Power Rankings

Post#1 » by shadowx » Mon Jan 2, 2012 4:56 pm

1 Miami (5-0)
Pace: 102.6 (1), Off: 107.4 (1), Def: 94.5 (6)
It's both strange and scary to see the Heat hitting game-winners and leading the league in pace and fast-break points (almost 25 per 100 possessions) after ranking 21st and 12th in those categories last season. The No. 1 offense faces two (early) top five defenses (Atlanta and Indiana) in their next three games.

Miami 5-0
Last Week: 2 Most impressive aspect of the best start in Heat history besides what we've seen from LeBron? In all five games, they've scored at least 23 points in transition. Miami went 20-2 last season when its running game cracked the 20s.

2. Miami Heat

Sunday's beatdown of the Charlotte Bobcats was an exclamation point on an impressive week. The Heat have won two close games thanks to Dwyane Wade's heroics and look like a team on a mission to erase the memories of last year's Finals failure.

If Miami finds a way to execute consistently in crunch time, the entire league is on alert.

ESPN POWER RANKINGS
Week 1

1. Miami 5-0 (Last Week: 2)

Most impressive aspect of the best start in Heat history besides what we've seen from LeBron? In all five games, they've scored at least 23 points in transition. Miami went 20-2 last season when its running game cracked the 20s.

2. Chicago 4-1 (Last Week: 4)

If point differential means something to you -- and by now it really should -- it's impressive to hear that none of Michael Jordan's teams did what the Derrick Rose-led Bulls did Sunday night in Memphis by winning a road game by 40 points.

3. Oklahoma City 5-0 (Last Week: 3)

Durant nearly became the first player since Air Jordan in 1986-87 to start a season with five straight 30-point games. And when KD scored only 12 in game No. 5, neither that nor or any Westbrookgate spillover stopped OKC from reaching 5-0.

4. Denver 3-2 (Last Week: 9)

Maybe I'm saying so because the committee (of one) was there in person to see Denver splatter the defending champs in its season opener, but the Nuggets -- with all their speed and depth -- look as dangerous as a team can when it loses two early.

5. Orlando 4-1 (Last Week: 12)

After his usual Christmas dud, Dwight Howard became the first player since Dennis Rodman in 1997 with back-to-back games with at least 24 boards. No signs yet, then, of DH12 checking out to try to force Orlando to trade him. Yet.

Heat aren't even in the top 10 in defense. Maybe last year, but the defense has given up too many 3's and it's skewing what actually happens in the game... besides giving up so many 3's. :|
