dandridge, you were right. These players are really, really bad.
The Randy Wittman adrenalin rush has worn off and the team is getting crushed, as you correctly predicted. I don't know who originated this quote, but it goes something to the affect, "When adversity or pressure is applied to people they revert to who they really are."
Washington's players are really putting on a bad display of basketball. They are getting DESTROYED by the Clippers and have been getting worse each game now.
Flip Saunders couldn't do anything with these guys.
I was very wrong.

To your credit while you are very forceful with your convictions and even obdurate in your rejection of alternatives you are, by the nature of your willingness to make strong statements, at times totally and completely wrong and you are a pretty good sport about it.
Cheers for that but let's go ahead and turn this into either a hub for venting our general dissatisfaction or a venue for public concessions once we've absolved you for your optimism.

Re: The Official I Owe Flip Saunders a BIG Apology Thread
I thought all they needed to do was run, play wild and free, and let their bigs play big.
Now, I think they're what Larry Bird called his team one day. "A bunch of sissies". If you can't win fair, somebody give a hard foul. Not a flagrant 2, but just don't let them punk you. Start pushing, shoving, grabbing, ... do SOMETHING.
The money these "men" make should make them want to bust their asses at least trying out there.
I might need to chill out from watching this team for a while.

Ted must actually like owning sissy teams? I mean look how long McPhee has had his job! Caps are the "down filled" laughing stock of the NHLwhen it comes to being tough.. Then there's Ernie.. Go figure..

CCJ,
You don't owe anyone an apology. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. No one is right all the time in sports and yours are good, strong opinions.

CCJ, you are indeed a good sport. And, believe me, I wish I had been the one that was wrong on this issue and that all we needed was a coaching change to turn this pathetic of a team around. Hopefully, the Flip firing will lead to something positive....a realization for Ted that we don't have enough talent on this team to truly be competitive and that many more changes need to be made to turn this franchise around. The very next change should be to can Ernie Grunfeld.

Grunfield should be canned tonight. What a pathetic team we're trotting out there.

The move had to be made but I knew you couldn't turn the chicken sh-t team into chicken salad. This was an edict from the top and that's not Ernest Grunfeld, who definitely needs to be shown the door. Ted wants Anthony Davis or whomever the top pick or top 5 is going to be. That means having a horrible team. But no more excuses after this year. I'm tired of drafting in the lottery and coming up empty.

Can't believe I'm agreeing with JJ on a CCJ topic... Oh well...

No need to apologize brother, you haven't done anything wrong to anybody...

Nothing to apologize for, Flip failed previously with Haywood, Butler etc. and he threw players under the bus. Flip is enjoying $millions w/o having to work.

Re: The Official I Owe Flip Saunders a BIG Apology Thread
I greatly appreciate both your tenacity and your humility, CCJ. We get into spirited discussions and debates because you have fiercely held opinions, and I love that. The board is a richer place because of it; either you're right and we learn something, or you're wrong, and in the process of figuring that out, we all learn something. It's a win-win!
I guess I'm just saying, I love that you argue so hard, but also take an honest look at your positions over time. You don't just lock in for the long haul and ignore other people. Sometimes I think you drive Kevin to drink, but hey, someone has to.
Nothing but love here. Can't wait to debate you on draft picks this spring. ^_^

I'm happy he's fired......gives us a chance to sign a real coach next season.
Forget apologizing to him, a lot of our sad state of affairs is on him. He sat right next to Grunfeld and gave his opinions on roster moves and draft picks.
Good riddance. CCJ, if anything keep complaining EG needs to go.....we were heard on Flip.

