Re: Not getting Paul Was the biggest blessing in disguise?
Glad to hear we'll have his bird rights.
I'm not quite ready to write off that we are currently better than we would be with Cp3 Melo and Amare... but time will tell.
If Lin continues to produce at this level, he'd certainly make the case that we're better off having gotten Chandler.. As the difference between Lin and Cp3 wouldn't be worth not having a C.... But Lin would really have to maintain to keep that assumption truthful.
Time will tell if there are weaknesses in his game that teams will hone in on now that he's making some noise.. and whether he'll continue to be able to flourish.. No real reason to think it would affect his ability to pass... but I think we also have to remember that he came out of no where, and in this compact 'on to the next' season.. I doubt many teams have tape on what Lin can do, or if there is even enough tape... He's no longer a small name teams won't bother covering, yet I don't think teams have reached the point of being able to scout him and pick out his weaknesses prior to the games, which they soon will be.... But with Melo and Amare coming back, there's only so much teams will be able to do against him without letting up on the three other big names.... But I suppose simple things like his tendencies, where he goes etc will come with time, like any player.
He's a great dribbler, and as i've said, often looks almost out of control winding through and around people.. maybe it's because he gets so low.. or bc it looks like he's always a bit behind the ball or catching up to it or something when he's weaving.. But I find myself getting the "they're going to steal the ball!" feeling somewhat often.. But it isn't actually stolen that much, which I guess just means it's the way he looks... Hopefully it isn't something teams find a way to capitalize on.
Nonetheless, his most important job will be setting people up, which unlike even his driving to the hoop, doesn't seem like something a lot of teams will be able to stop.. at least as of now.

Lin is not Nash. Nash is a deadly long range shooter. He strikes me as more of a Jason Kidd type, especially given his 6-3/6-4 height.
Honestly, Knicks appear to finally have a player who makes his teammates better (unlike you know who...).

Not getting Paul caused us to make the move to amnesty Billups and go after Tyson. So we addressed our big man/interior D issue.
Now, Lin's emergence has allowed us to almost circumvent our cap situation. I believe we hold his early bird rights, which means the most he can get offered is the MLE, and we can match it.
To get a 23 yr old pure PG of this caliber for the MLE is a major coup. Not to mention how the addition of Lin resets our depth and balance, since everyone can go back to their real positions.
I mean, we got lucky, and caught lightening in a bottle, but we also just covered the two most important positions in basketball for $15M
From a pure financial standpoint, this has to be a blessing
Nah, we don't own his early bird rights as kos explained the other day, since he was waived. But since he's a 2-year rook, he can only be offered the league average salary (or MLE) by another team, and we have the option to match, so long as we have our own MLE. So the only way we lose him is if say Steve Nash wants more than the vet min or bi-annual, in which case...I'd rather just keep the 23 year old PG over the 39 yr-old one with 1 or 2 years left, if even.
Is this new? I know plenty of players who were offered more than MLE after two years. Okur comes to mind. So as Arenas before him.
Also Coon was mentioning yesterday that once a player was picked up from waiver wire, it is as if we traded for him, thus we would have his early bird rights. He was not too sure as this situation has never happened, but that was his logic.

12 assists would lead the league so sign me up! Realistically 6 or 7 assists would be fantastic

He averages more than that when he's passing to Tyson, Novak and Jeffries

It came with the 2005 CBA, hence why it's called the "Gilbert Arenas" provision to address stud 2nd rounders being able to leave after 2 years since the home team didn't have any exceptions or salary cap space to match offers. I'm guessing Okur's contract with the Jazz came before this CBA too, but it was still dubbed the Arenas rule.

It wouldn't make sense that we don't have his rights though. We picked him up off of waivers. We assumed his contract, and all that comes with it.

Essentially a 2nd rounder can get the MVP in the first two years, but can't get more than the mid-level after that? It is ridiculous. I thought the Arenas rule simply allows teams to go over the cap to sign their own FAs after two years so they don't lose them to free agency. Didn't know it also prevents players to make more than the mid-level.

Loving Lin but we really need to cool it. Couple of really good games but you gotta know this run is not going to last. What i do like is his competitiveness and his hustle, that wont change. And he keeps his dribble which allows him to get out of bad situations. Overall I think he's going to be solid for us, i wouldnt expect these crazy numbers to last though.

No, they're only limited to making MLE for the first 2 years of the new contract. After that it can be backloaded and jump to max salary. More on it here:
https://webfiles.uci.edu/lcoon/cbafaq/salarycap.htm#Q38
I think the idea is otherwise, 2nd round studs could potentially make max (like Gilbert Arenas did) after just 2 years in the league, while 1st round picks are locked into a 4 year rookie contract.

The numbers are irrelevant. He runs the offense, and he runs it well. That alone will take us places.

I'm just going by what kos said, since he seems to have access to the actual CBA somehow, while I'm just going off Larry Coon's FAQ. I originally thought we'd have his Early Bird Rights too since we claimed him, but kos says there's no language like that in the CBA, so it's not clear how the NBA will decide.

Great post, we certainly got lucky with Linster....not something I'm used to being a Mets/Knicks/Jets fan.

Yeah safe to assume he will lead the league in assits.............................
It's very hard to tell whats going to happen it has only been 3 games but he has looked amazing and showing skills where you want them not just getting lucky, but please please please calm down i really feel some of you think he is the best player on our team or something or that absurd nature, let time tell in the very least we will be forever indebted to him for salvaging this dreadful season.

completely agree with the OP. The best part is keeping our young guys. Yeah CP3 can make bums look like all stars (see Aaron Gray), but I'd much rather have young guys who are only gonna get better than have to recycling our bench every year with vets on the wrong side of their prime.

Pretty stoked to see that we can bring Lin back. I was starting to wonder if he kept his play up would that make him too expensive for the Knicks.
I was really stoked on the Tyson Chandler acquisition. Almost every night now we got the biggest guy on the court and for his size he is unbelievably athletic.
On top of everything else Chauncy had what could be a career ending injury. I know that it's possible it wouldn't have happened if he stayed with the Knicks but this schedule just isn't built for him.

This post only makes sense if Lin continues to play well. After 3 games we cannot say that he will for sure. Lets give it some more time before making proclamations...
This is what i have with other Knicks fans, ya'll so quick to make predictions and what not. Shumpert was Wade 2.0, Fields was a future all star, Frye was the next KG, etc etc
STOP IT ! ALREADY STOP! don't you guys ever learn?
