The "How Good is this Team Game?"

Post#1 » by Jersey Generals » Sat Jan 14, 2012 10:05 pm

While we drink and watch basketball or baseball at the bar, my friends and I often play a game. This game consists of us naming random players and then discussing how good that team is afterwards. However, there are some rules: 1) you can't have all-time great teams, as in no more than a few all star players who would be all stars on their own merits, and 2) you have to have a theme, like "players whose name starts with an R."

How does this team look? The theme is, in honor of the Nets' last season in Jersey, all New Jersey players.

PG: Kyrie Irving
SG: Marshon Brooks
SF: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
PF: Troy Murphy
C: Andrew Bynum

*Troy Murphy is there just for the lols.

Interesting. Can we include players in an all-time sense? Because I know Shaq's from Newark.

Personally, I think this team would be exciting to watch, but there's no way to know how Kidd-Gilchrist will translate. I haven't seen him play (I don't watch college or keep track of prospects). People can speculate, but there's been plenty of busts who were "certified stars" entering the league, so even then, you can't really say how good he is.

So based on what I know, I think Murphy sucks, but Irving, Brooks, and Bynum are a very nice, young group of players. I'd say not a playoff team, but a team that can hang surprisingly close to other, better teams.

Why not include David West instead of Troy Murphy?

That's definitely a playoff team as long as Bynum stays healthy.

Troy Murphy really hurts the defense though, Bynum is a plodder and Murphy next to him spells disaster.

Sure can, but that would make the supporting cast significantly worse. If you inserted PRIME Shaq for Bynum, you would have to take a current player as is to decrease the impact of Shaq. So...insert current Mike Bibby for Kyrie Irving. Get it? The better the player you want, you have to create the more likely team. You can't just have five awesome players and call it a day.

Bibby
Brooks
Kidd-Gilchrist
Murphy
Shaq

Would be the new team. Strong team right there. They could go far.

I think he'll translate well. I see a lot of Crash in him. Athletic, crazy amount of heart, a defensive stopper. Offensively, he's unselfish and a good passer, but he's raw and admittedly, I don't think he'll be improving very much than what you see now. However, regardless, he's a winner, which is funny being that Coach Cal usually recruits losers like John Wall, Terrence Jones, and DeMarcus Cousins to Kentucky.

So based on what I know, I think Murphy sucks, but Irving, Brooks, and Bynum are a very nice, young group of players. I'd say not a playoff team, but a team that can hang surprisingly close to other, better teams.

I think that's a playoff team. A 4-6 seed, personally. Irving is unreal, Bynum is great when he wants to be, Marshon can be dynamic in that lineup, Kidd-Gilchrist would be super in his role, and then there's Troy Murphy.

Hence the "lols".
