How the hell did Fish got a spot in this league

Post#1 » by ROballer » Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:06 pm

for 16 freakin' seasons...

I mean really,we all know he sucks,I've been saying for 3 years he should retire
And it's not like he's a big body ,he's a guard

I've been checking some facts and there are only a few PG's who have played over 1100 games

Dennis Johnson 1100 games 14.1 ppg 5.0 apg/19.1 ..4.6 apg
Maurice Cheeks 1101 games 11.1 ppg 6.7 apg/15.4 9.2 apg
Derek Fisher 1137 games 8.7 ppg 3.1 apg/13.3 4.3 apg
Steve Nash 1114 games 14.6 ppg 8.5 apg/18.6 11.6 apg
Derek Harper 1199 games 13.3 ppg 5.5 apg/19.7 7.1 apg
Terry Porter 1274 games 12.2 ppg 5.6 apg/17.6 9.1 apg
Jason Kidd 1284 games 13.1 ppg 9.1 apg/16.9 10.8 apg
Mark Jackson 1296 games 9.6 ppg 8.0 apg/13.6 10.6 apg
Gary Payton 1335 games 16.3 ppg 6.7 apg/ 20.8 7.7 apg
John Stockton 1504 games 13.1 ppg 10.5 apg/17.2 14.5 apg

The first column is career stats, second column best season(arguable)

Fisher didn't have great statistical seasons(even good),yes he was a great role player and leader in the lockerroom but that doesn't justify him being an NBA player for 16 years(and counting)...for his skill level,it's travesty

Were no longer running the triangle and the NBA has changed over recent years to almost strictly a guards game. Think about it..there are only a few real centers in the NBA..the rest of the NBA is guard fwd play.

Ya hes old but he served us well over the years. It all comes down to david stern and the CP3 deal. LA was making good moves to improve that weak spot which is clear because no team can be considered elite without a decent PG or combo guards.

BLAME STERN....but for now... Sign gilbert and AI...smh

He's one of the best at running the triangle, is a smart player, is clutch, and is one of the most physical guys on the team.

That being said, we're no longer running the triangle, which explains pretty much everything. His whole game last year consisted of bringing the ball down, passing to Artest, and running to the corner. Now he has no clue what to do

Let's face it, Fisher is argubly the worst starting PG in the league. He's actually non-factor in the D, he can't makes entry pass to bynum and gasol and he can't even make wide open shots. He's been very important for this team, but his time's already gone. He can be useful as a role-model for younger players and maybe third PG in the rotation ( 5-10 min a game ).

He used to have very productive playoff runs, instead of just being a guy who hit a timely shot once in a blue moon. His play in the 00-01 playoffs was extraordinary. He was also integral in 07-08 and 09-'10.

But yeah, those years are long gone, and this team isn't going anywhere with him getting 20 minutes a game. The lack of minutes for Goudelock is becoming increasingly frustrating.

All it takes is 1 or 2 distinct talents to keep someone in the league. Fisher is a leader and has Kobe as a friend. Those are his traits. In all seriousness, had he never come back to LA, he might be gone now. You could really wonder how Luke Walton has been around and in his case, his trait was his contract.

I really wish after all the CBA garbage Fish would have just retired into a coaching role. Fish is not so bad at off the ball defense like denial and fighting through picks, etc but pretty much sucks at everything else at this point.

His career numbers are severely skewed in my opinion playing beside Kobe and in the triangle. Kobe's scoring style doesn't promote many assists and the triangle left Fish (generally speaking) a pass or two away from the assists.

That being said, he should have retired.

I agree with what you said guys, but fisher retirement isn't the most important. The problem is that he still plays 26mins per game whan lakers already have 2 better pg's. Additionally, there's also Artest and that's why the offensive game sucks.

I mean, it was obvious that we needed a PG at the beginning of the season. But this 6 game road trip REALLY exposed the Lakers weakness here! Fish cant stop ANYBODY. Fish cant blow by ANYBODY. Fish cant break ANYBODY'S ankles. Fish cant breakdown ANYBODY.

Fisher was fine in Phil's "you don't need a traditional PG" triangle. We could put up with his lack of defense and passing abilities due to his timely shooting and vet leadership. Now that we no longer run the triangle, and need a PG with more a traditional skill set, we're seeing that Fisher hurts us much more than he helps us.

He desperately needs to offer to move to the Bench and give Blake a shot at the starting minutes, but I believe he's a bit too stubborn for that.

He was pretty bad the last 2 years too, even in the triangle.

It sickens me to see Fisher's name to those who played at 38 or more years considering his skill level, now and in his prime.....if he was a 1st or 2nd option in the past, got some All-star appeareances and was a very good player in his prime then maybe I'd get it,but Fisher was neither one of those things

Guys like Arenas who had a history in this league and were special in their prime(way better than Fisher right now too)can't find a team at 30 years of age and this scrub plays till he's 38?Gimme a break

IMO even at his best, they guy is backup point guard material. He's been lucky to have played for stacked Laker teams over the years so the nightly beatings he took from oppsosing PGs was not a big deal because we won on most nights. Now more then ever, he is exposed and impossible to overlook.

Even under a new regime, I don't know how he is still getting significant minutes. He is truly unbearable to watch. I can only tolerate so many missed jumpers, forced missed layups, missed entry passes, horrid decisions, missed fast break oportunities and pathetic attempts at playing defense.

Pathetic excuse for a PG who is killing us slowly. Enough already.

You do realize he hasn't played his entire career in the Triangle right ? His first 4 years was played in a motion offense run by Del Harris. Actually when Fish first came in the league, he was a strong penetrating guard but had a weak jumper. He was actually decent on defense at one time, one of the main reasons West drafted him. The man is now 36 years old, to ask how he's spot in the league is moot. Using his play at his age not to sum up his whole career is kinda asinine.

Fish earned his way into the league. He earned his way into the starting lineup. He set a record for 3pt shooting that year we swept the west in the Spurs series. There was 0.4. There was him being a third option for Kobe/Shaq. He came back and helped turn this team around by calming Kobe. He plays night in and night out, doesn't cry, pout, and always shows up to work. That is how he earned a spot in the league

------

Funny thing is every PG we gets find a way to be worse than Fish and make us want him in the game.

Payton flamed out horribly in the playoffs, so Fisher stole his minutes and the PG assignment on D. Farmar didn't pan out because Deron destroyed his swag while Fish was out there hitting daggers. Sasha had a shot at the job but forgot how to shoot after the contract. Brown never improved his handles or decision making enough to be anything but a chucker behind Kobe for 15 minutes a night. Blake last year was trash.

Hell in the span he was gone, we got Chucky Atkins, Smush Parker, Shamond Williams, Aaron McKie, and Tierre Brown who made Derek look like a god on both ends in his returns

Derek doesn't fool me, he got voo doo dolls. Probably would have caused Paul to look like a scrub if he wasn't named starting SG with Kobe being starting SF

It's his master plan to start to he got more rings than Magic
