OT-Boston Community Thread

Post#1 » by Celtics_Champs » Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:49 am

This was suggested by some posters, and stolen from the Lakers board. This thread will be sort of like a get to know each other behind the keys type of thread while chatting about things going on that's not involving the NBA.

ideas on what to talk about
-Get to know each other without getting too personal
-Maybe some things to do around New England. Or for those outta towners, some cool stuff in your home state.
-Reminisce about favorite celtics moments
-talk about local news

Basically whatever you want without getting too deep into other sports. I saw some posts on here earlier this season about football, its fine, but lets not turn this into a NFL or Patriots thread, we have seperate boards for that. Same goes for other sports, and we also have an around the league thread for NBA thoughts.

I guess I'll start it off,

Your everyday masshole in my twenties. Going to college and working a part time job.

I was too young for the bird era, I became a real big fan of the Celtics in the mid to late 90's. Tim Duncan and David Robinson and the spurs came to town to battle Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker and I was hooked.

I loved the Waltah era. Would check online for celtics rumors. When I heard they traded for Gin Baker I jumped up. When I heard they traded for Delk and Rodgers I fell in love. But I got to say I became a hardcore fan when I started posting on here. I think the most times I posted in game threads was the year we sucked the worst. Loved watching the young guys play.

My favorite Celtic of all time is Paul Pierce.

30 odd year old Australian. Kids, partner, 2 dogs and too much grass to mow. Social Worker. Ex country footballer with bad back and bad knees....slighly over weight (or so my lady tells me, I say Im just built for comfort).

Celtics Fan, Richmond Tigers fan. Nutty Starwars collector aswell.

Started following the C's at distance around 94ish, last days of Larry and what turned out to be the last days of Reggie aswell. :( Dont get to see a heap of games live, time dif and all. But still read this forum a stack and any other Celtic stuff.

Fav players include Larry and Kevin, loved 'Toinne (matter fact I still would trade KG for him now straight up, u cant buy his talent.....), Paul of course!!!!! Luved the old guys, could watch Dave Cowens highlights all day! Rus, Cous, Hondo.
BANG!................. Marjong!

I am a hairy, overweight, balding and too quickly approaching middle age, exotic male dancer.

Over the summer, I had farmed in Barbados. Sold the land and returned to the States. Fiancee and I are planning on getting married but there is no rush. I am currently looking for 30-40 acres to set up shop. I plan on building an earth-sheltered, solar-heated home with my brothers. Currently splitting time between NYC and New England.

I eat seafood, fish, non-RBst dairy and organic eggs but otherwise avoid industrially farmed goods. I am really into sustainability, renewable energy and living frugally. I make and sell handmade soaps, body wash and shampoos. I also build solar arrays and have been working on a self-designed, low-impact, affordable wind generation project. I also dabble in aquaponics.

I speak passable Mandarin Chinese (mostly self-taught) and spent about a year teaching mathematics in Harbin, Heilongjiang (PRC.)

Mid-20's. Just graduated grad school with my Masters in Forensic Psych. Have a part-time job right now, but looking for something that mirrors my degree at the moment as a career. Got a GF of about a year now. That's about all the personal background info I'll give on myself. Don't trust open forums haha.

I've been watching Boston sports and the Celtics since I was in diapers. My family breathed Celtics during the Bird era like most families did. Been watching the team off and on my whole life. During their down years however I watched around the league for great players, because all the Celtics had to offer for a while was Pierce after 99. Started watching KG when he was drafted, and was a huge fan of his during his time in Minnesota. When he came to Boston it was one of the best presents a guy like me could ask for. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this team be a winning franchise for the past 5 years or so, i will miss it when it ends, and I hope this franchise can turn around quickly so we have another winning team to root for after this season.

17 years old here, from Latvia. That's Eastern Europe if geography isn't your strong part. Due to the time zone difference being 7 hours, I have to watch most games at about 2 - 3 AM my time, though matinee games for you guys mean comfortable evening games for me. I try and watch as much as I can - saw about half of last season's games and have seen all this year so far. It's because the games started when I got Christmas holidays, normally I wouldn't get up for weekday games because of school and only watch matches that are on Friday or Saturday. Even then, I'll get up for an important game even in the middle of the week. Pietrus debuts today, so I'll be up at 3 AM, watch the game and then go to school. I know, that's a bit crazy.

I originally became a fan in the beginning of the championship season, but don't judge - no bandwagon. That's what I started my NBA fandom with (I always supported KG, but not a lot, I really got into it in '07). Matter of fact, Kevin is the reason I am a Celtics fan, because I started following when I heard the trade news. Garnett was my favorite player, so I decided to stick with where he was going. Boy have I not been disappointed. And it looks like I'll be a Celts fan to the end.

