Who says Phaneuf is overrated? That was classic

Good on the leafers for honoring Mats. Personally, I always liked him. I thought he was a terrific standup captain. He never tried to pass the buck and was a great leader for you guys.

The whole mantra about him not leading the team to the cup is off-base imo. No single player, no matter how great, leads there team the stanley cup. Even Sidney Crosby, need 2-3 other great players for his team to be a perrenial contender. I thought Mats get's a lot of undue flack for not leading his team to a championship which is missing the point. He was a great player and captain and representative of this orginization and it's great to see him get his due.

Really? This game was so disgraceful. Your gonna lose on the night you honor Sundin? What a damn shame!! BB, I want you to make a big trade soon!

Simply put, this team isnt a playoff team. They might get lucky to squeek in but thats it.

You know how in Baseball, there are players considered to be AAAA players (players who are too good for AAA but not quite good enough for the majors)? Burke has accumulated a roster of AAAA hockey players.

You might have a point. The leafs are definitely producing, thats not even a question. Our top 3 players have combined for like 155 points and theres still over a month and half left to play. The leafs can score, and this was just a bad showing. But the problem I see this year is the leafs have only 2 lines that really produce. The Kessel Line and the and the Grabovski Line. Connolly hasnt done much and has really slowed down, he's not able to make those amazing passes anymore, i just dont see them. The defensemen are better and more mobile than previous years but they don't produce offensively on the powerplay. I remember the leafs' powerplay was deadly because of 2 guys in the early 2000s; Kaberle and McCabe. It would be the typical Kaberle to McCabe setup and goal. Phaneuf has a hard shot but he just doesnt find the back of the net as much as he should! Phaneuf could easily be a 20 goal scoring defensemen.

But back to your statement about AAAA players... i dont see how any team can be without them. This is a league unlike basketball where there are more active players playing in a game. So yea saying your 4th line is full of AAAA players doesn't mean the team is totally crap.

BB won't be getting that great player. IMO I don't think he will do anything this season. He says he likes to do things early, but its getting late now, but that doesn't nothing is going to happen. BB should try to get rid of guys like Connolly, Komisarek, Lombardi to make cap room so he can make a run at parise, or even weber and suter. I don't care what you get in return for Komi, Connolly, or lombardi. IF we sign weber or Suter, we can then make a deal for Getzlaf by giving up a Schenn AND a Gunnerson without a problem and then we spare some prospects, and Weber or suter is a upgrade over Schenn or gunnerson. A guy I like is Jakub Voracek. He probably won't sign with Philly because of how much depth they have. Also BB should go after guys like Brandon Dubinsky, Cal Clutterbuck, Bobby Ryan. Also, I don't think BB should even go after Getzlaf this year. Next year, when he is in his contract year it will probably be easier to pry him away. Same goes for Perry. So if BB can Pry away B.Ryan from Anaheim, then go after Perry and Getzlaf if they go to FA, that would be great.

No doubt most teams have "AAAA" players, but not as many (in my opinion) as the leafs do. Don't get me wrong, I think Phaneuf, Liles, and Kessel (though I'm not really a fan of the trade) are quality NHL talents. I'd group Lupul with them if he continues his success next year- but right now, I think its fair to call Lupul's season above his mean. Outside of that- I don't see many guys on this team that will even flourish to become above-average talents in this league. Gardiner looks like a great prospect, and Kadri might have some success, but thats really it in terms of young talent.

I just dont see a very bright future for the Leafs, unless they re-group and try to re-build. They need a superstar, and I don't see one coming to Toronto anytime soon (Definitely not this off-season. The Leafs will only have $13 million to spend on 7 players, and about 5-6 of that million may go to Grabovski). And just as much as they need a superstar, you can add 'true leader' and '#1 goalie' to the list as well.

Bottomline is, this team needs to re-build and improve through the draft. No team in recent history has hoisted the cup without suffering enough losses to acquire high-level talent through the draft, and for whatever reason Burke thinks he's the only one that can buck the historic trend.

Detroit may be the only team to not suffer losses in order to win- but if Detroit's success tells us anything, it's how vital it is to have a strong scouting department that can make use of late-round draft picks. Thats been the key to their success.

I think people either are suffering from 'what have you done for my lately' syndrome or they let the fact that a solid start to the seaon raised their expectations. The Leafs are exactly (if not doing better) where most people expected them to be. I can't recall one person even predicting the Leafs were a definite playoff team from the get go. They're a bubble team and that's because they're still a young team progressing. They're the 3rd youngest team in the league and you have to remember prior to BB our best prospects were possibly Pogge, Caputi (excluding Schenn and Kulemin)? This team finally has a quality farm team and as a result this team is only moving up. They already have pieces and just to need keep adding to it.

