A cheap one year deal? sure why not. Might help us win some games and will at least bring in some fans to watch the guy.

Will he have to be on the 25(40)-man roster to start his suspension?

Blue Jays pull out on Manny Ramirez

The Toronto Blue Jays are no longer interested in signing free agent Manny Ramirez, according to Fox Sports.
The Jays did show marginal interest earlier in the offseason, attending Ramirez's batting practice, but the team has backed off the outfielder who will turn 40 this season and still must serve a 50-game suspension.
The Baltimore Orioles publicly backed off of their pursuit of Ramirez, leaving the Oakland Athletics as the favourites to land the former World Series MVP.

What about trying to acquire Ortiz? It would be hard to get him because its a in the division trade. But we have the prospects to acquire him. He would be great.

What's worse than the Red Sox's facing Ortiz for 2-3 more years? Us facing our prospects for the next 15. Your talking about pulling off a reverse Lawrie time trade. Imagine having to watch D'Arnaud become an All-Star in a Red Sox's uniform?
I'd rather not make the Red Sox's a better team. There is a reason there are rarely trades within the division. Teams don't like getting burned. Right now these types of thoughts are short sighted. Helps us for a couple years then it screws us for another 10.

It wouldn't take much to get Papi from the Red Sox, methinks. They badly want to clear salary and he makes a ton of money. They traded away 3-WAR Marco Scutaro for a bag of rocks, and they didn't even have a shortstop to replace him with.

They would never trade someone as important as Ortiz has been to the Red Sox to a division rival.

Are you dumb? who the hell would trade D'Arnaud for Ortiz? The only problem I see is that we are in the same division.

Your right we would trade an assortment of people in the low level minors for the #1 DH in baseball (as per fWAR)? It would take near MLB ready talent to land Ortiz, especially within the division. You are looking at a top 5 prospect plus a few top 50.
Trading for Ortiz is a terrible idea.

The only difference is because of positional adjustments, you are looking at a 5 WAR player playing one of the hardest positions in the game to accumulate WAR.
It is -1.5 WAR to play DH, while +1 WAR for a catcher. So you are looking at a 2.5 WAR swing if Ortiz played catcher or a 1.5 WAR swing if he played 3B. He weighed in at 4.2 WAR last season, the best DH in baseball. Even if he played 1B that is 4.7 WAR.
It would take an arm and a leg to get Ortiz, throw in both feet and hands if you are going within the division.
Marco Scutaro is no comparison for David Ortiz IMO.

Are you crazy? Trading a top 5 prospect for Ortiz? Boston would be lucky to land a top 10 prospect for him. He's old and overpaid. Do you expect him to hit 30 homers this year? Or the year after? Like someone said above, they want to cut salary, and they traded a good shortstop in marco scutaro for practically nothing, to clear salary.

If you were to make an "All MLB" team, Ortiz would be the DH. He is number 1 at the DH spot. Think about other number 1's at their positions? Like Pujols, Bautista, or Beltre. They cost a lot.
I understand he is old and I don't expect him to hit 30 HR this year, but he did last year (well 29 HR) and those are the numbers we are paying for in a trade. If we both think he won't do nearly as well next season why trade for him? The Silver Slugger and All-Star would cost a top 5 prospect.
Even with Edwin's fielding pulling down his fWAR, he still managed .866 fWAR over the last 3 years before last. Ortiz managed 1.6 fWAR over the last 3 years before last. Sure he is an upgrade but hes 1 win.
Ortiz just came off his 5th best season in his long career at an old age. He will cost a lot.
Also, please stop using "ad hominems" to attack me personally rather than my argument. I understand you disagree which is fine but please stop the insults. This is the Jay's board, not the Raptors.
It just doesn't make sense for us to buy high on an old player.

I do agree with your last statement. But IMO, I think he will come kind of cheap. He is the best at his position, but I do think that there are cheaper options, not as good as ortiz but they would be good. But right now, I don't think EE is going to be part of the future, so what would it hurt to get a guy like ortiz if it comes at the right price.

You guys are talking about a guy that would be impossible to get. Ortiz will never be traded to a division rival. EVER.
