Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
We talk so much about needing a SG and C, but rarely go any further as to the type of SG or C. I think to identify specific players to target, we need to narrow down the skills we are looking for. Is a pick/roll center more or less important than strong man-to-man defense? At SG, is perimeter shooting more important than defense?

This answer is going to be tied to Beasley. If he sticks here we just need guys who can play defense and limit mistakes. We can hang points on any team in the league. We need length, only Darko is legit over 6'10".

Yep. If Beasley modestly improves his consistency and efficiency, your team can hang with every other good team that uses a similar model (good point guard, wing scorer, big man scorer, wing and big startng role players, 6th man, bench).
Then it comes down to the magnitude of the talent. The nice thing about your team is the abundance of young talent. If you can lock Rubio, Beasley, and Love in as your good point and scorers, and Rubio and Love are locks in my opinion and of high magnitude, theoretically guys should step up from the existing talent pool and fill the less intrinsically necessary roles adequately or better.
Additionally, I think some of the guys not named Rubio, Beasley, and Love have decent trade value around the league. Your team is in a healthy position.
But like you said, Beasley is the determinant factor going forward. If he steps up, you then need a starting (read: consistant) role players at SG and C that can defend, finish, and swing the ball without personal fouls and turnovers.

In the Western Conference, you NEED a good C if you are aiming high. I can live with Pek's irregular/low offensive production; but his poor D and foul trouble issue can't be omitted.

I prefer a strong interior defender at Center. Bynum just walked all over us in the 4th and I imagine all teams with a decent center will do the same.

When I talked about how Pau Gasol was the wrong fit, I used to list seven things I'd look for:
1. Go-To Scorer
2. Wants the ball in the 4th
3. Can create his own shot
4. Strong defensively
5. Good fit for age
6. Good fit for payroll
7. Wants to be here.

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
Kudos, Klomp. This is a much better approach to exploring improvements than, "This guys is playing well. We should trade for him!" or, "you know who's struggling on our team? THIS guy - trade him for everything that might improve us!"
The biggest traits that I would pursue is consistency and veteren presence. So many of the reasons that get listed for wanting a player, we get out of players on our roster, just not regularly and we can't count on it going into any game.
Eh. To use this to highlight my point a little, the Lakers are a different animal than any other team in that regard as they have Bynum and Gasol. We're going to have to have Kevin on one in crunch time, giving up critical inches as they've both got ways to shoot over shorter defenders. They're unique there. We've only really played against those two on the elite level (and Bynum's post-game comment suggest that Pek was doing at worst a passable job against).
Darko and Pek combined to frustrate Demarcus Cousins out of his mind (this was easily one of my favorite games to watch), Darko did a fantastic job on Blake (not a C, but he's their post-scoring option), Duncan's age is a handicap, but we've beat the Spurs twice and all of Timmy's damage was done to us outside of 10 feet.
With Pek/Darko/Randolph/Miller, we could get any of the things we'd want out of a C - height, muscle, length, athleticism, veteran smarts, passing and shooting, and on and on. We can't get it all on the floor at the same time, and won't get it for 30+ minutes a night and can't count on it - but we can't get that without sending out a haul, if we can get it at all. One of our biggest strengths is our depth and ability to throw a lot of different looking lineups on the floor.

Centre:
-Rebounding; If Beasley keeps it up this will be less of an issue, but if we're going to be successful we need to win the rebounding battle and, before Pek's little streak, this team outside of Love couldn't rebound at all.
-Man Defence; I'm going to say here that I think shot blocking is a little overrated, so if the guy can just cover his own man I'll be happy.
-Energy; He needs it. Running up and down the court to get easy passes from Rubio, rebounding every ball he can, hustling for offensive boards, etc, etc.
-BBIQ; Someone who has more than a brick between their ears would be enough but ideally the team should target smart players that would succeed under a guy like Adelman.
Candidates; Brook Lopez, Roy Hibbert, Kevin Garnett, Omer Asik, Mehmet Okur, Chris Kaman
Wing;
-Consistency; I don't really care what the guy brings, as long as he brings it every night. Ellington has good then bad stretches, Wes sucks, Beas had been up and down (hopefully he's reversed that) and it's too early for Webster.
-Commitment to Defence; Regardless of whether Beas has turned a corner, this team needs a wing that will play good defence while he's on the court.
-Shooting; They don't need to be Ray Allen, but making (and being willing to take) the wide open shots Rubio and/or Love create is a must.
-Ball Handling; Adelman has talked about it and I agree, they need another ball handler beside Rubio. Now, the guy doesn't have to be Wade or Kobe or even Tyreke, but he should be able to handle the ball a little and not horribly fail (I'm looking at you, Wes).
Candidates; Eric Gordon, Nicolas Batum, OJ Mayo, George Hill, Courtney Lee, Carlos Delfino, CJ Miles, Jodie Meeks, Marco Bellineli, Rudy Fernandez, Leandro Barbosa, Landry Fields

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
Good lists so far. I pretty much agree with everything. To me just having a guy who can consistently hit wide open shots is up there at the top. I don't think that is too much to ask for in an NBA guard/wing player. If I watch Johnson clank (or miss entirely) one more WIDE open shot, I'm going to crawl through the TV and strangle him. OK, that's physically impossible but you get the idea.
1. Consistent outside shooting
2. Go-to scorer/shot creator (I would have this #1 but Rubio is pretty good at creating for others)
3. Consistent energy/effort
4. BBIQ
5. A real honest to goodness SG (no PGs or SFs playing SG)
6. Post defender

Great post Eddycool, great post....
the reason Bynum killed us is because we didnt have Darko, and Bynum is arguably the best offensive center in the league.
I dont believe we need a sg or c, we just need our players to play at the level we/i know they can.

