Time to give some props to coach Kevin McSuccess

Post#1 » by Guy986 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 4:22 am

I was extremely skeptical of the Kevin Mchale hire. I thought he was hired by Morey to be commander in chief of the Tank brigade. As someone who has never coached a full season before in any level of competition, i thought he was hired to be a cheerleader, a figurehead.

We knew coming into the season that the Martin/Budinger starting wing rotation was a disaster defensively. Chandler parsons turned out to be a great utility guy in the starting lineup next to Martin with his hustle, length and basketball IQ. Inserting a rookie 2nd round pick 8th game into the season is something Rick Adelman would NEVER EVER EVER do.

One of Adelman's biggest weaknesses was his loyalty to aging veterans. Dreamshook said it best
DreamShook34 wrote:McHale has no loyalties; probably the only thing he has over Rick Adelman as a coach. Mchale will bench you if you aren't preforming. Adelman will ride under preforming players to defeat.

Chase Budinger went from starting to being out of the rotation. Terrence Williams went from being the 6th man to DNP. Jordan Hill went from starting and someone Mchale gushed about all summer long to being our 4th/5th big.

Whether we make the playoffs or not, he's made some brilliant moves. He may never be a great X and O coach but i'm impressed by how decisive, how willing he is to shuffle the roster in hope of finding a working combination.

I think some of it is because the schedule has soften up. The Rockets will need to win all the games they can because March is going to get hard once again. All game up to Feb 6 easy and could all be wins. But I do like his lack of loyalty and playing the hot hand. Also sitting Martin the 4th is maybe enough to get him coach of the year

After that game where Kevin Martin exploded for 27 points in the first half and coach kept going to him in the 2nd half for the hot hand only to result in empty possessions time after time, Mchale has really limited Pumpfake's minutes in the 4th quarter afterward.

He's a fast learner. He understood that he can play Martin extensive minutes in the first 3 quarters, but not so much in the 4th. I love that Lowry/Dragic/Lee lineup he employ in the 4th quarter.

But a seven winning streak is a 7 game winning streak so I shall give him props

Dont forget the benching of scola and today sitting Dalembert... he sees that Patterson is solid defensively.

Im used to have to b*tch and complain a whole season bout rotations or players... with McHale no need.

I don't think this run is sustainable or that this winning streak proves that McHale is a good coach, but you're certainly right about McHale not being afraid to mix up the rotation and try out new lineup combinations, which is good and refreshing to see.

I can't comment on the X's and O's, as I've only been able to catch a few games this season, but it didn't look too impressive earlier in the year, though you can't really blame McHale on that one either, having very little time to implement an offense, while still trying to figure out the rotation and having to work in Dalembert and Patterson.

We'll see. I like what I've seen/heard so far and I was fine with the Rockets going with McHale, but it's too early for me to make my mind up.

Also, while having a good coach is obviously vital, this is still a players league, so this season's success, to me, still hinges on Morey/Les choosing a direction, because this team, as is, is still going nowhere.

He's a great motivational coach and player coach.. And yes he has made good sub decisions, Especially on Parsons.. although Parsons look more nba ready than most draft picks. Props to Morey /Les for getting Dalembert and getting Parsons in the 38th pick.

Hopefully it continues.

i don't like Adelman

This is basically how I feel and I agree with him not being afraid to sit players who aren't playing well. Gregg Popovich does the same thing and he's one of the greatest to ever do it

He's doing well. I just caught up on a bunch of games and I'm really impressed. This is a high IQ basketball team with good depth. Dalembert and Parsons have been pleasant surprises as well.

For a guy who was expected to be Lawrence Frank, I'm highly impressed and satisfied. Keep up the good work.
