Agreed. I think it's one of those "he's little so he must be a crap defender" type things. He might not ever be a lock down defender but one on one I think he has been very serviceable. I have to start paying more attention to how he defends the P&R though.
I think it's for a few reasons-
1.)As you say he's a smaller PG so people think he can't D-up but they forget how much of a competitor he is, he's got a lot of heart & is a scrappy guy, he just wants to win & you can see that in his D.
2.)He is a flatout scorer, it's a stereotype when you are that good offensively that you can't/won't play D but it's a myth, look at MJ.
3.)He is so good as a prospect that people need something to pick on!!
I think it falls into the category like Biyombo cops that because he has so much defensive potential that he will never be a serviceable offensive player which is just BS. Kemba gets the opposite.
Kemba also suffers from the Brandon Roy syndrome when you come out of college as such a good player that people think you have reached your peak when in reality you are that good & just getting started