SG - someone who plays good - great defense, has a reliable jump shot(makes most open looks), and doesn't turn the ball over.
C - someone who can be a defensive anchor, has a solid post game, good rebounder, preferably big(7' at least) and decently athletic, and also smart(doesn't commit turnovers / pick up dumb fouls).

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
Sorry for the cop out, but it’s easier just to say it depends. We’ve already eliminated several trade options simply by making Love and Rubio virtually untouchable.
Many have come to the conclusion that we need a defensive minded center, and essentially any real upgrade at shooting guard. In addition to a lot of the things everyone else noted, that player ideally needs to have a good attitude, they must be a good fit in Adelman’s system, and they should be fully capable of playing in a fast pace offense.
I used to be obsessed with J.R. Smith, but that was before his stint in China. Maybe his value is low just enough to make him an affordable risk (I doubt it). On a related note, Afflalo is not living up to expectations after signing last years contract.

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
My focus still centers around the SG position. Webster is showing signs of providing the things I look for, but trusting his health is tough to do.
My thoughts:
1) Plays within the team's system at both ends of the court. I want a guy who plays their role and doesn't try to put up 50 or get on Sportcenter with a block.
2) Can hit open shots. I think we've seen enough of this team to know that we have 20 open jumpers a game and have yet to capitalize on it.
3) Ball-handing. Part I is the ability/willingness to take the ball to the rim, convert, and draw fouls. Part II is handling the ball well enough to bring the ball upcourt and start the offense.
4) Create scoring chances for others. I'd like someone who is capable of getting easy baskets for others rather than forces their own shot.
5) Plays strong enough defense to at least make life harder for guys the likes of Martin, Kobe, Harden, etc.
6) Acquisition cost is appropriate with the level of upgrade at the position. I don't want to pay excessively for an OJ Mayo when Webster may provide similar results for free.
Candidates: Not many. Gordon is the one player I most want the Wolves to chase after. Once we get past him Batum and Mayo are a long drop down IMO.

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
Shooting Guard: It depends on Beasley. If Beas turns into a 20 pt / 30 min a night wing scorer, than our need for a go-to wing scorer is moot. If that's the case, then as said above we need a good/great defensive wing who can drill the open three and at least handle the ball a little. This sounds kind of like Batum if his handle is up to par. He can handle SGs defensively; Portland had him defending Nash for a good chunk of the Phoenix game.
If Beas morphs back into a black hole, than we need a go-to scoring wing. That would be someone like Gordon if he were to become available.
Center: Defensive anchor, who can catch and finish Rubio's passes. Jonas V anyone? Maybe Bogut, Varajeo? Okafor if we want to take on salary?

I'm under the impression that back spasms aren't necessarily chronic (hopefully someone can provide some info on that topic). It hasn't been an issue for him since the 08-09 season. Ankle injuries on the other hand don't sound very sexy.

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
I want to see the Wolves mesh a bit longer and take the "wait and see" approach. I still have hope we can find what we need from the current roster.
SG - We are all preaching about needing more ball handling, but once Barea comes back and if Malcolm Lee can give us anything...it might not be so bad.
I still think Rip Hamilton would've looked great on this team, if he didn't pout while he was here (and he would've).
Anthony Parker doesn't play the D he used to, but he can knock down open shots, doesn't turn it over, and still has decent awareness. I also think he's cheap, but just signed a deal with Cleveland.
As far as C goes, anyone worth value we would have to overpay for, and most of those guys have their drawbacks as well. I'd like Kaman, but he's not an athlete who can run with Rubio. Brook Lopez might be gettable for Derrick Williams. Brook Lopez would be great on offense, but I have defensive concerns, and he'd need a rebounder on the floor with him.
If this team keeps climbing upward like it has been, it wouldn't be too difficult to get a high caliber guy over here and convince them its worth it. It took the Clippers CP3 to convince Billups, but we should be able to snag a legit role player via free agency/trade with a team like ours.

these 2 go hand in hand many times, and are linked to most of my other skills:
BBIQ
Veteran presense
The other skills we need are:
Hitting open shots
Playing hard with a desire to win
Being a vocal presence/cheerleader
Not turning the ball over
Not making poor mistakes

Re: Ranking the Specific Player Skills to Target
Assuming Beasley continues to be what he was last night (i.e. a #1 option of offense), then we need to fill out the lineup with the best defenders possible (on the perimeter and post). Like OKC, we need our Perkins and Thabo...
I think Webster/Ellington combo can work as they are both showing to be plus defenders and can hit open shots. If we can turn Williams into an athletic, defensive oriented big man I would be very happy. Pek come off the bench when we need some easy post scores..
If we could magically swap Williams for Noah, I think we would be solid.
Noah - Pek
Love - Randolph - Tolliver
Beasley - Johnson
Webster - Ellington - Lee
Rubio - Ridnour - Barea
