Oakland Raiders Cut Stanford Routt

Post#1 » by JustAwesome » Fri Feb 10, 2012 5:41 am

Less than one year ago, Al Davis made Stanford Routt one of the cornerstones of the Oakland Raiders defense with a lavish contract that kept him from free agency.

Routt became the first player casualty under the new regime with the Raiders.

Routt was released on Thursday just one year into a $54.5 million, five-year contract, ending his seven-year tenure in Oakland as the team heads in a new direction.

Wonder if anyone else is going to pay him $10 million a year? Also, wonder who the Raiders will cut next?

Routt was a solid corner and for sure the best on our roster.

Dude made way too much money though.

Routt was second worst when it came to giving up touchdowns (eight for the season). He also committed 17 penalties, which is worst for cornerbacks.

General managers take that into account.

Detroit sure could use him. He'll find a team no problem. Not gonna sniff the same kind of contract though.

Thats the same thing I thought when I saw this and looked up his numbers. Of course I'm a Lions fan so I'm biased, but still.

I've always felt that the Lions could use a top tier cornerback. Still not sure why everyone thinks they need to upgrade the defensive line. I think that area is fine.

Numbers don't tell the entire story. Routt wasn't nearly as bad as the stats indicate. He was solid in coverage. Made his share of mistakes but he's turned into a far better player than I thought he'd be.

I would not mind the Packers signing him for some depth if they are able to get him at a good bargain.

Routt goes to KC, which chose him over re-signing Brandon Carr. Intriguing because they're about the same caliber of player and I'm not sure Carr will get that high of a contract that they gave Routt (3yr/$19.6M/$4M guaranteed).

Carr is an underrated free agent. Dude can start just about anywhere in just about any scheme.

Niners could use him, especially with Rogers being a free agent.

I was hoping that KC would franchise Carr, which would give the Bears a shot at stealing Bowe away from the Chiefs. I'm still holding out hope :D .