This team is hardly comprised of AAAA players and the worst thing to do would be blow up what we already have. Or are you talking about getting rid of the stop gaps? That's going to happen with time but right now we don't have anyone to replace them. It's not a good idea to put someone in there a bit green and mess up their development. Our best players are either entering their prime or haven't even reached it yet.

Honestly, you don't need to high draft picks in the NHL to be a winner, you need to use all resources: trading, FA and drafting. The Bruins didn't win the cup due to their drafting. Their best players were FA signing and trades (Chara and Thomas). Every team that has won the cup has a good mix and it's not purely based on drafting. You have to draft well no matter if you're a high pick or not. Predicting player careers of a kid is hardly a science and every single year there are more than enough quality NHL players found all over the draft. For every Malkin there's a Giroux.

They're playing like a typical young team but with time their consistency should improve.

This team has a solid core and needs to add to it, not blow it up. Playoffs and playoff runs are going to here sooner than later.

I really don't understand why people continue to complain about Burke not rebuilding, and choosing to acquire veterans instead. Who exactly has he traded for a veteran? If you consider Mike Brown or Kris Versteeg veterans, then sure.

Burke has assembled the youngest team in the league, and had 2 first round picks in last seasons draft. Despite what people think, other than for Kessel, he hasn't traded many top draft choices in recent memory.

Let's have a little bit of confidence in him. He got a good return on Versteeg last season, got a kings ransom on Kaberle, manhandled the Ducks for Beauchemin and won the Phanuef deal. Until he makes any moves this season, let's hold off on the criticism for the time being.

As mentioned earlier, nobody expected the Leafs to make any noise with a playoff spot. They were expected, at most, to slip into an 8th seed (which is right around where they are now).

Nobody posted here when the Leafs won 5 straight, but they lose 2 in a row and the 'we need to rebuild and we have a bunch of minor leaguers in the lineup' posts pour out.

I dont understand why people are up in arms about trading or benching kulemin. Do most people not see what I see. He is a solid in basically all aspects of the game. The one thing I think he does better than anyone on the leafs is drive the net. He takes a defender with him which creates all those opportunities for McArthur and Grabs. He has a good shot too, and those goals will start going back in for him sooner or later.

On a side note...Damn Sundins wife is hot

Joe Colborne isn't gonna be that num 1 center. He probably isn't going to be a number 2 center. He is supposed to be a good third liner. He was hot in the beginning of the year, but now he is at his normal.

How is he 'supposed' to be a 3rd line center? I don't think his skillset projects him to be a 3rd line player at all. Have you seen him play?

I think he's a tad expendable. I've always been a huge Kulemin supporter, and consider him one of the best players on the team....but if the value is there for an upgrade, I think they should consider it. That said, with his struggles, I don't think the Leafs would get anywhere near his value should they trade him. He's certainly an all around talent, and I'd prefer to trade guys like Macarthur over him, but I think he'd be a key selling point in getting that upgrade at center.

The AHL and the NHL are really different. Just look at Kadri.

What crown is trying to say is that he is a skilled big centre. He isn't a grinder or a checker. He has incredible vision, and is a great passer. His skills would be wasted on the third line, where he would be playing with guys that don't have the best finishing ability. Therefore if he pans out, he is projected to play on one of the scoring lines in the NHL.

I exaggerated a lot. But I think people think he's gonna be that center. Im just saying he won't. It would be almost a miracle if he was a good number 1 center. He is probably gonna be a number 2 center.

i agree.
Colborne's getting his tires pumped a lot.
he's big. people are hoping he'll be a clone of Joe Thornton.
but he won't be unless something miraculous happens.

Yeah, they got the much needed win tonight.

So far, 4-4 this month. Hopefully they can close out the West coast trip with a win against a tough Vancouver team.

Thats what she said lol! But seriously that was definitely a HUGE.. win! Finishing the month in a playoff spot is key. March will be an even tougher month than february. Leafs need to finish off february above .500 so when they go into march, losing a string of games hopefully wont hurt too much.

Still alot of hockey left in this month but looking forward:

March = 2 sets of back to backs ... 1) Bruins & Penguins (ouch, have to get one win here) 2) Devils & Rangers (against have to get atleast a win!)

March = 9/15 games are against teams AHEAD of us!

March = 5 game road trip... and first 8/11 in the month are on the road!

Closing this month off strong is vital.
