Yep. He actually played well. Still can't believe he hit that shot from DWill's behind the back pass.

As long as he doesn't try to play hero or play outside of his game he'll be good.

My thoughts after Game 1 :

Post#303 » by l3ulls3y3 » Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:06 am

- Farmar still has value, and Gaines outplayed him. If he continues to outplay Farmar, we should look to trade him while he's still viewed as a pretty good backup PG.

- Petro seems to be hitting that free throw line jumper off D-Will penetration. He doesn't look as much of a liability as last year.

- Sheldon Williams can NOT play.

- Damion James can rebound, but we need to get him more touches in transition

- Marshon Brooks needs to get more playtime. He is probably the only player on the team aside from D-Will who can hit shots off the dribble and create offense. I would MUCH rather have him playing minutes at the 3 over Shawne Williams, even though it'd be a defensive liability.

- Kris is a machine.

- Mehmet Okur looks slow and rusty.

Agreed, I've long been an advocate of Gaines over Farmar, and tonight, Gaines was a huge spark off the bench. Aside from his shooting, he doesn't do much wrong at all. I love his tenacity and hustle.

So have I and tonight Gaines just proved that he's the better option at this point.

Off night for the Celtics so I watched most of the Nets/Wizards game and I liked what I saw from Humphries and Deron. Humphries is a rebounding monster and looks like he finally stopped taking the bad shots that hindered his career early on. I still can't believe that you traded Najera to freaking get him. :o

P.S. Please have a better record than the Knicks.

Thanks, same to you! :p

Seriously, I am pleased with the P&R rapport Kris and Deron have. Hump's numbers were good all last year, but he averaged like 15 and 14 after the Deron Williams trade. Actually, Morrow had a similar boost in production last Spring, and I'm disappointed that I haven't seen more efficiency from him thus far (I know, two preseason games and one regular season game isn't a large sample size).

Damion James didn't have a good scoring game today but his hustle play was huge today. 14 rebounds in 38 mins.

CHECK THE FIRST POST. WHO DA F' CALLED THIS **** FROM THE GET-GO?

THAT'S RIGHT yo boy StephGRAHAMbury was one this **** from tip-off.

---

As for Damion James... As many of you know I'm probably his biggest (only?) proponent on this board and though I will admit that he looked awfully out of sorts offensively*, you have to love his hustle.

James is a true glue guy and seems to genuinely enjoy getting after it on defense. We're not looking at an all-star with James but if we get get a Tony Allen-esque player? I'll take it.

*Mechanically James' jumper isn't terrible but what makes his attacks to the rim so hard to watch is that he's a two-footed leaper without much touch on his shots around the rim. James was more of a PF than a SF in college and right now it definitely shows.

^I'd certainly take a good defender. Honestly as long as he plays good defense I wouldn't mind his lack of offensive ability. Its not like this team is chock full of great defenders anyway, so having one player in the starting line up that can be relied upon to lockdown opponents is a plus.

On twitter, he said that he had an off night. Good to know that he is hard on himself.

Just finished watching the game on dvr.So glad we brought Humpty back I don't see us winning this game without him......Loved D.James hustle.D-Will hit some clutch 3s but that pass to Morrow for 3 in the 4th made me jump off the couch.Glad to see this team being competitive again.

Wow, what a rollercoaster. Went out in the middle of the second just as the comeback was starting, DVRed the game and just finished watching. Great win. Few thoughts:

Hump is a beast. I still think this board is a bit harsh on him. He's just a great position player. He was great defensively, blitzing all those pick and rolls and recovering to his man, he was great on the glass, he finished very well on offense... I still just don't see how at this point in their careers, Nene is THAT much better than him.

Having two guards in the line-up makes all the difference, that's why Gaines opened up so much. We need two guys who can face the defense with an active dribble and make a play on the court at the same time.

James is a very frustating player. He was excellent on D and on the glass, but his lack of skill leads to some really **** plays. Can't hate tho, he definitely earned his minutes tonight.

Wall looked bad. He kept throwing his body into defenders and not getting calls... still no perimeter game there. Deron played great D too.

This team looks like it has really bought in defensively, which is nice to see. Ultimately made the difference I think between two pretty **** offensive teams... Washington is a really bad team tho, they don't have any options when Wall can't get the break going or consistently penetrate in the half court. I still think we're gonna struggle to keep up with teams with a more fluid offense, but I'm def glad the Nets made my earlier thread comments look stupid and reactionary as hell tonight.

Oh yeah, I see real potential with Okur. He's a great passer and is very comfortable with the ball. Wasn't involved much tonight, but that pick and roll with Deron could really be something...

The good part about our bad start was that they weren't taking any bad shots. Those wide open 3's won't be repeatedly missed like that all season.

Okur needs to get in game shape.

I'm trying not to knee-jerk after one game, but Hump on his contract >>> Nene on his contract.

I think Memo's in shape, I feel like he just didn't really know where he was supposed to be/what role he should be playing yet. He'll get there.

Okur played in Turkey during the lockout. He just needs more practices with his new team.

When I say game shape I really meant just getting comfortable playing in the NBA again and with the Nets.

Wow, our starters (thanks to D-WIll) were all around +25, while our bench was all around -17

I was so surprised when I heard he was going to take a 1 year deal with us. I thought for sure someone would offer him a multiple year deal a little over the MLE. He is a tremendous value and a lot of teams couold use some depth in the frontcourt. Him and James are my two favorite Nets right now, two bad ass hustle players.

Yea, he's in shape but he kept it simple today to keep with the flow of the game. He didn't try to force anything today, which was good. Once he gets comfortable with the team, chemistry-wise, I can see him playing real well for us. He still has his shooting touch (judging by Turkey) and even though he missed his 3 shots tonight, his shot didn't look bad at all.

Return to Brooklyn Nets
