Re: Official Raptors 2012 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
I agree that Barnes' footwork is advanced compared to the other prospects, and that he would grab more boards on a team with a weaker frontline. Just watching his game to me it doesn't look like he will translate well to the NBA offensivly. I would say the best player i can compare him to, is a young Paul Pierce, that would be his ceiling, but Paul Pierce is so smooth and deceptive with the ball, while Barnes looks a little stiff and mechanical, he is definetly further along offensively right now in college than the other wings, I just think if we draft him before those other wings are off the board, we risk missing a franchise changing player, maybe Barnes has the better rookie year but he almost looks like a finished product to me. If this is the last year we are a top 5 pick maybe the sure thing good player isn't the best way to go, he could be our 3rd guy going forward maybe our 2nd if we draft the next DRose, but that means we are going to go back to the draft or were on the treadmill. Just how i see it right now, not set in stone yet of course though.

Tony Wroten seems to be finding himself lately. He definitely needs to keep his turnovers lower and today he did a great job. Wroten's bad rep is fairly unjustified. He is a potential star IMO.

I still like the Mashburn comparison for Barnes, who ever came up with it.

This poll is weird since I think most people would vote Davis if given any option but others are weighing in who we are likely to get

Why? did you say that the 1993 drafts number 1 pick should be shawn bradley over chris webber because he is white?

I remember it being published in his newsletter but he's disavowed that statement several times.

Re: Official Raptors 2012 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
Barnes has the moves, im sure he will develop more and refine them and do whatever he needs to do to be more effective offensivly, But is he doesn't have it, not right now, and "it" is the most unteachable thing there is, hes stiff with the ball, not fluid, he doesn't have the court vision, Maybe this guy isn't being used right, but i just dont see him being a number 1 guy in the NBA and winning anything, maybe he has more to show, but not seeing it yet, he just doesn't have the killer instinct or the touch. If we are looking to draft a good 3rd option, fine defender and rebounder then Barnes is a great pick.

Re: Official Raptors 2012 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
I put this in the other thread, but I think it was in the wrong spot. I don't think that Anthony Davis is a worthy #1 overall pick. I just get the sense that he's massively overrated because he won't be an NBA superstar. Maybe this draft isn't as strong as we think it is because if Davis is the best player and he's not a #1 option then is there any in this draft?
What do people on the board really think Anthony Davis is going to be?
I watch him and think he's going to be a dominant defensive PF who can get some garbage points and alley-oops. Like a 10 point, 12 rebound, 3 block guy as his ultimate career potential. I see Marcus Camby v2 or Tyson Chandler v2.
When I think of a #1 overall pick, I'm looking for a definitive go-to offensive scorer. A #1 option. I don't see Anthony Davis becoming that guy. I can see him being an all-NBA defender and maybe being an NBA Allstar a couple times but you want a #1 overall pick to really be an MVP type ideally.
He's not going to be a 20/10 guy so I don't know how you think he's a #1 overall pick.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Official Raptors 2012 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
Anthony Davis will be a stud. He only recently had a growth spurt. He's a defensive beast. Can dribble. Hit the shot. Doesn't need plays to impact the game. Has a good motor.
The question is how many 20/10 guys are in the league period. He may end up being 18/8/2 blocks and that is worthy of a No. 1 pick in this draft. Drummond is a disappointment. I saw a UConn game and then a Kentucky game back to back and there is an obvious difference between the two.
Edit: I should also say he has shown glimpses of having an effective offensive game. He may be a 20/10 guy on the right team. Like the raptors.

Evaluating Davis's potential on the offensive end is difficult because of how Kentucky uses him. What he has shown is good ball handling for his position, a nice-looking jumpshot and good passing skills. The few occasions where he has played with his back to the basket, he hasn't looked smooth on turnaround jumpshots.
He's certainly not the best offensive player in this draft at this juncture by any stretch of the imagination, but I think he's a guy, who when combined with a scoring perimeter player, can lead a team that competes for a championship based on all the other things he brings to the table.
As it is, the league seems to be going away from big men as number 1 options on offense.