^at 17 I wouldn't call you a bandwagon fan if you got into the NBA when the Celtics won in 07-08. i remember when I was 12-13 I watched this team and went to the games with my family , but I was nowhere near as die hard as I am today until I started college probably in the 05-06 season.

I'm a 19 (20 in a week) year old from New Hampsha. Started to watch Cs in 2000 and mom was a big Bird/Orr fan. I'm going to school for Architectural Engineering Technology but originally went for civil engineering. I'm in to four wheeling, video games, snowmobiling...

Been going to a game every year when Matt Bonner plays where I get to go down on the court 'n everything. Mother knows him/mom on more of a personal basis so I used to go to his basketball camps for free here.

Also NH is home to the first planted potato in the US :wizard:

These posts are great, keep em coming

Mid 30s, living in NYC for the last decade+, laid off from my gig in marketing which has been just awesome.

Celtic fan for about 25 years. Father was not much of a sport fan, so I gravitated towards who was on TV at the time, which was the Celtics. Larry Legend was my guy, was obsessed as a kid. Went through a lot of bad years, which is why I have no issue with a rebuild. Went to the original Garden a few times as a kid. Last game I went to was Larry’s last regular season game in the Garden, dropped a triple double. Appreciate how easy it is to get tickets these days, just imagine there being no internet.

Cherish my Reggie Lewis jersey and hate that I own an authentic Ricky Davis. I love PP, hope he retires in Green, and expect that to happen. Think Rondo is a VERY special player who reminds me of Bird in a lot of ways. We need to build our team around him and appreciate how special he really is.

Outside of being at a game, I have watched about 5 games in the presence of other people over the last decade. Considering I have had league pass since the jump, many people consider that creepy. I need silence and concentration so they players can hear my demands through the TV screen. They never seem to listen which drives me crazy.
RIP texas celtic, 12/10/14 - 12/10/14

In the event anyone thought I was actually 1. an exotic male dancer or, 2. overweight, I was joking. The rest is fairly accurate.

bendyone wrote:U see that earth ship on Grand Designs? Was amazing!!

I am familiar with Michael Reynolds work but I was actually thinking of building with misprinted polyethylene rice bags. Similar concepts, of course. If you are interested in that type of stuff, check out the work Thomas Epfel(sp) is doing with slipform masonry. I will have to google Grande Designs.

I am also a big fan of cob and adobe. I plan on building a rocket mass stove with an adobe plastered sofa/couch providing the thermal mass.

As far as aquaponics, the Aussies seem to be pretty far ahead of everyone else in that regard. Check out Sepp Holzer, if you get a chance. He is an Austrian farmer that is capable of growing citrus at 4000+ ft elevation in the Austrian Alps. He does it all organically, as well.

Human ingenuity fascinates me, really.

I wish more people did. My mother's side wants me to get on the 9-5 treadmill and work as debt slave to make other people rich. My aunts, uncle and cousins in Barbados just want handouts, it seems. What I want is to just live a simple life, enjoy my inventions, research and hobbies and just live as peaceably as I can with as little impact on the environment as possible.

Agreed.

StojkoVrankovic wrote:Went through a lot of bad years, which is why I have no issue with a rebuild.

I am in the same boat. I have seen a prolonged drought that was mostly due to mismanagement. Yes, the franchise had bad luck, as well, but poor, predominately short-sighted, decisions are really what hurt this franchise. I have faith that Ainge will not handcuff the team.

StojkoVrankovic wrote:Cherish my Reggie Lewis jersey

I loved Reggie, of course, but my favorite player from those early 90s teams was Kevin Gamble. I thought, and still do, that he was under-utilized.

I started watching in the 1978-79 season with my 2nd youngest aunt (I have lots of them from both sides of the family.) I still remember Chris Ford's first three pointer.

I never understood the Connor Henry love. I used to spend hours and hours, mimicking the shooting stroke of an elbow, turnaround jumper like Bird, mid-lane rainbows like Parrish and threes like Ainge. Later when Reggie came along, I would mimic his pull up jumper, as well. Those were exciting times. I imagine there is some younger folks who hold the current team in the same reverence as we did those 80s teams.

25, from Kingston, Jamaica. Tough place to grow up. A lot of friends and family in jail or dead. In the US right now - just began my PHD program.

This is my 10th season being a Celtics fan. We don't have a lot of television access in Ja so I didn't get to watch much sports or anything growing up. But yeah. When I first saw basketball I really liked the way the Celtics played.. or something. Haven't changed teams and never plan on it.

I am in my mid 30's, married with 3 boys and have lived in RI and MA. I work for a Juvenile Justice program since I graduated college. I like getting outside and hiking, fishing, boating mostly doing sport activities that involve beer and I have a pretty big obsession with smoking, grilling, or jerking all of the things that Pogue doesn't eat (though I love small farms and local food).

