Trade Deadline

Post#1 » by mccaffertyd » Fri Feb 17, 2012 12:19 am

How many of you think that we need to make a move at the trade deadline? Maybe ship Salmons to a contender? Its that time of the year and teams are going to want a experienced guy like Salmons who can contribute to a championship run. I think that unless theres a one sided deal that would benefit us my untouchable list goes as follows:

DMC; He is obviously our big man of the future, this guy shows up damn near every night and contributes unlike Evans who seems to take nights off sometimes.

Tyreke: As inconsistent as Reke has been, I still believe that this kid has unlimited potential if he can start making his shots.

Jimmer: I know i might get flamed for saying he's untouchable but I truly believe that Jimmer has all the tools to be our point guard of the future. Much better court vision then he gets credit for, He just hasn't gotten the opportunitys to show it off as much lately with his recent dump in minutes since Thornton returned.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Kings didn't make a move, but I would be disappointed. Time to clear some clutter in that frontcourt. Need to move Hickson for something and definitely test the waters and see what kind of value JT has. Donte needs to be shopped as well but I doubt he has a ton of value right now. Can't let these guys just walk in the summer and none will bring much in a sign and trade if they wait.

Myself, I wouldn't wait until the summer and I'd see what kind of interest the Blazers have in JT and if Batum could be nabbed at that price. If the Kings want to fill that SF hole now, JT is about the only thing that can get it done, hopefully he can. Would be nice if Hickson could be that carrot but I doubt it.

Unfortunately NOBODY is going to want Salmons. He's played that badly and his contract is certainly Kenny Thomas level, need to just wait and get some of his salary off the books with the amnesty after the season.

Yeah thats what I was thinking if we can't move him we need to amnesty him, and definetley agreed abot Hickson. What a waste of a trade, this guy has nowhere near lived up to the expectations when we traded for him.

At the very least it lit a fire under JT's arse.

I agree that the Kings should see what they could get for JT and/or JJ, especially if Kings aren't planning on re-signing one of them. If they don't, it'll be like Dalmebert last year where teams were calling in but we said he's not for trade.

I'd swap JJ for whatever I could get for him before he has no value left. And while they won't, I'd do the same for Jimmer. I don't see the confidence or the well-rounded skills necessary to live up to his created persona/star power. I'd trade him for a pretty penny while he's still worth it.

In all fairness though, he hasn't really been given much of an opportunity to. He clearly has talent and if given 36 mpg and shots he'll produce, but here, they just aren't there. JT/Hayes is more of what this team needs over a guy that can put the ball in the hoop if you slam it down to him 18 times a game.

Any possibility of getting Brook Lopez? Would JJ and Jimmer be enough or would they want our first as well? I think he and Cuz would be great together.

That's more like a ROBIN Lopez offer.

I think a trade for Felton would be great for this team. He is frustrated under Nate McMillan. Maybe he could be had for cheap.

Yeah I didn't think it would be enough and I know we can't trade our first. I think we're stuck with what we got maybe some minor tweaking.

Honestly, there's nothing on this team that Petrie is going to trade.

However, if it was me, I'd start exploring offers with Portland to nab one of their SFs up for contract extension. I'd even offer Jimmer for Wallace.

Well I can see the Kings trading either Salmons or Garcia to either the Jazz or Raptors for either D.Harris orr J.Calderon . If not 1 of those deals I see us having a chance to make a blockbuster deal trading for D.Williams from the Nets if the Nets cant get D.Howard via trade as they may feel that without D12 then Howard wont want to be a Net .

The players on our team I think have the best chance of being dealt are : Garcia , Thompson , Hickson , Green . Salmons I think in order for him to be dealt he would have to be in a deal like I either mentioned above or to a team trading a player with a much larger salary making that deal likely a blockbuster trade . If neither of those 2 scenerios are met he will remain a King IMO .

