Nets and Knicks: Rivals?

Post#1 » by EGarrett » Wed Jan 4, 2012 11:31 am

Someone on the main board just told me that a Nets fan can't also root for the Knicks because they are rivals.

I always thought the Nets and Knicks were more like brothers than rival teams...each team having their own space (or had their own space pre-move), but sharing the same geography and region...just like New Jersey and New York. But maybe I'm not doing it right and the Nets and Knicks are supposed to hate each other?

Depends who you ask.

Most casual NJ/NY fans probably don't view them as major rivals. I know plenty of people who support one more than the other but they hold nothing against the other team.

On RealGM, you have hardcore fans so many, if not most, will say that they're complete rivals and that they'd die before wearing the colors of the other team and going to a game lol.

I choose to be a Nets fan partly to root against the Knicks.

So yes, that would be a rivalry. Knicks fans probably don't see any rivalry when the Nets suck (like we do now), but there definitely is a rivalry from the Knicks side when the Nets are playoff team.

And it means there's twice as many local games to emotional attachment to -- the Nets to win, and the Knicks to lose.

They are in the same division and a local team, so yes they are rivals and unless you are a casual fan you can not root for both.

I don't see how you can root for both, they've always been rivals. Two teams so close to each other always naturally creates a rivalry. You can't root for both unless you're a dumb casual fan.

The only team I hate are the Lakers. I will hate the Knicks when they prove something.

i would root for the knicks if there fans werent degrading towards the nets considering that they have not won a playoff game in 10 years, meanwhile the nets have won a few playoff games and went to two finals

They are not rivals because they have never been good at the same time.

But, next season will start the biggest rivalry outside BOS v. LAL.

It was something more like 25 and 5 over his 6 and a half years here including sweeping them in the 1st round.

I have no association with both geographically, but I just love the Nets and hate the Knicks, especially their arrogant fans who always have a sense of entitlement since they play in the historic MSG...

It's funny, I don't hate the Knicks players specifically...I hate the Knicks because I hate 99% of their fans. Most of their logic is absolutely rediculous. I have a ton of friends who are Knicks fans and they are great people, until you start talking basketball with them. They also have no long term memory. They completely ignore the fact we dominated them for the better part of a decade because they are relevant now.

They get real fired up when I tell them they'll never win a title with D'Antoni as their coach. I stand by that statement I made the day they hired him and am 100% positive that is a true statement.

If the Nets get Howard while keeping Brooks, then they will easily be better and there would hardly be a rivlary. If vice-versa, there will be a great rivalry.

Knick fan here-

Never hated or even disliked the Nets. Now that's partially because the two teams have never been really good at the same time. Closest was probably around '92-'93 when the Nets had some very talented young players like Coleman, Anderson and my boy Petro. I loved watching Petro play and in a sense I was a Net fan as long as the Knicks weren't playing them. I cried when he died like he did, as I'm sure all Net fans did.

I also really really liked the J-Will, Van Horn, Cassel team in the late 90's. That was a very exciting team IMO. I'd switch over during Knick commercials and end up sticking w/the Net game sometimes. During the Kidd years I watched much less but it was more to do with the fact the Knicks were so BAD my interest in the league fell off.

I admittedly like to chide Net fans who happen to be Met and Jet fans (like myself) but it's all in fun, nothing vicious at all. I mean, with the teams I root for who am I to poke fun lol? However, I do notice more hate from Net fans when the Knicks "look" like they may be pretty good (say a month ago, not now) and I find it surprising b/c there really has never been an actual rivalry like the Rangers-Islanders or Rangers-Devils for example.

As a Knick and basketball fan I'd much prefer switching over to YES from time to time to catch a good/ineresting team then a really bad one, ya know? This is why I cannot hate/dislike the Nets as I'd much prefer watching good local basketball than act like a 3 year old and hope the other team is bad just because. Besides, I do act like a 3 year old rooting against the Yankees the other part of the year lol. :D
