He hasn't had to go up against what anyone would call a top C
in his recent period of good play.

Mcgee is soft in body and between the ears but he is still a young, productive center. he is currently 12th among centers in PER and 14th in rebounding.

His lack of defensive awareness is pretty annoying though.

I have him as 10th in PER, 9th if you exclude Bosh from the centers category.

I can't open that link at work for some reason. I just did a quick look at Hollingers numbers. Whatever the bottom line is that as much of a f-up as he can be at times he is still productive at a tough position to fill.

In my own PER-like rating system, I have McGee 13th among centers. He's been hurt by poor efficiency. Bump him to 70% free throw shooting and he'd move up 3 spots in my rankings.

Setting league average at 100, here's how the Wizards stand in my rating system (above 100 means above average; below 100 means...umm...below average):

McGee -- 134
Turiaf -- 123
Booker -- 123
Mack -- 103
Wall -- 102
Young -- 91
Seraphin -- 74
Blatche -- 62
Lewis -- 60
Singleton -- 58
Crawford -- 43
Vesely -- 15
Mason -- 11
Evans -- -65
N'Diaye -- -173

I also have a Value Over Replacement Player measure where I set the replacement value at 10th man. Right now, replacement is about a 60 on the scale above (where 100 is average). So, Blatche this season is barely above replacement value, Lewis, Singleton, Crawford, Vesely, Mason and Evans are below that level.

Not sure if it's been posted elsewhere but McGee did not get invited to the slam dunk contest this year.

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine
Just going up at ESPN online: Dunk contest field is Budinger, Paul George, Shumpert and Derrick Williams. And, yes, Jeremy Lin involved, too

Is the NBA trying to kill the dunk contest again?

I find it hard to believe that bigger names were not either available or chosen.

I can understand the Lebrons and Dwights of the world declining but c'mon. Even if it's a DeAndre Jordan or JaVale, get some guys who can attract an audience.

Looking at the list, it looks like it may be an attempt to get less know younger players exposure. I agree with Miller that they could have gotten some names that were a little more established.

I'm looking at those names again and saying, "Seriously?"

Budinger -- Not a bad dunker. Athletic player. But the real reason he's in the contest is that he's white.

George -- Doesn't look like a WOW athlete. Not a spectacular in-game dunker. Don't understand the invite.

Shumpert -- Makes some sense because he's athletic. But I think this is really about getting a Knicks player in the contest. And about getting Jeremy Lin to participate.

Derrick Williams -- Solid invite.

McGee would easily win a dunking contest against these guys, though. None of 'em could do the two balls in two different baskets dunk. None of 'em could do the three balls in one basket dunk.

Bright side, I guess is that McGee won't need to spend any time working on his dunks. He can spend that time working on his game. :)

Mcgee's offensive game is definitely showing signs that he has been working on it. His hook has been consistent and he had a couple of nice drop step moves last night.

He still horrible from the foul line and can't shoot jumpers with any consistency but at least he can score in the post.

Are you referring to Ryan Anderson's .167 FG% on hooks? No way he should be a FA target this offseason...

Actually, the surprising thing to me was that only LaMarcus Aldridge shoots hooks at a higher % than JaVale. Add in the 100% FG on his dunks, and those should be the only two shots he ever takes.

There oughta be a caveat on those "shot type" stats. They're dependent on the scorekeeper correctly recording what kind of shot it was. I used to track defense by writing notes on a printout of the official play-by-play, and I can assure you that there are not consistent standards league-wide. Just eye-balling McGee's stats, the makes on hooks feel about right, but the attempts seems low.

This is a GOOD thing- now all the hours he would've spent practicing useless impractical midair masturbations can be used for fundamentals like low post footwork, boxing out, free throws, etc.

Not to say that he doesn't deserve to be in - and win - the contest, everyone including Blake Griffin knows he deserved it last year. Hopefully he gets to win it in the future- AFTER he has established himself as an All Star caliber player like Grifin has.

Edited to add: I guess that's what Nivek said above, a lot more concisely than I did.

I'm impressed with McGee's expanded post game. Last night he showcased a drop step on the left block, a lefty and righty hook, and the last few games he's hit an elbow jumper. He's still a bit awkward with his moves, but you can't help but be encouraged by his progress. These flashes make me feel comfortable that if they land Davis the two could co-exist even though neither is a dominate offensive post big man.

his offense /seems/ considerably better than last year

one caveat to that though is I winced when he made the
elbow jumper. That kind of result only would seem to
encourage him. Not good.
