Cordero, Blue Jays finalize $4.5M deal

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Thu Feb 2, 2012 5:19 pm

Reliever Francisco Cordero and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized a $4.5-million, one-year contract Wednesday.

The 36-year-old right-hander was 5-3 with a 2.45 ERA and 37 saves in 43 chances for Cincinnati last season, reaching 30 saves for the seventh time. He held batters to a .198 average, the lowest of his career.

Cordero, a three-time all-star, has a 44-45 record with a 3.17 ERA and 327 saves, 12th on the career list. He is expected to fill the setup role for closer Sergio Santos, acquired in December from the Chicago White Sox.

"I've got no problem with that because I've been a setup guy in the past," Cordero said during a conference call. "Being a closer for a long time, I know what to do. I've got to just treat the eighth inning like it's the ninth inning. I've just got to go out and do my job and pass it on to Santos in the ninth inning."

Well its finally official. I think he'll be a solid stop gap guy for us in that setup role.

I was pretty surprised it was Mastroianni they DFA'd. I was sure it'd be one of the random 'pen guys like Farq, Farina, and Magnuson. Probably more about who has open 40 man spots out there and what they might be looking for than talent. Just trying to get everyone to camp.

BTW, why the Calgary Herald? Surely, there's almost the exact same article in the Star and Sun. Not complaining, just seems like a weird source for Jays news.

I still think that AA should have gotten Street, for a player to be named later.

The question is can we get there with our mediocre starting rotation and mediocre batting with the exception of Jose who won't get pitches anyways.

Good moves by AA shoring up the bullpen. Good depth if there any injuries and I think will help the relatively young pitching staff get some wins.
I know some are concerned about our offense but we still have a lot of young guys who may not have tapped their potential yet.

A tradeable asset at the deadline.

Solid pickup. Now only if we had a big bat and quality starter to go with it...

I think starters AA is looking at is Ervin Santana, Zack Greinke, Jeff Nieman, Francisco Liriano, maybe Matt Harrison (if texas signs Oswalt), Anibal Sanchez, Brandon McCarthy, and a lot more. You Guys have anymore to add on, because i know I missed a lot.

Would definitely love to have Anibal Sanchez if he's available. He had a below par year for his standards and his stock is definitely lower now than it could ever be, but I think Miami will keep him with their much better roster this year.

Agreed. One thing with AA is that if we don't here a rumor, a trade might be in the works.

Could only hope so, he could potentially become our #1 or 2 starter if he plays well consistently, and having him, Romero and potentially a good Morrow would be an amazing 1-3 rotation
