OT: Reds, Ryan Madson agree to 1 yr deal

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Reds and Ryan Madson have agreed to a contract.

Did we miss out on an opportunity to further bolster the pen further for a relatively 'cheap' price?

I doubt Madson would want to come to Toronto unless we guaranteed him the closer's role.

He probably had to be guaranteed the closer role through thick and thin and he also probably had to go somewhere that had absolute zero chance or interest in Prince. Boras wasn't messing with his Prince market for a 1 year flier deal on Madson to try and drive up his price.

This is pretty much the worst case scenario for Madson, short of being on a team with an established closer. Yet he was still overpriced and I wouldn't have wanted the Jays to sign him for this amount. In this case, "relatively cheap" still doesn't mean there's any value to be had. Unless there are no available upgrades to be made, there's no reason to blow that much on a relief pitcher that isn't named Mariano Rivera.

I wouldn't say there isn't any value there. 4/40 I absolutely agree, but CIN in a year where they need to compete and make the playoffs, at least they're making it look like they really want in this year, and no long-term risk and they'll get A compensation for him in a year most likely? Also, there was a pretty good fg article about relievers costing more like 17m/WAR in FA (which is lunacy I know), but how Win Probability added may explain the crazy market. I'm saying I think that market is crazy over-priced, but he may just give them enough increased probability in a year that it really counts for them that 10m will feel cheap by the end of the year if he's a bona fide light's out closer type for them.
