Love is great, but he's a long way from being a superstar (if he ever is one). Add to that the (restricted) free agency over his head, I don't see how he has more value than some of the names still on this list. At all.

RealGM: "Say, what do you think if we gave you Kevin Love for Dirk?"
Real life: "What? The same Dirk who is a huge international superstar and just came off a Finals MVP?"
RealGM: "Actually, now that I think of it, that's not enough. Throw in a couple of first rounders."
Real life: "Walk east until your hat floats."

Love
Gordon

^^ I don't think most teams would take Dirk over Love right now, although Dallas wouldn't trade Dirk for Love. The only teams that would be willing to take him on are championship contenders with the ability to pay that salary, and that's really a very short list. Love is RFA and much younger, and IMO, has really stepped up his game this year.

Disagree. I think in the real world, more teams would rather have the superstar than the very good player and capspace. Superstars are gold in the NBA more so than any other league (1) because of the way they are marketed, and (2) because individual players play so many of the team's possible minutes (unlike football, where they only play half the game and share the field with 10 teammates at once, or baseball for similar reasons). You take the superstar and you build around him, even if that means changing your plans.

And even if you don't want Dirk or Kobe himself, you can always turn around and trade him to a contending team because, IMHO, his trade value is higher!

(Just to be clear, I like Love and I'm impressed as hell with the way he's playing. But if you tell me "Kevin Love is worth more than a superstar", you'd better make a damn good case. So far I haven't heard one that convinces me.)

Why do you see this as a bad thing? The way the CBA is written, virtually every rookie star signs an extension, because it's way too risky to gamble the first $40-50 mil free agent deal that you won't get an injury. He doesn't have the money in the bank, and he won't have leverage to force a trade until year seven or eight (like some vets already do - a serious problem right now to many oftheir trade values). And finally, he's far cheaper this year, and even if he gets a max deal, he's going to be cheaper than some of the veteran stars on max deals.

I can understand argueing that even though he's a Top 10 NBA scorer, he's not the typical superstar who can create his own shot if it isn't coming off an offensive rebound. However, I think the contract part is a big benefit.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm a homer, but I've been saying the same thing to people who think they are going to get Eric Gordon in free agency, or hope to get Blake Griffin away from LAC in a couple years. The CBA makes those stars on rookie contracts gold.