Lastly possibly trade scerio could be us trading a package of either Hickson or Thomspon with D.Green for Batum . Another possibilty could have Portland adding A.Miller in a much bigger deal if Miller still remains unhappy in Portland. I guess their is a small chance we could deal Salmons for S.Jackson ( headcase ) as Jacksons contract expires before Salmons does if so we could choose to try & buy out Jacksons contract ?

If we could trade Salmons to a contending team and not get a toxic contract back, I would be all for it. Or at least a less toxic contract.

As far as JJ Hickson goes, up until recently I have been all for trading him, but with his value so low now, I don't see the point. We might as well keep him around and see if he can raise his value so we can trade him next year. I don't see how what we might get for him would be any better than just resigning him. No one is going to make him a great offer.

The reason why you trade any of Hickson , J.T or Green if you do so is because all 3 have qualifying offers after this season . If your Petrie or the Maloofs you need to ask yourselves what type of contract does this guy likely want ? Then you say is he worth that ? If you feel that the ammount of money he will want is overpaying him then you need to possibly trade him . None of these guys are safe IMO . Especially Hickson of the 3 even though we owe a future 1st for him . Wich by the way I thought was a stupid trade back then & still now mainly because most of Hicksons stats in Clev were because of having a guy like Lebron on his team that when your a team doubling up on lebron then guys like Hickson will get easier baskets as he did . The Clevland organization was smart they saw this & got great value from us knowing that situation & also that to keep him they would likely have to give him what would be considered to be a bad contract to keep him befor his qualifying offer .

I say we package Hickson in a deal or If he wants to much money on a new deal we just let him go . I would rather possibly lose a future 1st and end up with nothing and losing a pick rather than keep him by signing him to a bad contract that could / would hurt us for the next 4-5 years and lose a #1 pick in the proccess .

I am confident 1 or both Hickson or J.T will be gone
and 2 of the 3 between Salmons , Garcia & Green will be gone .
If we do pull a major b;ockbuster then guys like Evans , Thorton & Jimmer are not safe either . Though of those 3 I think Jimmer is the safest due to his marketability if for no other reason.

To be honest I dont think we should move JT at all, unless we know 100% we will not resign him. He is a perfect compliment for DMC and with them to as our 4/5 we are pretty big. Hickson/Jimmer/Salmons deal. We can easily move them 3 for a piece or two. Jimmer will never be a starter in this league.

I think it might be worth looking into Chris Anderson if JT is dealt. I like JT but I think if you can use him to fill the major hole at SF, you do it. JT is a great compliment to Cousins, but Hayes is better and in time will be better if Smart pulls his head out of his rear. You know, Hayes is going to be important for this team down the line, the big man competition has changed recently with a lot of breakout bigs that the Kings have an answer for in Hayes and Cousins. Depends on what JT is going to command but I think that money could be more wisely spent filling that SF position.

And I wouldn't get too down on Jimmer, if the coach realizes his worth as well, he'll be a great hand moving forward.

There is no objective reason to say hayes will be important to this team in the future. Im guessing we have Hayes' father, brother, or son, or all of the above on this board. Hayes has done nothing positive for this team all year. He gets scored on more than our other bigs, outrebounded, is a liability on offense, hasnt shown his alleged passing ability, and hasnt contributed to a single win all year. Any excuses made are fluff. Hes too short and out of shape. Hes been a bust, period. The coach realized all of this a long time ago. The blind groupie love for this guy is really a shame especially when it comes at the expense to giving credit to guys on the team that actually produce.

Thompson is our only other big besides cousins who we should consider as part of our future going forward. But i agree that if hes going to be expensive to keep, we should consider moving him. If he can be part of a deal that upgrades us at 3 i think we have to do it. Batum would be perfect for us.

I wouldnt trade jimmer though unless hes part of a deal for a young allstar calliber player. Its too early in his career to know his ceiling and trajectory. Like all new guys in the league, keep him while hes cheap to see where hes going. Low risk high reward. Plus management wouldnt trade him anyway with the amount of money he brings to the organization.

