Anyone else cringe when perkins is in the low post?

Post#1 » by mjokc88 » Sat Jan 28, 2012 6:39 am

I close my eyes or look away every time I see Perk in the post so that he can do his two dribbles, turn around and throw up a short baby hook that hits nothing but iron. He's playing great D though.

I agree with you there, but I think the only time we should feed perk is if the other team has an extremely small undersized big men. I always feel that if perk put just a little bit more air on that baby hook quite a few more of those would fall for him.

I disagree. Perkins is scoring .58 PPP on post ups. That's ridiculously bad. No reason to post him up when he sucks at it. Let him be happy playing defense and setting screens (and hopefully, rebounding sometime this season).

I'm with ya, it's hard to watch his offense, hopefully we won't ever need it. I think he should just pass the ball back unless ridiculously open, otherwise its almost a turn over.

Turnover machine. Shouldn't have a role offensively.

What's interesting is that Perk averaged from 2008 til 2010 about 9pts per game in 28min playing time. He also shot 59% from the field.

With OKC he is averaging about 5pts in 26 min playing time on 47% FG.

Why is that? Was he just more open under the basket because of the good ball movement of Boston?

He looked better offensively for like, the first week of the season but has since reverted to really crappy.

I think Perkins would benefit from trying to use the glass more, utilize some drop steps or even some pump fakes. Turning baseline once in a while would help keep defenses more honest and make it slightly harder to double team him in the post. He doesn't get a lot of lift and seems afraid of getting his shot blocked, but he could counter that by changing his shot angles.

It seems like Perkins doesn't find the rim visually when he shoots the baby hook shot. It's more of a prayer shot.

Finding a way to efficiently utilize Perkins offensively 4 - 6 possessions a game should be a team goal.

He posts up too much. Perkins got a lot of his offense in Boston off ball movement, even PnR at times. I think some of his trouble stems from the fact that Westbrook doesn't pass as catchable a ball as Rondo does, and we lack playmakers in the front court (Pierce and Garnett were both terrific).

He's also at the high post more with us, which is where Garnett usually was in Boston. That's obviously not a position where he will be putting up points.

To a certain extent I do cringe... the sad part is that it is bad, but still somehow better than last season.

spacing is a bigger issue. Boston's big three gather all the attention outside the paint and Perk was left free by the defenses. Sefolosha and Ibaka aren't exactly Ray Allen and KG offensively.

OP: Perkins is a terrible player, not only offensively, but he's an extremely overrated defender as well. OKC gives up tons of points inside and Perkins can't rotate to save his life. he's got very low bball IQ and doesn't even know what happens on defense. he looked good with KG telling him what to do one the court, but then everyone looks good with KG. he doesn't look good anymore. he's been playing terrible on both ends and this overrating has gotta stop. Ibaka is overrated too, btw, but he's at least good as a help defender. Perkins plays well on man defense when he doesn't foul (which is rare) but he's flat out bad in help defense.

despite being a guard, Sefolosha is by far the most impactful defender on the Thunder.

but without Perkins we would get destroyed inside by Memphis and the Lakers. We will need him if we are to get out of the west anytime soon.

Everything you guys state above is what Celtics fans included in their critique of Perk at the time of the trade. I, for one, would have tarred and feathered if some could have seen me in person, based on some of the responses.

We watched him for 8 years. Usually after that much time in the league nothing really changes. A likeable guy, but very limited.

P.S., I really like your overall squad, especially Harden.

Perkins is now at .58 PPP on post up attempts according to Synergy, which is very bad.

On the topic of his defense, I think he's a very capable defensive player. He ranks very highly in Synergy at every one on one defensive play type. Rotating he's still not great, and I agree with bastillon that his defensive IQ is overrated a little bit. But man defense is probably the only thing Perkins is contributing right now at a high level...
