True, a hell alot of prospects with talents come into the league with skinny frame but eventually build their muscles frame in year 2 or 3.

Laowai wrote:Would love Davis and agree that his body isn't big enough to be a PF!
But again start him at SF he is athletic enough to guard any SF even if its put backs and drives so what.
Bargs could be a point forward with Davis 6ft10, Val 7ft and Bargs7 ft all mobile for there position.
Open up opportunities for DeMar to score.

If E. Davis not traded then a second front court of JJ, Amir and E Davis would be strong.

Again, why start Davis at the 3? It will just limit and slow down his skill development. He's at his best when he plays the 4.

Anyone likening Davis to Garnett didn't watch Garnett in HS or early in his career. Garnett was an elite passer for a big man (HS scouting reports included things like "better passing ability than Kukoc"). He could play PG and handle the ball like a guard. He also had a terrific midrange jumper. Davis hasn't shown any of that yet. He might develop the jumper and some of the handle but passing is an innate skill and Davis is not a passer at Garnett's level.

As for the Biyombo thing, he's what - 15 games into a career with no training camp, summer league, or preseason and in his last game he played against D12 and went 5-5 for 11 points, 10 boards and 4 blocks. He has legit centre muscle and is already moving up in his teams rotation. Still expecting big things from him but like Davis hes a 3-5 year project.

Davis looked like a pretty good passer in HS too, not to mention he stroked 3s, handled the ball and was a guard before the had size .... Either alot of big men are doing this in highschool and just not being able to get thier game off against better competition, or its a combination of needing to grow into his body/being on a stacked team/not being a finished product... Some people here seem to think his ceiling is 13-14ppg, that would surprise me about as much as if he got to over 25ppg, if scouts didn't think the guy had a good shot at being a 2 way player i don't think he would be the front runner. Some say play him at SF.... You want the kid to learn his position... but really do we know for sure hes best suited as a 4? Defensivly yes, you want him to be there to block shots right. However i kinda feel like we are never going to know if he could have been a wing, i mean was he any good before his growth spurt? Why do we all assume just casue he got tall he can't play anymore? Or was he just another guy when he was short? 1average guard + 8 inches = elite big man prospect?

my whole point regarding roy williams and barnes is that I think it is unfair and wrong to assume that his offense is being hindered by the system and that he will show new skills in the nba that he doesn't display in college.

I think its a mistake people have made when discussing unc/duke players over the past decade and the results are always the same IMO.

One thing I've noticed about Barnes is that he's doing a much better job of keeping his dribble low. Previously, he was too upright on his drives and was getting stripped too often.

If he tests the waters and his hometown team makes him a promise do you still think he's going back to school? I doubt it.

we have to have that pick late in the first to make the promise. we certainly aren't drafting him with our first pick.

Another thing with Barnes is that he's doing an excellent job of keeping the ball away from his defender. When he turns the corner off that screen or simply puts the ball down on the floor one-on-one, you'll notice how he places his body between the defender and the ball preventing it from getting poked. It's small things like these that makes Barnes a smart ball handler. He's dribbling towards the side of his body oppose to the front where the ball is all exposed like Quincy Miller where there's a higher chance of the defender picking your pocket.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" - Jesus Shuttlesworth

Garnett is also a freak of nature. In his prime he may have been skinny, but he was very strong despite his wiry frame. I'm not sure if there are many 7 footers in the world who could be as skinny as KG and still tough.

Don't get me wrong though, I love Davis. I think he'll be a very good player - he's a lot more skilled than he gets credit for and he's a hard worker. I think he'll have a tough first couple of years in the league but could turn into an elite player.

Garnett was as strong as any kid his size, he was a freak of nature because at the time there was never someone his size with the athletic ability and skill level

Davis 1/11 at half, 1/3 FTs, 6 Rebs 1 Blk. Looked better than that but less than great. MKG looked good, fast/strong with the ball again but foul trouble. 8/3.

Everyone knows what made KG great was his fire and intensity, no matter how much skill he had. We've seen guys come and go with GOAT skillsets and turn out to be role players or mediocre stars.

Davis invisible on the offensive end. He just has no offensive game at this point. His defense is otherworldly at times but his offense is so far behind that any team taking him in the top 2 better have a good offensive team around him and a great deal of patience.

It's not about him showing new skills - he's shown pretty much every skill you could ask of a wing player. It's about his numbers and the way he gets them. He's shown dribble-drive skill but many will say he's mostly a jump shooter, which is where his looks will come primarily in the UNC offense.

I think people do fall into the trap of projecting players too much, but it's certainly not limited to UNC/duke guys, and scouts fall into the opposite trap as well. Look at lawson, who was too short (7th PG taken in his draft but probably the best all around NBA player of the group now) or Hansbrough (many were calling him a Madsen-type NBA player but he's been a solid rotation guy and was a very good starter for a stretch last year).

The key is to evaluate Skills, Production, and Potential and not get too swayed by any one of the 3. Potential is the sexiest of the 3 but Skills is the most important. A perfect example is Demar - a guy with great potential but almost no skills coming out of college. It's hard to develop skills in the NBA. Barnes has a world of skills - Plus defender, plus shooter, plus IQ, solid handle, plus size, solid athleticism, plus clutch guy. He also has very good production - only 26 minutes per game but 17/5/1 on very good percentages. And he was the highest regarded high schooler in a long time so there's definitely potential.

Harrison Barnes is still my preferred choice. Seems like the most NBA ready and a low risk, high reward prospect.
