Jays, Morrow close to 3 yr extension

ShiDavidi Shi Davidi
Source: Blue Jays and Morrow nearing $20m, three-year extension, with $10m buyout. Announcement could come Tuesd

So if he sucks next year, Jays cut Rogers' losses? An odd buyout.

Nice! It also looks like we're trying to work out an extension with Casey Jannsen too if I'm not mistaken.

It's not a suckage buyout, in all likelihood; it's high enough that the risk/reward would always favour keeping him (guessing that the final two seasons are around $16m, so it'd be a $3m/year risk), perhaps in a reliever's role. It's an "his arm fell off and there's really no chance of him producing anything worthwhile" buyout.

At these #'s, this is a really good deal for the Jays.

Well that's sort of a suckage buyout, because if he's the same hot-and-cold guy we saw last year I doubt that's bad enough to cut him out of his last two seasons. We'd still be drolling over those days when he has that early innings mojo going.

Anyhow, one less wrinkle to iron out, so that's good.

EDIT - Shi corrects his earlier tweet

Very different spin
Typo, apologies. Source: Jays, Morrow nearing $20m, three-year extension, with $10m option or $1m buyout. Announcement could come Tuesday.

This makes a whole lot more sense. He gets two guaranteed, and either $1 million (to walk) or $10 million based on his next two seasons.

Morrow has two arbitration years left anyway (2012 and 2013) so it is really just buying out one of his free agent years. Regardless it is a good figure that provides cost certainty for the next three years. If Morrow pans out, then it saves the Jays a bit of coin in 2013 and 2014, best case.

Edit: So it is a three year deal + one option year? That's a bit better than 2+1.

its a 10 million dollar option (or a 1 million dollar buyout). - according to new davidi tweet.
So this deal could be 4 years/30 million or 3 years/21 million

Can't say, I guess we'll need Shi to correct his tweet again.

Wilnerness590 Mike Wilner
CONFIRMED - #Bluejays sign Brandon Morrow to 3 year deal worth $20 million. Announcement likely tomorrow. #jays @2Morrow23

So it looks like its 3/21 and then a 10 mil club option. My guess would be 5+7+8 for the yearly breakdown.

It's 3 years, 20 million with an option for 2015 (4th year) at $10 million with a $1 million buyout.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/b ... um=twitter

So we can buy out up to 2 years of free agency. It's a great deal for us since we'll get him for all his best years before he starts to decline. He's under team control until he's 31 turning 32.

I really like it.

3+1 is a good deal. Even if Morrow flops it is not a huge commitment. If he finally puts it together it is a steal. Worthwhile gamble.

Yeah, great deal given his performance in advanced metrics. It's even tolerable if he ends up in the 'pen.

Great deal. Hopefully, Morrow can put it all together next year.

AA has proven adept at signing players to reasonable extensions. Lind is his worst thus far, and even that isn't that bad and has plenty of options to work with.

Good to have Morrow in the fold for three more years. He's one of the team's many wildcards that could really put us over the top.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Should be a good deal even if he never learns how to pitch out of the stretch and gets his FIP in line with his ERA. Though I really hope they make some adjustments there.

I'll go against the grain here and say it's not that great of a deal. Baseball is completely out of whack when we think $20 million for an average starter is a good deal. Morrow my finally prove me wrong and have a great season, but I have zero confidence he'll put it all together consistently enough for him to be a truly reliable part of this rotation.

It's been out of whack for years...but we all know that $7M (or so) per season for an average starter is peanuts. Gil Meche got $11M a year for 5 years...that was years ago...and no one thought he was anything great even then.

it's a pretty good deal, not sure what the issue is. it's not 20 million, it's less than 7 mil per year... 20 million over 3 years, plus the 4th year option / buyout
