Build-a-team interest?

Post#1 » by Miklo » Mon Feb 13, 2012 5:05 pm

Now that fantasy drafting is behind us and board activity is back up a bit, I wanted to start a very preliminary thread just to see who would be interested in a Suns board Build-a-team type game.

I'm not really committing to any details of what the game would be like because I'd want to form a committee of sorts to plan and run it to ensure smooth operation, but my idea is that there would be a draft involved, but also the game would extend longer than the previous one - there would be trading, ranking of teams, playoffs, rookie draft. Sort of a combination of Build- and GM-a-team.

So there are 2 questions: are you interested, and can you 200% commit the time to stay active?

Even more so than with a fantasy draft, there will be 30 GM's and if one GM goes inactive you might as well kill the whole game. Plus as we saw, if someone goes inactive during the draft nobody will want to take over their crappy auto- or un-drafted team. So please don't sign up here if you can't commit to being active EVERY DAY both during the draft and long-term.

Also, if we get 30 active posters interested, I'd rather randomly assign teams (by team I mean NBA team - Suns etc) once there are 30 than have people pick their team. Since this is so preliminary it will be a bit before we know if it will happen, plus IMO we're (slightly) more likely to get those last 5-10 GMs if they aren't gonna be stuck with rando teams.

Anyway, active and interested?

I'm in. I lurk enough around here that I'd be able to keep up with my team. How long do you think this will last for?
SHAZAM!

Suns traded Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and 4 1st round picks and a swap so some Vegas Bookies would like us.

I've never done one before but the way I understand it is that it is very similar to doing a fantasy franchise in NBA 2k? If that's the case, then I would be down. I lurk these forums enough that I would keep up with it.

I'd definitely do it if it was interesting. Did anyone read that fantasy idea that Bill Simmons wrote about around Christmas? It was an actual league that someone created (I think it was one of the writers of the Fast Five movies) but you actually had a salary cap and basically had the same rules as regular nba teams do, but you used ACTUAL player salaries.

So for example, in the article, Kobe was actually on the waiver wire all year because no one thought it was worth using that many dollars out of their cap space on him.

So when you draft, you have to really strategize not just on stats, but also on how much they make, and possibly a first round pick could be someone who is just good value for what they produce compared to what they make (like Gortat).

I'll find the link to the article and post it. The only problem is, and I remember thinking this was an issue when I read the original article, was that it sounded very cool, but it seems like with such a good idea, someone would have developed a website to use to track everything, but I don't know if anything like that has been developed.

I'm in. But please make sure the people involved are regulars. Only half the people ended up playing last time.

That would be my main concern, I imagine we would set some type of criteria for activity or whatnot. It's not worth all the time and effort even if we'd have just one inactive manager, so this wouldn't happen unless we could get 30 people who would be certain to stay involved. It's a challenge so who knows if it will happen, but I figured I'd see how many people filter in.

I'm out. Would love to, but just too busy.

Sad to say it, but with this being the last year of high school for me, I doubt I'll have much time to post at all. Im be more of a "lurker" this year..

Next year however, I'll probs crack the 6000 mark. :D

Despite not posting in game threads, I still lurk the board enough to see what everyone is up to. I would happily be apart of this (Last year I picked D-Rose with the 10th pick and he got MVP, woot) but I could disappear a couple days at a time because of my hectic schedule. However, if we were to do a fantasy draft, I would give a list of my top 10 guys to a mod or something if I were unable to make my selection in a timely manner.
At the same time, if we get 30 active participants I'll just sit it out.

Well we have a few people but nowhere near 30 yet. Guess we'll just keep this open and see who streams in. At some point I can PM the active managers from the last BAT, but that usually doesn't have a terribly high response rate at least when I've done it for fantasy etc. Fingers crossed!

I've been an active reader and infrequent poster here for years and would love to be a part of the game. I can commit 110% to staying active and will post a lot more if I'm involved.

My team would actually do considerably worse if judged now

How are teams compared to each other, whats the system ? I would like to know a bit more before commiting, because i havent take part of any nba fantasy games that are out there. Bullet points are enough.
