid questions like "do you think you deserve to start?" "you were named a starter how does that make you feel? Do you think player X should have started?" Basically you wouldn't want players speculating or explaining anything, or misreading or taking things out of context in the local media. Basically, you want the players to focus on the first game not stuff in the paper/tv.

3. I'm sure the players know who starts, and you want to keep anything said in the locker room - in the locker room ... I would tell the team as a group why I picked who to start and what the gameplan is and I wouldn't announce it until required by the NBA for reasons above..

(I like the math you did there though..but those are just guesses of mine)

No audio, but I can recommend some good remedial classes in reading and some self help courses in motivation.

Last year Bell cried like a little girl about not starting, and because they didn't hold his hand when they told him.

I think Ty is letting them know that even if they start, that could change in a hurry if they suck ass. I kinda like this idea.
