Right, there are sections of PG county that are quite liveable, nice even-- and due to the broadbrush negative reputation they tend to be cheaper. PG county is pretty huge, there's a wide range of neighborhoods, from rural to urban. I bought a house in 20783 (Adelphi neighborhood) at a nice price when we couldn't find anything affordable closer in. I have friends who bought in Brentwood and Mount Ranier who are similarly happy with their deals.

Coincidentally -- we're actually due to rent out our 2 BR basement apartment in an equivalent price range. The fridge just died and we have some stuff down there (like a 60 inch projection screen TV that a friend gave us) right now, but it's basically move-in ready.

Commute to the Capitol area is a straight shot down New Hampshire ave or Riggs road to North Capitol, but how long of a driving commute that is depends on traffic on any given day. Commute elsewhere is pretty easy by car since we're easily accessible to both the Beltway (495) I-95 North and the Inter-County Connector. But you're basically driving everywhere. Other than buses (slow-ish) there's no real public transit out this way.

Really it all depends what you're looking for.

I would second the suggestion of looking along either the Green or Yellow metro lines, both will take you close to NDU. As you can tell, unless you know DC well, it can be a hit or miss proposition and most likely too expensive at this time. There are a few options by the Waterfront metro that "may" satisfy your budget. Practically, you'll likely be looking at places in Alexandria and places south along the Green/Yellow metro lines, or perhaps further out west along the Orange line. There may also be buses that commute between NDU and a metro stop. My wife does that from L'Enfant Plaza and she works at Bolling Air Force base in Anacostia.

Public transport into and from DC, and within DC is pretty good. Public transport around VA or MD will typically require a ca, especially if you're going to be in sales.

I would find a place in VA. Somewhere like Arlington, Rosslyn, Clarendon and just commute to work.
Arlington is pretty nice.

I am a DC native. I am not black. My mother is Jewish.
The entire DC metro area was a blast during the 70s, the 80s and for most of the 90s.
Now it is just overpriced.
It has been overpriced for over 10 years.
I myself would not even move here now and I love this place more than life itself.
I love this place for what it used to be. Not for what it has turned into now.
