ok. luck's going #1. if you concede the rams are happy with bradford, and minnesota will stick with ponder, last year's first rounder, cleveland is the first team likely in the market for a qb. tampa has freeman, but washington picks next and one would think their qb situation is even more dire than our own. very hard to see the skins ignoring rg3, if cleveland passes him up. jacksonville and carolina both took quarterbacks last year. miami needs a qb. buffalo just gave that kid from harvard a big deal. then there's us.
so... if we want rg3, we're going to need to do some dealin'. matt flynn, anyone?
Personally speaking, my order of targets are thus now:
1) RG III
2) Peyton Manning (if made available)
3) Matt Flynn
4) Ryan Tannehill, Landry Jones, etc... (or next best QB available in draft not named Luck or RG III)
(All this conjecturing is based upon the assumption that Luck goes #1 to Indy. If we can make a trade with Indy to obtain the rights to draft Luck, then by all means sell everything to get him lol)
Now that Barkley is out of the draft, obtaining the rights to draft RG III is a bit of a tall order. It seems like Minnesota is the team that we'd have to deal with to get him if you make the assumption that Cleveland will draft him with the 4th pick. This is not a certainty, as Holmgren has proved before that he's quite capable of choosing a vet over a rookie (Hasselbeck), and could just as easily target a guy like Flynn himself over RG III.
If such a scenario like that comes into play, then we'd probably have to deal with Tampa Bay, move up to the 5th spot in the draft to obtain the rights to draft RG III, assuming that Washington will draft him with the 6th pick. If Cleveland really wants RG III, however, they have a lot of draft bullets to move up to, say, the 2nd spot in the draft to get him, block us or anyone else from getting him.
It's hard to imagine RG III falling past Washington with the 6th pick, but I suppose it's possible. If so, then we'd likely have to move in front of Miami to draft him, as well as Kansas City if we lose the coin flip for the 11th pick with them, and that would mean adding Jacksonville and Carolina as potential trade partners to move up in the draft. Of course, this assumes that Jacksonville wouldn't take RG III themselves. Possible, I guess. Probable? Anything but at this point, it seems to me.
I added Peyton Manning to my list for obvious reasons. If Indy doesn't retain him, if Manning makes it clear that he's not done yet, and is healthy enough to go next year, why the hell not? Call me crazy, but we'd be instant Super Bowl contenders next year, wouldn't we? Not the favorites by any means, but certainly in the mix. Right?
Manning would have to take notice that Seattle might be one of the most desirable teams for him to go to this late in his career, a team with a vastly improved defense, young and potentially talented offensive line, solid running game anchored by Lynch, decent enough receiving corp for him to continue on his merry way shredding defenses, a true contender that could give him a few more shots at playoff glory.
If we went this route (just playing with the idea here), then we could draft a guy like Foles or someone else in the coming rounds to groom for the longer term future. What can I say? I like this idea if it does in fact present itself as an option.
As for Matt Flynn, I don't know much about him. I'm putting his name out there as the supposed top QB not now starting on a team. If he is in fact this guy, we'd have to consider obtaining him if we don't use our top pick on a QB.
If we don't move up in the draft, and Luck and RG III are off the board (likely), then we well might have the opportunity to draft Tannehill or Landry Jones with the 11th pick. Are they a "reach" with the 11th pick, assuming that they are still available then? Hard to say. We'll hear a lot more about this topic in the coming months leading up to the draft.
That's how I see it now. I wonder how the Hawks front office will be looking at it, how close to my way of thinking they are?
