Before the year I thought we could be a playoff team without Rodgers. But with the way our defense is playing I think we'd only win like 5-7 games, to be honest.

Flynn would still have us as, most likely, a top 10 offense. But to compensate for how poor the D has been, we have to completely dominate to go above .500, IMO.

But agreed, we would be better than the Colts. Primarily because Flynn is actually a good player... where as Painter is just a scrub.

I hate all of this stupid "how do you define the MVP" and redefinitions of it.

Just give the award to the best player in the NFL. This year, that's Aaron Rodgers.

Also, I don't think the Colts would be in the playoffs this year even with Manning. They have no offensive line, their weapons are getting up their in age and their defense is even more abysmal than the Packers.

That team needs a rebuild something fierce.

I think they would have made the playoffs with Manning. Easily. They'd be in front of Cincy at the very least, who I like, but is going to get in by virtue of being the team that has killed themselves the least out of the teams not in the top 4 or 5 in the AFC.

Their weapons may have been getting a bit older, but I think Dallas Clark has an excellent season again with Manning. I think guys like Dallas Clark would not be noticeably "getting up there in age" if he had his guy out there. They should just call him Peyton Clark.

Brees votes will give Rodgers more motivation to dominate

I wish they would announce it right away. They vote before the playoffs. But it's not announced until Super Bowl Sunday. At least that's when Brady's was announced this year.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

They didn't make the playoffs, easily, last year. They won their final 4 games to eek in. Before that they were 6-6. Even with the late surge they finished 4 wins worse than the previous season, their defense dropped from 8th to 23rd in points allowed, and Manning's QB rating from 99.9 to 91.9. This season their defense followed the trend set last season and dropped to 30th in points allowed. I don't see how a declining Manning would have overcome that. He'd have had to be at least on the Rodgers-Brees-Brady level, but hasn't been near that good for a while. The reason for the demise of the Colts this year was more so due to age, talent depletion, and never addressing their backup QB situation because they took Manning's durability for granted. They used to have Sorgi as their backup QB and this year it was Curtis Painter. Both were oft backups in college. The Packers got similarly complacent when they used Doug Pedersen as their backup for years. You can't win with guys like that. But this team couldn't have won enough games to make the playoffs regardless of who was quarterback. That was the 2005 Packers, only Manning got injured at the right time for his rep whereas Favre got exposed as being on the decline and not a magician who could make a defense more than what they were.

Bern, here's an interesting thought. Why when we talk about the Saints/Packers/Patriots defenses being horrible and their QBs "saving" the team, do we not talk about the QB's affect on the defense? No, not Tebow actually playing defense, but do you ever think of how much field position these QBs save for their teams? All of the Packers, Saints, Pats give up ridiculous yardage because of shortcomings, the fact that they are taking chances on turnovers, and the fact that they are always ahead playing prevent/other team is passing 90% of the time.

So you really think that Curtis Painter running drives where they have to punt from their own 15 all the time or him throwing more (I realize Peyton's INT numbers were increasing) INTs in their own zone doesn't affect the defense?

I don't think the Colts' defense was as bad as most think. The Colts' schedule wasn't incredibly tough, and I think they are better than Cincy and therefore would have gotten in. Cincy is nice, but they are a young team on the rise that is in the middle of the AFC that played well to not blow some close games and therefore are going to win 9 or 10. I don't think the Colts have any problem eclipsing that, and in 20/20 hindsight of a Schaub injury, I think they may outdo the Texans for a playoff spot.

Peyton Manning beats the Jags when they lost 17-3. Cleveland, Tampa, KC suck and Painter almost beat them. They almost beat Pittsburgh with Painter, etc.

Also, I don't know why you're so concerned about their backup situation. If Manning missed 3 games and the Colts missed the playoffs by going 9-7 while going 0-3 in the games Manning missed, you can say that they were stupid not to focus on a backup.

Here is why nobody, unless you've groomed one like Flynn for a few years, has that viable of a backup behind their franchise QB...because if the QB misses a season and it is Brees, Rodgers, Brady (the Pats roster was incredible to have Cassell lead them), etc...you're screwed anyways.

Why should Indy invest in a QB with worries that Manning misses 10+ games? If he misses 3, it's nice to have a veteran that can hold on, but there is absolutely no reason to care about Sorgi or Painter or whoever if the guy misses 10+ games. You're screwed anyways, it's not worth investing $4 million in Rex Grossman every year in the chance that Manning misses 10+ games. They invested in Kerry Collins who wasn't a terrible thought on paper. What other caliber guy do you think they should have had on their roster? If Brees goes down for a long time, do you think Chase Daniel is going to lead the Saints to the promised land?
