I've been curious about what this term means to people, so give me an idea:
Who do you think the superstars are in this league?
Which players have the potential in them to reach your level of superstardom?
Superstars?

Re: Superstars?
Superstar: players that your girlfriend who doesn't know anything about basketball has name recognition for. Eg Kobe, LeBron, Wade
Star: The dominant guys who would be announced in a TNT commercial. Eg Dirk, Love, Nash, Howard

Re: Superstars?
I think at any given time there are only about 5 Superstars. I think the Media likes it this way, because giving all the attention and marketability to a select few as proved successful.
If you are thinking about more than name recognition, marketability, and "your girlfriend knowing who they are"...
I'd say a superstar is someone who could carry a team to a finals appearance. Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Dwight, Durant, Rose, Dirk.
I really want to add Chris Paul, but the most he's accomplished is becoming a #2 seed and losing to a very good Spurs team.
I think another term to consider could be Global superstars, as in guys who are foreign who bring a HUGE following worldwide. Rubio could very well become the next Dirk or Yao internationally. Well, the next Yao needs to come from a place with a gigantic population, but you get my drift. Rubio already has more hype than any international player since Yao, since Dirk took a year or two to really get popular.
