Nine-year, $214 million deal for an overweight DH? This is a disaster and will come back to haunt Detroit in a few years...

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=A ... rs-fielder

NEW YORK (AP)—A person familiar with the negotiations says Prince Fielder and the Detroit Tigers are nearing agreement on a nine-year contract worth about $200 million.

CBS first reported the terms of the deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because talks are ongoing. The person says “there are still some things that need to be worked out.”

Detroit, coming off an AL championship series loss to Texas, fills a void left by the knee injury to slugger Victor Martinez.

eh, isn't Fielder an upgrade over Martinez? Whats with this 'lessen the burden of losing Martinez' stuff in here? As if Fielder is just some stop gap until Martinez returns.

Fielder would've been an upgrade if they traded for each other, but they get to have both starting next year.

Tigers also have two top prospects (Jacob Turner, Nick Castellanos) that are close to being ready. This team is going to be scary for the next 5 years.

This was their reaction to losing Martinez? He was out for the year, not the rest of his career.

The story is that Mike Ilitch (the owner) REALLY wants a championship in the next few years. The two prospects have really no where to play in Detroit and the Tigers want another starting pitcher and a possible upgrade in the outfield.

I don't believe this was solely done because of V-Mart's injury. Tigers had alot of injured players (Magglio, Guillen, Betemit, Young, Boesch, etc) last year, including the playoffs against the Rangers, and it limited them offensively. Getting Fielder should help that greatly. Despite the fat jokes, Fielder is a durable player that doesn't miss time and plays well consistently.

As for the money, $23.8 million is alot of money. However, the Tigers were paying Magglio Ordonez/Carlos Guillen over $22.9 million last year for very limited playing time (120 games, 424 ABs- combined) and production (8 HR, 45 RBIs- combined). Add in the insurance money from V-Marts injury and the Tigers are actually coming out ahead this year for Fielder who should greatly outproduce those numbers. :D

Next season, the Tigers will have to figure out where to put Miggy, but that is a very good problem to have when you have three hitters like Fielder, Cabrera and Martinez in the middle of your lineup. 8-)

That's a crap ton of money for a overweight DH, this deal is going to look really bad in a couple years.

I'm pretty sure the Fielder deals going to look a lot worse. I have a feeling now that he's gotten paid he's going to get a lot fatter.

You do realize that Pujols will be getting paid for the next 20 years per his contract, right? As for all the fat jokes about Fielder, he missed less games over the last six years than any other player in MLB. But hey, you gotta find something to hate about it, might as well hate the obvious.

I do. But i'm positive the Angels are going to get more productive years out of Pujols than the Tigers are going to get out of Fielder.
