Our New Needs

Post#1 » by weasel » Sat Feb 18, 2012 11:32 pm

With the emergence of Pek, we need to re-address what we need out of our wing players. I think we now need to go find a couple of guys who are first and foremost defensive players who can be smart with the ball on offence but don't need the ball to be effective. Someone like Trenton Hassel comes to mind.

The reason I say this is with Love and Pek looking like they will be putting up 20+ points each per game, we just need to find the 12-15 ppg guys. I think with the way Beas is developing his game since he came back, he could be our perfect 6th man and someone to pick up the scoring on the nights Love or Pek don't have it. Wes has been improving as the season has gone on defensively, and he's looked confident on offence these past two games. Maybe he could be one of the defensive minded guys I mentioned above? If he can fill that role, for the other wing it would be perfect to find a veteran to help guide this young team.

But from my end, that's as far as I can take it, I'm not sure what players fit the mold I described above. Anybody know who can be our new Trenton Hassle?

I know Kahn is hoping that Martell Webster can be that guy, he is getting back into shape and Adelman is giving him a shot. A defensive wing who can hit the open three consistently is what we need, he played that part well before the back surgeries...

Someone who could make 3s and defend ideally. Bruce Bowen types would be ideal. Not that there are tons of Bruce Bowen types to be had...

Batum fits that bill.

Putting one of these three next to a healthy Webster would be nice.

Yeah, those would work. I'd like Batum too but I think he's gonna be out of our price range.

You still need at least one above average offensive player on the wing. I actually am a big fan of the proposed trades I've seen lately with the Wolves getting both Batum and Matthews from Portland.

And a "healthy" Webster is pretty much wishful thinking, sad to say.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

A shooter who can knock down wide open shots consistantly would be a nice start.

I really think that Daequan cook for Ridnour is a definite possibility considering that the thunder need a a back up pg and thabo is coming back soon

We need a SG who can create his own shot. If he can make shots and play defense that would be a huge plus. Between Martell and Wes I think the SF spot would be good enough for this team for the time being.

The Portland guards can't create their own shot, if that's your criteria most of the players we've been talking about are off the list.

Malcolm Lee.

Creates his own shots? Check.
Play defense? Check.

Now how consistently and at what level remains to be seen, but I think our coaching staff is very high on this kid.

I think we need a SG who can play D and hit a 3. That seems to be our 2 biggest weaknesses there.

Which ones? Wes Matthews isn't a great shot-creator but he'd be a huge upgrade, and he plays solid defense / makes shots.

Batum is more of a SF, but he's pretty good at creating his own shot because he has a nice handle, his problem is lack of opportunity and aggression(at times).

Batum does not have a great handle and is not a good shot creator but he is a very good defensive player and shooter who because of his length can get his shot off against most wings. He's clearly been Portlands second best player over the past month. I dont think they move him and I think they'll match any offer this offseason. He'd be a great fit here though.

If we make a move before the deadline I see Martin as a possibility and if we wait until free.agency I could see us going after Mayo.

Depends on what Kahn decides to do.

If we stay the course Tolliver will expire, Randolph & Beasley will be R-FAs, Webster will need to be bought out & Miller said he's retiring. If this happens, we will have very little cap space to work with.

If however, Kahn decides to be aggressive we can rescind our rights on Randolph & Beasley, let Tolliver expire, buy-out Webster, Miller will retire, then we can trade some guys like Milicic, Ridnour, Barea, Johnson for expirings and have a considerable amount of cap space to work with.

So it all depends.

Quoting myself from another thread :)

Assuming we do not pay AR, Beas, Webster, Miller or resign Tolliver, the team is committed to $49,838,457 in cash next season, $8.2 million in cap space. If Kahn trades Miller and Websters expiring contracts getting out of the money they are guaranteed next season we'd have $9.654 million. If he wants to he can amnesty Darko, which I doubt, but he can, then we'd have $14.882 million. He can easily move Luke's $4million contract anytime. So we do have the cash around to make a run at Batum for instance.