In fairness to you and others, i think the argument against Saunders from the anti-Saunders contingent was simply the misuse of players in your and others perception. I don't think that's necessairly changed (McGee isn't exactly playing a lot of minutes), the team was losing because it was bad, the rest of the league continually has ripped the team for epic stupidity in terms of BBIQ, like worst ever stupidity. Personally, I've never seen an NBA team portrayed this way. in past years there have been teams like the Clippers, and I think the Nuggets in the late nineties who were considered contenders for worst ever, the Nets too, but they were always viewed as teams totally bereft of talent, our team is viewed as chronically stupid, ignorant and self-defeating in the epic scale of the total lack of self-understanding and accountability.
I think for some there was a sense that the team would be better with a coach that recognized and utilized the talents of the players available, I dont believe the team was doing that with Saunders, I don't believe they're doing that now. I think both arguments are equally true. I think the team is not maximizing its potential and I also think the team would be absolutely wretched with a great coach as well. Where there's smoke there's fire, and there isn't anyone anywhere who seemingly doesnt consider the team unbelievably stupid in terms of "getting it" in "team" basketball. That's the root of the problem, but your arguments weren't any less true either in my view, it's just that in the final analysis, even if the team was misused, the team was still epic horrible, period, and the coach wasn't the key problem.
At the end of the day its imperative that the team trade Nick Young for whatever we can get, trade Baltche for anything, and seriously consider moving McGee when we can and just build from scratch. I think a total fumigation of the team's bad apples and idiots needs to happen, and if we lose a lot of upside with one of the deals in McGee, so be it. We just need to strip it down to building blocks, and rebuild from scratch because at the end of the day, there's a reason why were neck and neck with Charlotte for the worst team in the league. Build around the lunchpail guys and Wall and utilize this draft to find an elite guy and a great shooter to replace Young, or big man to replace McGee/Baltche.

Re: The Official I Owe Flip Saunders a BIG Apology Thread
This is my team, so its stupidity is right in my face, but pre-LeBJ Cavs seemed pretty darn stupid at times. So did turn of the millennium Warriors, just to name two off the top of my head. For that matter, the old, overpaid Knicks often played some of the most selfish, stupid ball around. Bringing Larry Brown in was, in theory, a good move. If you can't get rid of all the overpaid, selfish players, at least bring in a hard a$$ approach that stresses fundamentals (in a drill like manner) and uses games partially to extend those lessons, and use drills, practices, and games as laboratories to see which of these players might, with the application of heavy-handed persuasion, fall a little more into line and play more as part of a team.
If you can't get rid of overpaid and/or selfish dead weight all at once, at least priorities can be more readily set for playing time, trades, and acquisitions. Wizards need a new GM and new coach, working together (organically, holistically, however you want to phrase it) to produce such an outcome, with the future outcome more important than current wins. Sucks for Saunders, a decent coach, but circumstances made it hard for him to be that coach, and I don't really see at this point how EG could possibly be that GM.
Balancing on court results with achievement of established goals would result in playing time. It wouldn't matter if Blatche or Young scored 20, McGee had a double-double with 5 blocks, Wall got 10 assists, because the goal was partially to show growth in your game in a structured setting. If a Wizard has an attitude about such a regimented approach, then he must like losing more than being coached, and that helps make decisions about the future. Some of the answer seems to be getting new players, but some of it seems to be a different approach with the players already here.

Re: The Official I Owe Flip Saunders a BIG Apology Thread
This is one of the worst "teams" I have seen since I started watching (and understanding) basketball in the 00's. We have an uncoachable roster that Red Auerbach would have trouble mustering a 25 win season from. Clearly, the blame needs to be put on the man in charge: Ernie. I've been calling for his head for years but knew with Loyal Abe it would never happen. Ernie is still living off "but he traded Kwame for Butler" (yes, I heard this at a bar last week). Un-freakin'-believable! If Ted doesn't do something this offseason, we're in for a future of hell.
Flip didn't deserve to be in this position, but he did signed the dotted line. He's a good coach but when there isn't coachable players... You're going to fail. He should of known to never take this job but he did and now he's gone. Oh well. Randy won't be any different.
We need a rebuild form the top down and I hope Ted doesn't cheat us of that.

Coaches rarely make a difference. You have to be a really bad or really good coach to change the w/l column much, and Flip was clearly in the middle somewhere. I think you just credited him with more (bad) influence than he really had.

Coaching changes sure made a difference in Philly, Indiana, and Charlotte (before the salary dump)

Re: The Official I Owe Flip Saunders a BIG Apology Thread
Getting better players helped Indy. Indy got Collison and West, and George and Hibbert become more experienced.
Philly is benefiting from depth, improved players and a lockout shortened season. Collins also is probably one of those coaches in the NBA that makes a difference. Adelman's another example this year. I didn't say all coaches, just most coaches.
