There's a lot of misinformation about why Josh Smith plays the 4 here. Just wow. Saying Luol Deng is a better rebounder at his position. When Josh Smith grabbed like 16 boards playing the 3 in the playoffs?

He plays PF primarily because we drafted and overpaid Marvin Williams because we thought he was some sort of stretch 4 but he's too soft to normally play the 4.

Smith played the Power 3 tonight because Marvin Williams can competently defend the post vs Ryan Anderson. But Smith plays the 4 most nights because Marvin Williams cant defend 4s or hold position until Smith can help down and block shots.

Marvin Williams is a stretch player at the 3 because he's worse rebounding and defensive 4 than Smith. And hes unmoveable for a true stretch 4. So Smith draws the tougher assignment on both ends. Doesnt get too get to defend and leak out and run the wing in transition for a good easy 6 points per game. Thats poor roster construction and asset assessment. Thats not Smiths fault.

Steve Smith "He's only 6'8 and a small forward 19 rebounds and 3 blocks and 5 assists."

This is mind numbing. maybe I should've said Lebron-lite. Throwing hook shots in the paint over Dwight Howard. Imagine if Hawks had a big stretch PF to force 3s guarded him full time.

Those are hall of fame numbers. You do realize he's a small forward playing small ball?

And since you won't say it dice, Josh Smith is the #1 rebounder in the entire NBA at that small forward position. Better rebounding SF than Lebron. Better rebounding SF than Durant.
And phenomenal running the wing in transition. Deng?? Thats not fair.

And when the Hawks get those crossmatches they dominate. If Marvin Williams was tough enough to guard PFs and still shoot outside then Smith would be the SF way more and put up these monster numbers.

Josh Smith is not a conventional small forward but he is a small forward and he is way better than Deng.

In my point of view, Josh Smith deserve a nomination way more than Joe Johnson, Luol Deng and especially Paul Pierce!!!
Deng´s the 2nd best player in the best Eastern Conference team, therefore, he´s in...
Joe Johnson should be replaced with J-Smoove because D-Will is the only "true" PG on the bench..

Williams, Pierce, Igoudala, Deng, Smith, Bosh, Hibbert, that´s the lineup... Bad for Danny Granger, he deserved as well

Nash is averaging 15 and 10 to Monta's 22 and 6. Give Nash 19 shots a game and he gets 22 points a game easily.

Deron is killing it scoring and in assists. Much better distributor than Monta. Don't know how you think Monta is better than him.

I do agree about Josh. He's got screwed the last 2 years.

and sorry Josh Smith is not as good player as Paul Pierce, not close
watching iso plays set up for Josh Smith vs Suns was painful, noteworthy he didn't score on any of them

he is a v.good player, great defender/rebounder but I'd take Pierce and Deng over him easily, they are just craftier, smarter players and better scorers

I totally and whole heartedly disagree, I think Deng can't hold a candle to Josh Smith. Pierce is on his last leg and at this point I wouldn't take him over Josh either. Get out of here with Iguodala too, crunch and mix the numbers up all you wantit doesn't make a difference. It just doesn't pass the smell test, Josh Smith is a better player than Deng and Iguodala. Sorry!!

based on what they have the third best record in the east

When the picks were made, the Hawks were the 5th seed in the East.

The coaches selected Joe Johnson over Smith... I would have went the other way, but that is how it worked out.

Should he be a team's #1 option? Probably not. But to compare his efficiency as the #1 option and primary focus of opposing defenses to someone like Harden, who has the luxury of coming off the bench and playing in the shadow of guys like Durant and Westbrook, is comparing apples and lawn furniture.

I'm fine if you want to argue that he doesn't deserve to be an All-Star over someone like Nash, there's a legitimate argument there. But to talk up Harden as more worth of an AS spot while calling Monta a "no impact" or "negative impact" player is completely and totally ridiculous.

End rant.

There's some logic to your rant, but not a lot really. I don't care if Harden comes off the bench, does that change the fact that he's still more efficient in doing what he does, and he does a lot more, all more effectively, all in less time than Ellis, while not being the focal point.

Harden is good. Should he have been an All Star? Not at all. Should Ellis? Probably. Over Nash? Nope. Over Parker? Absolutely not. So who would he replace? Westbrook? Nah, his teams ahead, so he deserves it.

This is why Ellis is not on there.

Josh Smith was a pure snub, theres no excuse for that.

The whole point of my rant was that coming off the bench is what allows Harden to put up the numbers he does. The fact that he's not counted on to create offense, to take the tough shots, etc. is exactly what makes him able to be as efficient as he is. He has the luxury of being able to defer to Westbrook and Durant, Monta does not. Monta was in a similar situation early in his career - playing the 6th man role and not drawing the attention of opposing defenses - and he put up 20/5/4 with a TS% of 58.

16/9/3 with 1.5 steals and 2.2 blocks should get you an all star game. Coaches love JJ and don't like Smith, that's the only reason he's going.

16 points isn't that impressive when you have a sub-500 TS%. Smith is one of the least efficient players in the NBA (when looking at starters).

Tiago Splitter and Brandon Rush have higher TS% than Chris Paul and Lebron. It's not a very telling stat.

Its'a efficiently stat

Why wouldn't role-players be more efficient than superstars who take all the bad shots?

Just saying that it doesn't seem like a very accurate comparative stat. Especially so when you factor in all the different qualifiers, such as the one you brought up.

It's a great stat. It just requires context, like every other stat.
