OT: Rangers ink Darvish: 6 years, $60M

Starting pitcher Yu Darvish will sign with the Texas Rangers before the 5 p.m. ET deadline, sources have told CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman. The deal is likely to be for six years, Heyman has also learned. The Rangers paid a reported $51.7 million simply for the right to negotiate with Darvish.

Darvish, a 25-year-old right-hander, has been the ace of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters for five years. In those five seasons, Darvish is 76-28 with a sparkling 1.72 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He's struck out 9.5 batters per nine innings and walked just 1.9 per nine. He's also thrown 50 complete games and 15 shutouts. In 2011, Darvish went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 276 strikeouts in 232 innings with 10 complete games and six shutouts.

If Darvish does indeed sign with the Rangers, the entire posting fee will be sent from the Rangers to the Fighters as compensation.

I can update when the official number is known.

Good for the Rangers, and their fans. Great commitment to winning by their ownership. Next up, Prince.

Love being a Jays fan.

I read some article where it practically said prince fielder hasn't signed yet because he wants to sign with the rangers, but the rangers have been focused on getting yu darvish signed.

People thought he would sign with the Rangers at the beginning of free agency so it would make sense if that is what he is waiting for.

I will still take being a Jays fan and live with the two titles won in my lifetime over being a Rangers fan who lost the Series this year in heart-breaking fashion.

When you say "people" who do you mean? I've always thought it was going to be the Nationals. Really they had nothing to lose by waiting. If Darvish did not sign, then there would be a better chance at a bidding war.

Actually, Texas getting both Darvish and Fielder would be good for our playoff chances.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Source: Yu Darvish deal is for six years and $60 million. Bonuses can add up to $10 million.

You know what would be even better for our playoff chances?...having management show some semblance of a desire to finish anything above .500%.

Cheaper than I expected. It's not much more than Dice-K got, for a better pitcher. I'm depressed. It shoulda been us.

This is an incredible amount of money spent for a pitcher who hasn't proven a damn thing against real competition. I'm not too worried about it.

I still don't really understand why the Rangers just didn't keep the proven CJ Wilson for much less.

Wilson would've come cheaper and would be a better bet to do good job even if hes on the wrong side of 30. Rangers are actually worse off than last year unless they are expecting another .900+ OPS season from Napoli.

We at least know CJ Wilson can pitch very successfully in that stadium against MLB competition. We can't say the same for Yu Darvish. I'd be surprised if he did as well as Wilson did there for the past two years.

Yeah, you really have to assume they have a concrete plan for foreign advertising to inject extra money that offsets a bunch of the cost, 'cause 110-120 over 6 is crazy money if you have to factor it all in against Darvish.
