i mean, we saw him make a couple of running hooks against phoenix, he probably could have a serviceable post game if he really tried . . .

Thinking about this now, if Amare has back problems it makes it hard to learn how to post up while he has that handicap. Anybody whose experienced back problems or even serious stiffness knows how much it affects mobility.

Why is this relevant to a skill that probably compensates for less mobility? At least a couple of things.

One is he seems reluctant to body up any more than he has to and backing guys down may feel difficult with a bad back.

Second is torso movement. We already see he is kind of robotic right now which means he is all thighs and arms, but if you don't have torsion and flex in your core you lose most of your athletic potential. It shows in that he really only dunks now when he has a straight line, but rarely now on spin moves.

When he goes up its all push from the feet and without any real snap from his midsection which is what you see with great dunkers. He simply cannot adjust his body in mid-movement, he's wooden.

Now if he wants to learn to back guys down, he is still going to have spin left or right or step back & turn to pop. This is not complex movements or it shouldn't be for him, but something is really off and I think its his back or lack of flexibility making everything he does tight and contorted.

I may be overstating this, but I'm just thinking out loud here. It is hard to learn a new way of playing when your mid-section is unable to move and react with the rest of your body and that's how he looks to me.

If there is any shred of truth to this theory, it could be a small silver lining if he could get healthier and then evolve his game. If he just won't learn, that is a worse problem that may not be fixable.

This is a good point. He does seem to have lost some mobility/flexibility. "Wooden" is an excellent description.

As for a post-up game, I didn't expect him to add that in his 10th year in the league anyway.

So true. It's unbelievable how often he does this.

He's blocked one shot this month and that was last game, and his jumper is completely broken.

The defense aspect I have truly given up the concept that he could be a serviceable defender.

When Amar'e talks he only talks about the offense being the key for everything else.

Once he understands it's actually the other way around, then I'll know he's making progress.

i tend to agree with all this. i also don't buy into him being injured. he jumps and dunks just fine.

Would you want to guard that guy as he drives the lane? Try anticipating which direction he's going. I dare you.

Seriously tho, he can't be worse than Toney Douglas.

i disagree with the injury theory. i don't think the back has anything to do with his play right now. he's had almost 7 months of rest for it. he has the best trainers in the world, and he ADDED 20 LBS OF MUSCLE IN THE OFFSEASON! you don't work out and put on weight like that without being 100% physically. besides, it was only a muscle issue, it's not like he has a herniated disc. even if he did, 7 months is plenty of time for recovery.

the reason i think he is struggling is all mental. he is thinking too much out there. he's thinking about where to be on offense and how to make the spacing work. on defense, idk what he's thinking  ... he's never known how to play it so his feet don't move anyway. on top of that, he has to think about rotations in the new system ... idk, he's hopeless on D.

his jumper is not broken, it's just not going in. not like he completely misses the rim or airballs every game. they just have to keep at it, and shoot with consistency with the same release. anyone who changes up their release knows how hard it is, just ask fields. even myself, i changed from a regular release to trying a higher arc release and i barely have any control over it. the muscles actually does have a factor in jumpshots too. my 2 cents

i agree. when you have a back issue it's close to impossible to lift heavy weights. you use your back to stabilize almost every movement.

This moron put on 20 lbs of muscle and worked on dribbling the ball. The results of this? A jumper that is too strong on every attempt hitting back-rim and those wonderful plays where we see him dribbling with his left hand right into the baseline.

I guarantee you that the opposition defensive strategy against this buffoon is let him do what he wants to do. He wants to dribble, go ahead, dribble right into the baseline dumb-ass. Amar'e was better last year when all he could do was dunk or shoot. He has to be shooting less than 20% on his mid-range jumper, nice job putting on weight over the summer. Now you look like Dwight Howard when he attempts a jump-shot.

This is what happens when you have a lockout and a player's off-season workout is designed for a beach-body instead of basketball effectiveness. I'm sure Ciara loves your muscles, but no one on your team does. Lose the weight, stop dribbling, and start making your damn jump-shots.

Amare telling teammates to start using their brain when he doesn't use it also.
What an idiot.

That's like Melo telling teammates to shoot a little less

All I can say is when I played against Boris in the Borscht League they used boxing referees to officiate the games. They would always say right before the opening jump ball, "I want clean game. Protect your eyes and nuts at all times."

Anything is possible, but to me the injury thing is the most probable. And he could have injured himself at the end of his muscle bulk program, you just don't know. I guess we'll find out in the not so distant future..... this shytty play can't go on for too long I hope.

If amare has a bad back, then someone better call LJ for help.

Not good.

I dont mind that he worked on his handle, not sure why someone would criticize him for that.

He does need to learn a post game, but I think that is obvious. Even if he learns a baby hook or a turn around...this would help him and the entire team. He would be more productive when there is no PG out there if he had a post game and could create his own shot...without running people over 3 times a game.

Finally had a chance to watch the video, talk about taking things out of context & blowing them up.

He's talking about what one has to do in their situation given the shortened season & shortened practice times & back-to-backs, most specifically the fewer practices. "You gotta be come students, using your brain & getting your IQ involved"... simple as.

everyone's got to get their head out of there ass and play like a team. I'm sick and tired of tuning in to their abortions on live television.

I doubt Amare's hurt in any way. It's just a different system.

Last year, he only scored in 3 ways:
-transition jumper/dunk
-pick-and-roll/pick-and-pop
-some kind of modified 1-4 isolation play with him at the top of the key and the other 4 guys at the three point line to give him unlimited room to try and beat slower big guys off the dribble (and it's not like he was that great at this either, he messed this up a lot last year too, he was just forcefed so much that he put up numbers)

And almost all of that is gone this year. Chandler roams the paint, Melo roams the paint...So how else is Amare gonna score? Nobody can run the pick-and-roll. We're DEAD LAST in points scored per pick-and-roll ran. That means there's nobody worse at running the pick-and-roll than us. It's so bad that we're better off not running it. So that leaves transition buckets. That's gone too since we don't run. So....how else is Amare gonna score? He brings nothing else to the table so if he's not scoring, he's Jared Jeffries.
