2012 Heat Draft

Post#1 » by gobraves101905 » Wed Dec 28, 2011 8:23 pm

Just an interesting thought. Two very good and popular ex Heat players have sons playing well in college. Tim Hardaway Jr and Glen Rice Jr. I am pretty sure the Heat will have a 2012 1st round pick. Rice is not projecting to come out early, but is playing better than expected. Who would we take?

Rice would be a good pick for Miami. He is defense first. And we all know player and coaches sons usually have a great basketball IQ. Just an early season thought about the draft.

I look at the 2012 Draft assuming:
1. we win the championship
2. Howard finally retires (possibly to a coaching/development job with the heat)
3. Curry & Pittman were a useful parts of the title run & are retained
4. Varnado comes back

Giving us:
Chalmers/Cole
Wade/Miller
James/Battier/Jones
Bosh/Haslem/Varnado
Anthony/Curry/Pittman

Really, unless there's a talent that you just can't pass up, who drops for some reason, you draft for long-term fit. I'd be looking to get 1 big & 1 player who can step into Millers minutes when he declines. This is really our last chance to load up through the draft, as it's a strong draft & we don't have our 2013. Plus someone drafted in 2014 won't help the dynasty straight away.

I like idea of grabbing Nogueira ( in the 2nd) and stashing him as a Splitter-like pick.

We need to draft a center. That's it. We don't need any other position. Trade up if necessary. PEACE.

Riley needs to find someone dumb enough to trade a potential lotto pick to us.

I'd love I see Drummond on the Heat! [/wet dream]

Glen Rice Jr had a great game tonight against Duke. Guy is a better defender than scorer. His name is loved in Miami. Great late 1st round pick if he comes out.

I doubt this team is going to get a rookie Center in the draft. They got Pittman and the Heat have no patience at the Center position. I mean this team resulted in getting a guy who hasn't played more than 10 games in 3 years. Desperation. Then Gladness, since he was the 2nd tall guy in the scrimmage.

I'm sure they might trade their draft picks for role players or something. Though this team is also set for next season besides Juwan Howard, which will open up for another young guy. Vernado or whatever his name was would be fantastic.

They cultivated Pittman for a year and Joel still gets more minutes than him...

Unless Gladness is gone next season (highly possible) and they do draft a Center, I'd be surprised. And I won't be surprised if they don't play them. Even Gladness tried out for the Heat LAST SEASON and made it a year later lol.

2012 first round draft pick to Cleveland
Cleveland has the right to swap their own 2012 1st round pick with Miami's own 1st round pick. [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2012 second round draft pick from Memphis
Memphis' own 2012 2nd round pick to Miami (top 55 protected in the 2012 Draft). If Memphis' own 2012 2nd round pick is in the top 55 picks, then Memphis' obligations to Miami shall be extinguished. [Memphis - Miami, 1/7/2009]

have to consider Varnado finally coming over..so that's another big man

I believe he would have been on the squad in place of Gladness if not for the lockout.

The teams getting pretty loaded....I think we probably trade the pick for a future 1st unless there's someone we REALLY like.

This is where international scouting would be a good thing...keeping track of some guys in Europe like Lucas Nogueira who could probably be quickly developed into someone like Noah or stashed overseas while he develops.....but that's not one of our strengths

Wow didn't think this team would have a round pick for awhile

I'd LOVE Varnado on this team to replace JUWAN HOWARD.

How sick would that be?

I was under the impression that Varnado would be a replacement for Joel Anthony. He might not have the bulk, but he has the length, and is better than Anthony in every aspect of the game IMO. Wondering when he'll make an appearance.

Joel has like a few more years with the Heat and they aren't giving him up :\ Even though he hasn't had the same impact that he did last year off the bench. He doesn't even block so much now...

I always thought Pittman would become the starting Center eventually... next season.

Pittman's come a long way, and I get excited every time he comes in for us. He's really got a lot of things going for him. However, he's still not as skilled as Varnado.

IMO, Varnado only needs to bulk up a bit and he'd be a menace down low. He's got post moves, moves well without the ball, is a strong rebounder, and a ferocious shot blocker. If he can add 20 pounds of muscle (that's a maximum amount IMO), then he'd be something special.

Both guys are interesting cases, and I look forward to them spearheading a double headed attack at the center position a couple years from now. As much as Joel has showed this year, I don't see the potential in him like I do Jarvis.

Nah Joel still has a couple of years left on his contract. They aren't gonna just cut him. If Varnado was better than Joel at everything he would have been picked higher.

Its not like he was an unknown. He played in the SEC.

How much of Varnado have you seen outside of highlights?

My impressions of Varnado didn't come close to your descriptions. And adding 20 pounds of muscle to a skinny frame is almost impossible.
Your emotions fuel the narratives that you create. You see what you want to see. You believe what you want to believe. You ascribe meaning when it is not there. You create significance when it is not present.

I'm surprised that you'd think being better than Joel would instantly mean he'd be drafted higher than the top of the 2nd round. Joel is no star. Being better than Joel is no amazing feat.

So I have to prove myself do I....? Okay then. I'm from western NC, which just so happens to be ACC and SEC country. That's all you see on TV is matchups of those teams. I've just so happened to see Varnado play a few games. He's pretty good. He's better than Joel.

Adding 20 pounds to a skinny frame is no big deal. I did it. I gained 35 pounds in a year and a half while having an ectomorphic body type.
