Seems like we still ain't going to be sniffing the playoffs in a long time thanks to Pujols and Fielder coming to the AL.
Stud potential AL wild card teams (assuming Tigers win Central):
Red Sox
Rays
Yankees
Angels
Rangers
Only 5 playoff spots... We have to do better than two teams on this list...

Re: So..you thought a 2nd Wildcard would help the Jays great
The only hope we have is when the old rearguard in New York and Boston starts to massively decline. It's going to be at least 3-4 years before that becomes a possibility (and that's assuming the Sox and Yankees can't get better through the draft or free agency). Get used to 7th-9th place baseball for the foreseeable future and pray that we catch some breaks and have a Tampa style run in a few years.

were you one of the many projecting 71 wins for the Jays last year? 88 to 90 wins still gets the Wild Card. The Yankees, Rays and BoSox are in our division and we're used to playing them. Have they improved this offseason vs. last year? Sub Fielder in for Martinez - more strikeouts, bigger bat, lesser avg. Essentially Detroit's the same team. Rangers lose CJ, add Darvish - essentially the same team. The only team I see improving tremendously are the Angels so far.
Have the Jays done enough retooling in the offseason for +10 wins. Remains to be seen doesn't it, but our bullpen was atrocious last year.

We don't have the starting pitching or power to seriously contend late into the year. I'm envisioning a good start from the team, but around late June or early July they'll fall off the pace. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see how they'll come 2nd in the AL East this season.

Don't see how the AL Central favorites becoming better changes the Jays' already slim WC chances in 2012. They're still going to have to beat the same teams to make the playoffs.

It doesn't, but I think some people were still holding on to that faint hope that we'd somehow sign Fielder and instantly make us a contender. Relying on internal development doesn't really sell tickets or give fans hope, so now that this saga is finally over we can finally come to terms with the fact we're not good enough for the playoffs for the 20th straight year.

Or maybe they begin a Tampa Bay-like run in 2012. Unlikely, sure, but there's no point in writing off a season before its begun with all the talent on the roster.
That's what we're banking on at this point, though, going forward. If Rogers isn't going to spend like the Yankees/Red Sox/Rangers/Angels/Tigers (and it's getting clear they won't being the financially driven cheapskates they are), we're going to have to try to follow in the Rays' footsteps.

It's possible, but with those Rays teams they always had great pitching and lots of it. This team has one pitcher they can consistently rely on.

They didn't always have great pitching. They developed it. That's the plan here.

time to trade the farm for a bat and an arm...why couldn't we trade d'arnaud for Pineda?

Yep the trade Market is almost at bad as the FA market right now, just awful. I would expect some prospects to be moved mid season for a young impact bat, and then maybe a run a Hamels? that would be a nice rotation.

guess you don't value Victor Martinez all that much, because they lost him and gained Fielder. What's the diff?

Re: So you thought a 2nd Wildcard would help the Jays?
I reply no to the OP's thread title. I have always maintained an extra playoff spot is not something that will help the Jays. Sure their odds go up a tiny bit, but all that really happens is one more team in the league spends bigtime to get that position. Could be the Tigers for instance. Teams that want to play moneysavingball have to hope for luck.

So 1 wildcard gives the Jays a better shot?
Let's use some logic, folks.
Mathematically, the Jays have a better shot. Realistically, they're not there yet...but as they get better, there are more playoff spots available for them to strive for.

No you're wrong. Rogers and AA won't spend money and their shallow pockets are breaking the laws of the universe. 1 + 1 = Bautista's OPS now. With physics in play, Morrow's FB now travels 2.75mph and his CB is 154mph, but he has to throw it into LF to get it over the plate.
And Moreno bought distance. He now controls how far away things are. When his players are up the OF walls are 50 feet away, but when the opponents are up their 500 ft away. Too bad we don't have an ownership willing to pony up to break the laws of nature.

It clearly cannot hurt us.....
Oh no! An extra playoff spot is available.
