Raptors Game Full of Coaching Errors

Post#1 » by retiredcoach » Thu Jan 26, 2012 6:21 am

I was very disappointed in Corbin's bench coaching in this game. He made a lot of mistakes including poor use of substitutions, making bad lineup decisions, using plays in key situations that were already being defended very well, and not reacting to momentum shifts.

Corbin made a lot of head coach rookie mistakes. Unfortunately the results of those mistakes may extend beyond this game into next week. I hope not. But the potential is there.

Overall I think Corbin has done a good job with the Jazz. Bench coaching is only one element of being a head coach.

Very, very few coaches contribute much to wins or losses from the bench, but this one bit Corbin. He's had one other major coaching lapse this year that in my opinion caused a loss, but at least that one was debatable. I don't think the Raptors game was.

I'm sure many fans will disagree, but that's my take.

I'm usually very forgiving when it comes to coaching mistakes, but I agree 100%.

Eh. I didn't have a lot of problems with the coaching. I probably would have tried a little more Miles and Burks against the zone, and he ran with the 2nd unit a little too long in the 2nd quarter, but, overall I didn't think he cost us the game.

Lots of missed free throws. That's where I'd point the finger.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

I think he did a great job of coaching the Raptors to a victory. Way to finally get a good performance out Harris JUST TO BENCH HIM?!!!!! WTF?!!!

Yeah. IMO there were 2 big, BIG mistakes as player minutes go. First, he played Raja Bell almost 40 minutes. That's 40 minutes with an old player that gives you very little return. He gave Burks 4 minutes. Than just can't happen. Also, CJ is ballin', and he gets yanked in favor of, yes, Bell. Second, Favors wasn't played properly in the 4th. In that situation, you could have gone with Evans, CJ or Howard.

Our biggest problem was that zone late in the game. How do you beat it? With good shooters and ballhandlers. Only Hayward could be thought of as a good shooter (and was way off last night) and only Harris and Hayward could "handle" the ball. That ain't gonna cut it vs a zone. It's amazing with the personel available on our bench, Ty would be so limited in that 4th qtr (especially late) because it's the m****f**** starting lineup. I mean, really? Managing tight games is something Ty has to learn, and it's been now a recurring theme for 3 close home losses, that Ty has basically choked the game away. I just hope he learns and we can keep improving as a team. Oh and BTW, y'all Big Al haters, that's what happens when you "remove him" from the team. You lose to the m***f**** Raptors on your homecourt.

The key mistake was not adjusting his lineup to Klieza at PF. Favors was loss defensively guarding him away from the basket. Favors was also loss on offense. Favors was tired playing much more than his normal minutes. SImply if Favors was benched late in the 4th qtr and/or OT for either Burks/CJ/Howard the Jazz win the game. Corbin needed to go small and he failed to do so.

I am still happy he is the Jazz coach bc he has done a GREAT job getting young guys to play defense as well as have them play together. Corbin is a very good coach and I think he will be a great coach in time, but he blew this one.
Top 4 seed in the West!!! Guaranteed!!!

We do have a rookie head coach, I think it's a bit much to expect him to do well every game. What's going to be really interesting is when we start hitting all these teams a second and third time and they have good scouting on us....if we can still win when that happens it'd be amazing for us.
