Is Jimmy Butler a SG or a SF?
I'm the GM of a team in a "fantasy" basketball league that uses players' game stats and runs the stats through a simulator to determine outcomes of games against other teams in the league.
We're deciding on rookie positions and Jimmy Butler has been a source of controversy. Due to his inconsistent minutes, there isn't a lot of data to accurately show how he's been used. One website lists him as playing almost exclusively at SF while another website shows him playing 3/4 of his minutes at SG. The basic rule in the league is that a player is given a main position, then he is allowed eligibility at the position one higher than his main position (PG/SG, SG/SF, etc.).
My opinion is that he's more of a shooting guard than a small forward. What would you guys say is his main position?

100 pct SF. He was forced into action at SG, due to multiple injuries. He's never going to be a SG.

In college a SF. In the NBA both.

Is there much of a difference? I'd say he's a SF for now until he shows some sort of jumper. I think he's got good enough handles to play the 2.

6'7 230 is too big to guard most SG. Not to mention he has NO offensive, SG skills. Cmon guys.

He's more of a SG because, like Ronnie Brewer, he has a size advantage against more guards he will defend because he's 6'7. But his frame and bulk allows him to play SF as well but loses some of that size advantage against most 3's.

I would say he's a SF because of his size, and lack of an offensive game.

The people in this thread, just dont understand basketball. Rip is 6'7 191....and he's a BIG SG. Butler Is 6'7 220-230. He's not guarding SG!!! Not for more than 5 minutes. Not to mention, everything I see, SCREAMS, lack of outside offense, which SCREAMS, defensive SF.

So because you have a difference of opinion, the people that you don't agree with don't understand basketball? That makes alot of sense.
He can play both positions because of his size. He has the athleticism and ball handling ability to play guard and the bulk to guard 3's.

This guy used caps and a lot of exclamation points, he must be right.
For starters Rip isn't 6'7, he's 6'5 or 6 at best, which SCREAMS you don't know what you're talking about.

He's listed 6'7. Fact. Unless you personally measured him? Dont be mad because you lack knowledge.

He's alternately listed as 6'6" and 6'7". I'd say closer to 6'6".
But that's not really relevant. The measurements you're talking about aren't definitive for someone's ability to defend shooting guards. Jimmy Butler's pre-draft measurements were similar to Joe Johnson's pre-draft measurements-- actually, Johnson was 11 pounds heavier at 226 vs. 215 for Butler-- and Johnson can defend shooting guards just fine.
In Thibs' system Butler can play either position but may have more trouble defending SFs b/c of his relatively small wingspan. The offensive game that he's showed thus far does not scream traditional SG.

Seems like he has the lateral quickness to guard most 2s, and is big enough to guard most 3s. You are who you guard, so I'd say he's definitely a 2/3 tweener. Because you know, that's allowed.

He's a SF. It's not debatable and 90 percent of his career will be spent at sf. Every players height and weight are exaggerated. Comparing him to to JJ is laughable, considering JJ has the total offensive package at SG, and butler has almost none.

Cant put the ball on the floor enough to be called a guard. He does make a lot of cuts though and goes hard on the offensive glass.
I'd say SF.

The question was clearly "main position". Of course he can play both.

Would you consider Ronnie Brewer to be a SG or a SF?

Same. Sf. He can play both. Best position is SF, although I believe he's def smaller than JB.
