I would agree that many times people get overly optimistic about possible future improvement. But i think it is safe to say that some improvement isn't unusual during a players first few years.
For example last season Al Horford shot 53% from 16-23 feet on 4.8 attempts per game. As a rookie he shot 35% from that range. Al Harrington was no threat from 3 until his 8th season.
Good find on Horford. It sucks when people start saying someone in their early 20s is never going to get much better at something (like shooting) regardless of how hard they work at it. I don't expect either Veseley or Wall to become great shooters (I hope I'm wrong), but I can easily see both of them being MUCH better shooters in 2-3 years than they are today.

Karl Malone couldn't shoot at all when he came into the league. He shot 48% from the line as a rookie, 60% his second season. He ended up being a career 74% shooter from the line.
Unfortunately Wall and Ves would have to improve tremedously to just be average jump shooters. There are plenty of examples of guys who hardly improved their shot at all over their careers.

I still think Wall will improve and become a very good, if not dominant, scoring point guard in the NBA. I am very pleased, overall with what I have seen from Ves in a short period of time. He seems to have a good BBall IQ and a knack for the flow of the game. I think he will become an effective player, a starting caliber glue-guy type player who will give you decent rebounds, acceptable scoring, and play good defense and facilitate offense with picks/screens and ball movement. I am also pleased with Mack, think he will become a quality b/u pg behind Wall. The team still needs a truely reliable scoring SG and SF. Young and Crawford are likely better suited as bench guys you bring in for a scoring punch. And the Wizards still need to find a reliable, starting caliber PF and C who can score from the block and post, and can dominate the glass and defend thier counterparts. KS, Booker, Singleton. . .they all look like keepers as guys who can do good things for a team, coming off the bench in spot duty. Perhaps they should keep McGee as a role player. But still, the only guy on the squad who I look at and see a real starting caliber player right now, is Wall. And Vesely already looks more able to grow into the role of an acceptable starter, than does McGee. McGee can and does contribute, does seem to have made some small improvements on the margins. But his "I am lost out here" and WTF moments still dominate.

The great Kemba Walker was 1-11 from the field and has a -36 +/-....He's now shooting 36% from the floor.
Look, I'm not saying the Walkers isn't a good prospect and I probably would take him over Vesely in a re-draft, but I'm just pointing out that we trash our young prospects early, and continuously overvalue similarly flawed players on other bad teams.

And find me one post in this entire thread where someone called Kemba "great". I dare you to.
I'm getting real sick of folks playing the 'strawman argument' game with everything that gets said on here.

Just think if we had drafted him instead of Vesely. We'd not only won a few more games this year but it would've of put us in a real enviable position having 2 stud pgs.
You could split hairs Dat, but "very good", close to elite, and "stud" are close enough to great that you'd be making a purely rhetorical argument that misses the actual essence of the post.

I was being facetious when I said "great". But you missed the overall point. If a young prospect on the Wiz threw up that type of stat line or was shooting as poorly as Kemba is on a BAD team, we'd be all over him. We'd say he was a D-League player and would drum up 30 scenarios where he's traded for old players, a 2nd round pick, or a throw in on a larger deal. I don't know if Jan was the right pick and again I think Kemba right now would be my pick over Jan in a re-draft (if I had to choose between those two only) BUT I'm not losing sleep thinking about how we missed out on the GREAT Kemba Walker. And yes, people on this board were all over him based on one outing, not his entire season. He's averaging as many pts as fg attempts, shooting 36%, and is on a 2 win team, yet he's the next Jason Terry and Crawford is the next Mike James??
