He was a DH with the Yankees because he cant play any other position. Moving to Seattle isn't going to magically give him to ability to actually play a position defensively.

I didn't say that moving to Seattle will give him the magical ability to play a position well defensively. Certain teams wouldn't give a damn whether he can play defense or not, they could give him a shot. Look at Kipnis and the Indians. Kipnis can't play a lick of defense either.

Grant it there's virtually zero chance of him becoming a catcher with the Mariners.

Regardless of who won this deal (for my money it's the Yankees), the point we all need to focus on is that the Blue Jays are never going to make the playoffs.

Ill give the slight edge to the Yanks right now but its very small, I think this is a good trade for both sides M's get what they needed a bat and Yanks get rotation help they needed. If some of the M's young players can put it together they could have a solid lineup.

I don't think there's any question the Yanks won this trade. They gave up a DH prospect for Pineda and Campos. They shore up their pitching, and can easily fill their DH with someone who will provide identical impact.

Sucks for the Jays.

This trade will look better for the Yankees next year when they sign Cole Hamels. Then they will have Pineda on a pre-arbitration deal as their 3rd or 4th starter and there will always be DH types available for cheap. If Montero were a legit catcher then the Yankees probably don't make this trade, but since he is a DH, the risk involved is a lot less. Montero would have to turn into Miguel Cabrera for the Yankees to regret giving him up for a glaring need.

The key with Pineda is whether his numbers will translate to the AL East. His ratios say they should translate, but you never know. A flyball pitcher at Yankee Stadium facing Boston, Tampa, and Toronto 3-4 times each will skew any pitcher's numbers. Once his H/9 normalized a bit in the 2nd half his ERA skyrocketed (5.12) and his ERA away from Safeco was mediocre (4.40). It will be interesting to see if he continues to be a #2 calibre pitcher in the AL East. We have seen what the AL East has done to pitchers with much better track records.

Does this re-open the "Time to trade Bautista and push back our window" discussion at all?

Yanks were looking to get old fast with ARod, Jeter, etc., giving us a better shot (extra WC spot or not).

Now that's just about all gone. Yanks/Red Sox/Angels/Rangers/Tigers...and us and TB trying to...I don't know.

Yankees have been looking to get old for the last 15 years. I think that if we wait for the Yankees to get bad, we'll wait forever.

Those who say the Yankees won this trade are being far too short-sighted

The winner of this trade won't be known for several years, especially since it wasn't a 1 for 1 deal

Having said that, I fully expect Montero to have a better career than Pineda

I agree.

Pineda is unproven. He only has one year in the majors.