^ The problem with Hayes is that his weaknesses are magnified by this team. Namely, our offense is full of one on one players who can't hit outside shots. Hayes needs to play with a strong offense since he's so useless on that end of the court.

Further, Hayes' defense is great against the slower, plodding big men on top echelon teams (the Gasol's and Duncan's of the world), but on teams that have a more dynamic player at the 4/5 he's really bad.

When we signed him I think I said that Hayes is a spot starter. When you're playing a team with a good post big man, you start Hayes. When you're playing a team with some combination of quickness and "no offense" at the 4/5 then you bring Hayes off the bench.

As for the trade deadline: this team shouldn't do anything unless a great deal falls into their laps. If you can grab a solid, young 3 for the likes of Hickson &/or Greene then you do it. Otherwise you stand pat. The next 6 months would ideally (but realistically look like this):
1) No moves made at the deadline
2) Amnesty Salmons. He's a clear net negative on this team.
3) At the draft pick up the best big or 3 that falls to you. The best case scenario here would obviously be Anthony Davis with the 1st pick, but I'd also love to get Gilchrist for the 3 spot.
4) Look to fill the remaining holes via trades and free agency. This is obviously going to be some combination of bigs, a starting wing, and a backcourt player (depending on what happens in the draft). In my mind we should make a run at the following players:
- Felton: good defender and has turned into a decent outside shooter. Plus would give us another PG on the team that we're desperately needing. Getting him would allow us to either move Evans to the 3 full time (basically means we run a 3-guard set) or move Thornton to a bench scoring role (my preference--I think Thornton's horrible as a starter).
- Batum: Basically exactly what we want out of our 3. He shoots well, defends well, and doesn't need the ball to be effective. He'll command a significant amount though since he's an RFA.
- Frye: This would be by trade but see what Phoenix would take for him. His numbers are down and he'll still have 3 more years left on his deal after this one. The Suns may look to shed him cheaply during a rebuild. He'd add a very good shooter to our core of bigs. I wouldn't mind a bench big rotation of him & Hayes.
- Anthony Morrow: Another trade option. This really depends on how NJ fares in free agency. If they miss out on Dwight & lose Deron they may try to give up their current players for some kind of future compensation (i.e. picks). I'd sure as hell give up our 2nd rounder this year for Morrow. Would give us a shooter off the bench we could play at the 1-3.

The trade deadline for the kings is a tad convoluted because of the challenges that exist with the fan base and the potential move.
Im thinking Thornton, Evans, and Cousins are not going anywhere because of their youth, contract (at least evans and cousins), and marketability (theyve been with the kings for a while, theyre already marketed to the common fan). These guys represent the "foundation" of the kings for now, and may only be traded if a superstar is brought back (not likely).
Fredette, Thomas, Whiteside, and Honeycutt really only have value to the kings, as they (the kings) have been investing the time and money on their development, which would be stunted if moved. This would be a sell low direction for the team to trade them. Only if they are needed as a sweetner, to make a trade work financially, or because the kings have given up on them (whiteside) would they be moved.
Salmons, hayes, outlaw, and garcia represent the overpayed and could be traded if only for other teams' garbage. Ideally for the kings, maybe not the maloofs (given their financial struggles), they could pick up more salary in the short term for reducing the long term financial commitments (hayes/outlaw). Garcia may be a keeper, only because he has an expiring contract next year, and would be more valuable as that time then as a player (sadly).
That leaves Greene, Thompson, and Hickson, who i believes could and should be traded. I agree with a previous poster that greene has limited value and may be kept on this premise alone. Thompson and hickson though may be moved, im thinking for an expiring contract and a future first, if only because the kings would not want to invest the money it would take to keep them around (nor should they, they need to focus on a big splash at pg or sf) and decent bigs are needed by playoff bound teams around trade deadline time. It also would free time for whiteside and possibly outlaw (if the kings are interested in rebuilding his value?).
