That's actualy the precise reason Gil wouldn't have incentive to just take the minimum from any team. He can take time to find a desirable situation knowing that he's getting paid no mater what. I'm not taking the position that he's in high demand -- the Knicks plainly preferable the corpse of Mike Bibby and Baron Davis, who could be out for a month or two.

I don't think he'll end up on an elite contender because he's so defensively challenged. Perhaps he could land on a playoff team as a scorer off the bench (Mempis if they deal Mayo?). I'd guess he'll end up on a talent starved team like Charlotte, Cleveland, Phoenix or Minnesota.

And in similar news... Clinton Portis is still mulling over offers from playoff teams...

He didn't have a choice. If any team had offered the minimum after he got amnestied he would have to go to that team. he didn't have the option of choosing his team.

The reason he is unrestricted now is because he cleared waivers. no team offered anything for him.

You are confused as to the process. The only amnestied player who was "claimed" was Chauncey Billups. Vince Carter cleared waivers and signed as a free agent, just as Arenas will do. I'll say again, the idea that Arenas isn't on a roster means no one is willing to offer him the minimum is a fallacy. For all you know 5 teams wanted to sign him and Arenas is holding out for a team he likes.

The idea that a player who is one NBA season removed from averaging 22/4/7 can't get a minimum contract is far fetched to say the least unless there is something else going on.

Gil's 22/4/7 season wasn't a good 22/4/7, and Wiz fans should know that better than anyone else. He was horribly inefficient -- both shooting and turnovers. The last time he was Agent Zero -- one of the top offensive weapons in the game -- was 2008, and there's been a TON of stuff happened since then. Given the injuries and the personal baggage, I can see teams staying away -- even at the minimum.

That said, I think he'll probably get a shot somewhere at some point. If he stays in shape. If he can say the right things about fitting in, acting right, etc. Someone's going to hope he can be an offensive threat for them. The trouble, of course, is that he's a guy who's needed the ball to be an effective offensive threat. He'll probably need to learn to play off the ball to be valuable, and that's a tough transition for some guys. Or use him as an alpha scorer off the bench -- IF he can get back some efficiency AND adapt to a bench role.

Yup. Nobody declines faster than ball-dominant combo guards. Because of their typically sub-par defense, they're only useful as long as they can score at an average or better clip. Once they lose a step and become below-average-efficiency scorers, they suddenly lack any above-average NBA skill. Players without any above-average skills are not good as primary options or role players.

Agreed nate. What made Gil so lethal was the combination of quickness/speed, strength to finish in traffic while getting hit, and nearly unlimited range on his jumper. He was nearly an impossible cover at his peak. The knee injury has taken just enough quickness that he's guardable now.

Let me count the ways you are wrong.

Vince was bought out for $4 million. He was not amnestied. He only had 1 year left on his contract and only $4 million of that was guaranteed. They wouldn't amnesty a guy that has only $4 million on his contract.

NBA Free Agency: Vince Carter Waived By Phoenix Suns, According To Report
by Mike Prada

In a move that comes as little surprise, the Phoenix Suns have waived Vince Carter, according to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic. The Suns owed Carter $18 million for next year, unless they waived him within 72 hours of the beginning of the free-agent period. The Suns will now owe him only $4 million next season.

Travis Outlaw was claimed of the amnesty wire by the Kings. Arenas is the only amnestied player not in the NBA.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Sacramento Kings have claimed forward Travis Outlaw off waivers under the NBA's new amnesty provision, filling out the frontcourt with another veteran.

The Kings announced the move Saturday night before opening the preseason at the Golden State Warriors.

If nobody bids on a player then they become a ufa. The only amnestied player that wasnt claimed was Arenas.

If no team bids for him, I think he becomes a FA. Don't teams bidding for waived/amnestied players have to take him for the remainder of his contract, and only teams under the salary cap can bid? As a FA, teams can offer him a single year contract and over-the-cap teams can offer veteran minimum bids. Maybe some team with cap room this year decides to make a one-year offer, or a team like the Lakers or Heat takes a shot at the minimum.

If you claim a player during normal waivers, you take on the entire amount remaining on the contract. Every player I can think of has cleared waivers.

Under the amnesty rule, teams under the salary cap can bid a partial amount of the remaining contract. I am pretty sure the length and structure is the same as the original contract.
