Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi
Source: Blue Jays and reliever Casey Janssen nearing agreement on two-year deal plus option, will avoid arbitration.

As long as he doesn't get thrown in as #5 starter like early last year, I'm happy with this deal.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Litsch? Litsch started early in 2011. Janssen hasn't started a game for the Jays since 2009.

A guy at work said it was 2 plus an option, but I haven't seen that anywhere on my own yet so I don't have a link. I'm curious how much it's for if they got 2+option but I'm guessing it'll be significantly more than the 1.8-2.2 arby range.

Deal sounds reasonable

$2.9m this season, $3.9m in 2013, club option for $4m in 2014 with no buyout.

it's $2.0 2012, $3.9 2013.

i think janssen will be traded away next offseason for something, same way Rzep was used in trade.

Very. I was guessing for 3 years of control it'd start 500k higher. Still, with the volatility of both reliever performance and the reliever FA market I can see why Janssen's happy too.

edit: if Hyper's right about 2.0, then it's even better. I don't know why he'd delay FA without getting a little something extra for this year though.

$2 mill was the mid point of the two numbers in arb. i guess they settled in the middle. I think it is a decent contract. Janssen is not a closer, so he wont get more than $5 mill in the market.

2 years, $5.9 million with a club option for year 4 at $4 million- 2012 - 2 million, 2013 3.9 million.

It's a pretty fair deal for all sides. I think it's a safe bet that he'll get all 3 years out if he pitches anything like the last 2 years.

Happy about the deal. It was worth millions to keep away from nasty arbitration's. Usually you just either tick off the player and save a couple bucks or lose a couple bucks and the player still is upset.

Why build a case to tell a player how terrible he is when you want him to pitch for you the ensuing year?

I think it was a great deal, if anything they payed market value and we have a nice option to keep him around if he is outperforming his contract. It's a beautiful thing.

Also a side note, our bullpen is DIRTY, I'm actually looking forward to the later innings in the game.

Just as long as the late innings start in the 7th, not in the 5th or 6th every damn game Romero doesn't start.

Good point. I have a feeling our rotation is improved from last year too (swap out Jo-Jo)

Watching Jo-Jo Reyes getting beat up every inning was mind boggling. Cecil better not do the same this year.

Personally I think Cecil would have to try to pitch badly to be that bad.

Cecil at least has mistakes that you can look at and improve upon. If there is such a thing as "stuff" Jo-Jo doesn't have it.