I was raised a Celtic fan in the 80's my family would all get together and watch the games at home or out at a bar it was a big ruckus, I remember dancing on a bar after they won in '84. We still always talk hoops when we get together.

My favorite player was Robert Parish. Loved how the Chief quietly was a terrific offensive and defensive player as well as the team's enforcer not a lot of guys have ever been able to do all of that the way he did.

Learned to really love Paul Pierce's game as he has grown up and really glad he will get to finish his career in Boston.

Just to be clear: I will eat meat that I raise because I know what is going into it. My body doesn't seem to react well to store-bought meat and mass-produced, industrial food stuffs. I am too frugal (nee cheap) to pay an arm and a leg for something labeled "organic" or grass-fed because those are just labels. I will eat the hell out of some curry goat, lamb chops or some brown stew so long as those things are from a local farmer who don't use a cocktail of chemicals, steroids or otherwise allow those animals to graze naturally.

And I agree that Robert Parrish was incredible. Most people nowadays seem to want to poo-poo Chief's accomplishment by looking at his numbers and crying "longevity." My reply is "There are many second options that didn't put up his numbers or provide the impact that he did as a third option." He could have been even more dominant offensively if he had wanted but he was all about the team.

Dispatch cabs all weekend and just kinda sit there the rest of the week, keeping busy in any number of ways. Player of video games, smoker of pawt, pretty much a grade-A meanderer. Got into the C's during the Antoine/Paul early 2000's playoff runs. Eric Williams was the best.
Big fan of eating.

My daughters are 23 & 26. You guys make me feel old. My age is therefore classified, but I can still shoot & I can still throw a football >40 yards.

6 feet 185 & since dietary habits have been posted by others, I have eaten like a diabetic cardiac for many many years even though I do not have heart disease or diabetes. LOL.

Endocrinologist/internist & Professor of Medicine in DC metro area.
In retrospect, I wish I had chosen male exotic dancing like Pogue.

College in MA - when my Celtic fanaticism began.

I have stuck with them through thick & thin.

Special attachments to Red Cowens, Kevin McHale & another guy whose name I forget. Oh yeah, the most underrated, Super Star, future HOFER of the last decade - TRUTH! Hands down, a top 3-4 Celtic
of all time. I only wish KG & Ray had showed up a few years earlier. The Cs & Paul would have had a couple more rings. Damn, if not for the last 7 minutes of Game 7 in June 2010, & KG's injury in Utah in 2/2009, this crew would have won 3 of the last 4 'ships!

I come to Boston every winter to see 2-3 games.
I have personally witnessed 5 of Paul's buzzer beating, mega-clutch gamewinners.

Ex
SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

Sorry for being a Johnny (Most) Come Lately to this thread, only just saw Bendyone's link to it in the D&M thread.

Just turned 33 the other day. I live in Canberra, Australia (the capital of this great land, though a lot of people have never heard of it). Married, two sons, high school science and PE teacher.

Mental Celtics fan, though would be hard pressed to choose which one I love more; basketball or Australian Rules Football. As big a Carlton Blues fan as I am a Celtics fan (Tigers are alright Bendy, as long as you're not a Collingwood, Essendon or Sydney fan, you are alright by me ;) You guys just need a decent key forward and ruckman and you will doing alright). I hate Rugby League with a passion so it sux a little living in Canberra which is a Rugby League town. Played basketball from about age 10 into my mid 20's then started my Australian Rules Football "career" at age 29 and love it. Will keep playing till my body says enough (though it says that to me the day after a game now but I just choose to ignore it).

As far as the Celtics go, I started to watch NBA Action and the NBA game of the week on Channel 10 when I was about 11 and saw Reggie Lewis torch Craig Ehlo for about 40 points in a playoff game against Cleveland and I was hooked on the Green from that point on. Also in one of those games I think my name sake Ed dropped a 20/20 game off the bench though I may have that confused with something else, it was over 20 years ago. A lot of my favourite Celtics of all time are from that time too, Reggie, Dee, The Chief, Kevin Gamble. Unfortunately within three years the Big Three were gone, Reggie passed away and we sucked for over a decade. If anything it made me more of a religious fan though our poor management used to frustrate the hell out of me.

As most of my time as Green-o-phile we haven't been that good, I like some previous posters are not that concerned if we are not very good for a few years and are rebuilding again. I believe if we do that, Danny is smart enough and is enough of a forward thinker to make sure we would be more like OKC than Charlotte. I would just prefer to be building towards being great again rather that limping away from previously being great as we are now.

At least it will be an interesting time. Go the Bean!
