2012-13 Season expectations

Post#1 » by Eoghan » Mon Jan 30, 2012 2:22 am

Looking ahead to next year, what can we expect? Full on tank mode again? Tank-lite? Try and compete? Make a splash in free agency? It doesn't seem like this draft has any franchise saviors per se so I'm guessing the rebuild effort will continue into next year, I just wonder how much of a rebuild it will be or when the end is near.

That if all new rookies don't get 35 minutes a game the head coach should be sacked, hung, drawn and quartered.

If I had to guess I would say 25 wins next season, 32-35 the season after that, and then we finally make the big jump. This team is so terrible it will take a couple drafts, and the right draft picks to get everything right. Took the Thunder the same amount of time.

We already got our Westbrook, now we just need our Durant and Harden, so I'd say things will not look good for next year and the next still.

When talking about the next season, I'm currently more interested in which players the front office considers as keepers. Because this (hopefully) is the start of Kemba's era in which we will finally have a good NBA team.

It's obvious that:
Hendo, Bismack and Kemba are our franchise centerpieces... Ain't going nowhere.

Maggette, Gana, Carroll (the last two have player options) are hard to get rid of... they'll be here for the next year... T2 might be included in a Diaw/DJ trade, so we can't be sure about him.

We won't be able to keep Diaw (shouldn't), DJ (won't be able to + we have Kemba).. Mexicat's contract expires, he's a great guy, yet there are better power forwards around (he may still be a great 11th/12th guy to have in the locker room)... who the **** needs Cory Higgins!?

The situations with these guys are pretty much definite... that leaves us with

Kemba
Hendo/Carroll
Maggs
Tyrus (or some other player with lengthy contract)
Bismack/Gana

But how about these four? UPS, Mullens, White, Williams. Who do you want to see in the long run for a playoffs team?

UPS strikes me as a possibly great role player and he seems to like playing in Charlotte. I think he's a keeper. Contract expires this summer.

Mully... He's a great scorer to have for this tanking season, BUT I can't decide if I want him on this team. Biz should be our starting center and I don't know if we'll be able to keep him in the summer of 2013 when other teams will offer him ridiculous contracts. Maybe we should try hoaxing somebody in a trade, since there aren't plenty of centers around, especially ones who can shoot like Byron. I think we could get a good deal for somebody more valuable. Like a good back-up PG.

DJ White... Qualifying offer coming up this summer.... Just like Mullens - a great shooter, mediocre at everything else and doesn't seem to be as keen on learning as Byron (it sure would be sad to see him leave, if that would happen, just because of this reason)... Would we get him for an appropriate contract, considering that he might be our back-up power forward in time, with all those tempting rookie forwards coming up this summer in the draft? I don't think that he's a keeper.

Reggie Williams. We haven't seen him playing as a Cat yet, however I like his game. With Maggs gone for the 2014 season, will we try to keep him for some more years (he has a 5mil, 2 year contract)? I need to see what he can do on defense...

AND we should have an exciting rookie for the next season (we'll see what we get with the 2nd round pick as well)... I don't have the time to watch NCAA, so I don't know much about Anthony Davis, Drummond and Sullinger, but it seems to be that it is likely that we end up with a power forward...

Kemba/2012 2nd Rounder PG
Hendo/Carroll
Maggs/Williams/UPS
Tyrus (or some other player with lengthy contract)/2012 Top3 Draft Pick
Bismack/Mully/Gana

Could this be our roster for the next season? Who do we keep from the uncertain category? Do we try to find a trade for Boris and DJ or do we let them go through free agency? What do we do with T2? Discuss....

(I'm sure I made some horrible management decisions or misinterpreted some contract situations, so correct me if I'm terribly wrong somewhere... I'm not used to doing all this GM talk... It's actually funny how much some of you Americans (no offense) on RealGM talk all the time about trades/contracts... almost every team has this 50 page thread full of ideas by simply average sports fans who seem to have more bright ideas than some of the coaches and GM's (they themselves think that it's the case as well )... so yes, I know more about the game itself, than the business side of it)

this thread is a tad early isnt it? I mean at the beginning of last year we were hoping for another playoffs run, and now we are in the fight for the #1 pick.....

There is no real way to know yet. There are to many questions yet to be answered. Will we trade DJ and Boris? Where will we be drafting? How many picks will we have? Who will we pick? Will any free agents want to come here? Until we get those questions answered there's no way to know.

I bet Cho tries damn hard to sign Nicolas Batum. He's always spoke highly of the Frenchman.

"When Batum becomes a restricted free agent, we'll look at the other 29 teams before we talk to the Blazers," Batum's agent Bouna Ndiaye told CSNNW.com. "The Blazers had their chance."

This. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with him either because we'll have the money other teams won't, especially if we find a way to deal Tyrus Thomas.

He's not a star but he's a good piece to go forward with.

It sounds good but I'm not so sure, what if we plan on drafting Barnes or MKG?

Anthony Davis,

Never get your heart set on drafting a particular player. No one knows until draft night what these teams are gonna do.

Bet your last two dollars on it. Nic was the player Mike was targeting when he made the Gerald Wallace trade. I just doubt that we will want to pay whatever he is asking.

I know that all too well and I'd actually prefer Davis but we already have a glut at the 4 then we'd possibly have one at the 3 as well.

Yeah, but that glut could clear out quickly if Diaw is traded, and we don't keep White. Not to mention none of our current fours have the off the charts potential that Davis has. Threes are a dime a dozen. 2013 we will have plenty of cap room to sign or trade for one if we don't draft one.

Don't be silly, this is the Bobcats where Kemba is Isiah Thomas, BB is Dwight, Barnes is going to be the next Larry Bird not KD. Sheesh
